Summary of Races

RACE 1: Schweppes Handicap 1600m

  • So Willie – began awkwardly. When questioned regarding the performance, rider H Bowman stated that his mount was unsuited by the slow early tempo and, after he endeavoured to improve to the outside of Oh So Splendido near the 500m, the tempo quickened, which resulted in his mount being left somewhat flat-footed. He added, after balancing up in the straight, he wasn't disappointed with the finishing effort of the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-foreleg and had lacerations to the mid off-fore cannon and near-hind coronet. Trainer Mr C Waller stated So Willie had pleased since its last start at Rosehill on 13 August 2016 and had no lameness issues in the stable. Mr Waller was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again. He undertook to report back to the Stewards on the future race plans for So Willie.
  • Takewing – slow to begin. K O'Hara, rider of the 5th placegetter, was reminded of her obligations to ride her mounts out to the finish of the race.
  • Signposted – overraced after obtaining the lead near the 1400m. Raced greenly in the straight and was inclined to lay in.

RACE 2: TAB Supports Jockeys Trust Handicap 2000m

  • Dubaiinstyle – prior to the declaration of correct weight the Stewards viewed the official patrol films to ascertain if there were grounds for objection against the winner, Dowdstown Charlie, in relation to, firstly, the whip of H Bowman being accidentally knocked from his grasp by the whip of B Avdulla, rider of Dowdstown Charlie, and, secondly, as to whether Dowdstown Charlie had impeded the running of Dubaiinstyle for some distance near the 100m. When Stewards were satisfied there were not sufficient grounds, having regard to the margin between the two horses at the finish, correct weight was declared. Slow to begin.
  • Dowdstown Charlie – slow to begin.
  • Zero To Ten – shortly after straightening was inconvenienced when Dowdstown Charlie shifted out away from Dubaiinstyle. When questioned regarding her riding of the gelding, App. D Panya stated that her instructions had been to lead, however if another runner had shown intent to take that position, she was to allow her mount to settle behind the lead. Trainer Mr J Scobie confirmed the instructions. App. Panya added that, after obtaining the lead in the early stages, her mount was inclined to overrace and, with the gelding stepping up to 2000m for the first time, she elected to take hold of her mount and allow Dubaiinstyle to cross to the lead near the 1500m. She said after being crossed Zero To Ten continued to overrace and consequently she then contemplated coming to the outside of Dubaiinstyle, however when Dowdstown Charlie improved to her outside she was obliged to remain racing on the back of Dubaiinstyle after her mount and Dowdstown Charlie made contact near the 1300m. App. Panya further stated that as her mount continued to overrace she elected to take hold of her mount so as not to be too close to the heels of Dubaiinstyle, however, her mount then got its head up and lost additional ground, which then allowed Dowdstown Charlie to take up a position on the rail in advance of her. Stewards advised App. Panya that she had erred in the early stages in that, after being crossed by Dubaiinstyle, she did not react soon enough to take up a position outside the leader, Dubaiinstyle and, secondly, she had shown poor judgement in allowing her mount to lose its position on the back of Dubaiinstyle, which resulted in the eventual winner, Dowdstown Charlie, obtaining cover and then requiring Zero To Ten having to be taken three wide from the 700m to improve into the race.
  • Thunder Down Under – laid in under pressure in the straight.
  • Dure – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near-foreleg. Trainer M Smith was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Dure racing again.

RACE 3: Daily Telegraph Ming Dynasty Quality (Group 3) 1400m

  • High Mist – after being loaded into the barrier, got its near-hind leg up on the partition for a short period. The colt was inspected by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. When questioned, rider H Bowman stated that prior to speaking to trainer Mr C Waller he had anticipated taking up a more forward position on the colt, however he had been instructed by Mr Waller to endeavour to take up a position fourth or fifth in the run. He added High Mist commenced reasonably well, but he would have had to make some use of his mount to take up a forward position and as a consequence he elected to allow the colt to race where comfortable towards the rear of the field. When questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the straight, he stated that after following Swear making the home turn, he improved to that runner's inside and onto the back of Skylight Glow. H Bowman further stated that given the slow early tempo he had expected Skylight Glow to improve shortly after straightening and for this reason he elected to remain racing on the back of that runner for a short distance. He said some distance after straightening he elected to go to the inside of Skylight Glow in an endeavour to obtain clear running between that runner and Shazee Lee, however when Skylight Glow shifted back in slightly he became awkward on the heels of that runner whereby he had to check, which resulted in his mount shifting in and making significant contact with Shazee Lee and becoming badly unbalanced. When questioned as to whether there was an opportunity to improve to the outside of Skylight Glow, H Bowman stated his decision to shift to the inside was influenced by trainer Mr C Waller advising him that in his view the going towards the rail was superior and, further given that Skylight Glow had initially shifted out on straightening, he felt that was the best option in the circumstances, although conceding there may have been an opportunity to come the outside of Skylight Glow. Trainer Mr C Waller confirmed the instructions issued and indicated in his view he did feel the inside going was superior.
  • Shazee Lee – overraced in the early stages.
  • Bit Dusty – rider T Clark stated that, with the gelding stepping up in grade today, in his view it raced somewhat green and would derive benefit from today's performance. He added in his opinion it may be better to drop the gelding back to weaker company, whereby it can gain some race experience. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 4: TAB Highway Handicap 1400m

  • Squidensquizz – the start of the race was delayed when the gelding shifted its near-hind plate, which necessitated it being refitted in the tie-up stalls. Slow to begin. Rider T Clark stated his mount was inclined to overrace throughout the early and middle stages and in his view, stepping back in distance today from 1600m last start, raced dour. He added Squidensquizz would also benefit from being taken to the outside to make its run in clear going. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Galaxy Warrior – slow to begin. Linking up with the course proper Coming In Hot shifted out and carried Galaxy Warrior wider.
  • High Tec – slow to begin.
  • Grand Rouge – slow to begin.
  • No When To Hold Em – linking up with the course proper commenced to overrace and improved onto the heels of Grand Rouge and was steadied.
  • Trying – rider K O'Hara stated that she was caught wide in the middle stages and as a consequence leaving the 700m she elected to restrain to take up a position on the back of Eurella Flight. She added as soon as she obtained cover her mount became awkward in its action and from that point did not respond to her riding and consequently finished well back. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr N Gardner stated in his view when Trying was restrained back towards the rear of the field the gelding failed to stretch out when the tempo of the race increased. He added in his opinion, although the gelding had some wet track form, it may not have appreciated the heavy going. Mr Gardner undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Trying subsequent to the race.

RACE 5: The Mostyn Copper Group Handicap 1400m

  • Tsaritsa – began awkwardly with its head up and then shortly after was crowded by Gold Symphony, which shifted in. Rounding the home turn commenced to overrace, got its head up and ran out after improving onto the heels of Forget. Tsaritsa was then obliged to race wide without cover for the remainder of the race. Close to the finish had to be steadied away from the heels of Torgersen (R Hutchings), which shifted in. R Hutchings was advised he must stop riding and straighten his mounts sooner than he did on this occasion.
  • Torgersen – slow to begin. Briefly held up on the home turn.
  • Forget – slow to begin. Overraced in the middle stages. Laid in under pressure in the straight.
  • Gold Symphony – raced keenly in the early stages.
  • Zin Zan Eddie – rider App. J Innes Jr accidentally dropped his whip near the 200m. App. J Innes Jr stated, after allowing Testashadow to cross his mount near the 900m, the gelding commenced to overrace when the tempo slackened. He added he could offer no further excuse for the disappointing performance, particularly as the gelding was a beaten horse soon after straightening. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to the near-hind bumper and the gelding was displaying a poor post-race recovery.
  • Testashadow – rider App. D Panya stated that she had to make some use of her mount in the early stages to take up a position outside the leader, Burning Passion. She added when placed under pressure in the straight Testashadow was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off and in her view it did handle the heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr G Portelli advised that Testashadow had worked well leading into today's race, however concurred that it did not handle the heavy track, particularly as it was up in weight and also had not started for a period of 21 days. He indicated it would be his intention to avoid similar tracks in future. Mr Portelli undertook to report on the progress of Testashadow in the days subsequent.

RACE 6: Fitzy & Wippa's Fast & Furious Stakes (Group 2) 1200m

  • Chipanda – which was fractious in the barrier, began awkwardly and then was crowded between Smart Amelia and Foxplay and shifted in. As a consequence Chipanda lost ground (3L).
  • Smart Amelia – began awkwardly. Held up in the early part of the straight.
  • Awoke – on jumping made heavy contact with I'm Imogen, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. When questioned regarding the performance, rider B Avdulla stated after racing tight amongst runners throughout the early and middle stages, he was not too disappointed with the performance of the filly, particularly given that it was not comfortable on the heavy track today and was stepping up in grade. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have an abrasion to the off-fore cannon and an abrasion to the off-hind stifle. Trainer Mr C Waller concurred with the view of B Avdulla and undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Awoke subsequent to the race.
  • I'm Imogen – on jumping made heavy contact with Awoke, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. Raced wide without cover and making the home turn was taken wider when Global Glamour made the turn awkwardly.
  • Honesty Prevails – leaving the 800m had to be steadied when crowded by Global Glamour, which when racing ungenerously shifted in away from Bacarella. Rider J Collett could offer no excuse for the poor performance of the filly and added it was most disappointing in that it was a beaten horse shortly after straightening. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer R Worthington advised that in his view Honesty Prevails would derive benefit from today's run and attributed today's performance to the fact that the filly did not enjoy a seemless run throughout the event and may not have appreciated racing first up on today's heavy track. Mr Worthington undertook to report back to the Stewards on the condition and the future race plans for the filly subsequent to the race.
  • I Am A Star – for some distance approaching the 600m raced tight and bumped with Honesty Prevails on a number of occasions as I Am A Star shifted out away from the heels of Rather Sweet.
  • Global Glamour – laid in under pressure in the straight. Rider T Berry stated the filly raced greenly throughout the event and made the home turn awkwardly.

RACE 7: Tattersals Club Chelmsford Stakes (Group 2) 1600m

  • Prized Icon – sustained a graze to the near-side shoulder en route to the course. The colt was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. Made contact with Preferment at the start. Rider K O'Hara advised that she had been instructed to be on the speed, however when Storm The Stars showed intent to lead she elected to race outside that horse. She added Prized Icon overraced throughout, refused to settle and consequently did not finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr J Cummings agreed with the assessment of K O'Hara in that Prized Icon had raced too keenly in the run and consequently was left without a finishing effort. He added the colt had pleased the stable in the lead up to today's race and, although it had drifted significantly in the market, he was confident of it performing well. Mr Cummings undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Prized Icon and the future race plans for the colt subsequent to the race.
  • Preferment – made contact with Prized Icon at the start.

RACE 8: Tattersals Club Tramway Stakes (Group 2) 1400m

  • Happy Clapper – slow to begin.
  • Gust Of Wind – rider J Parr stated that the mare felt awkward in its action near the 1000m and again approaching the 600m and as a consequence he did not fully test his mount over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Sargent advised Gust Of Wind would now be retired to stud.
  • Sadler's Lake – rider H Bowman could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Sadler's Lake subsequent to the race.
  • Cosmic Cube – rider T Angland stated the only explanation he could offer for today's poor performance was that the gelding was not comfortable on the heavy track conditions. A postrace veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

  • Sarajevo – was a late withdrawal at 7.54am on veterinary advice when it was found to have an elevated temperature.

  • Federal – slow to begin.
  • Japonisme – rider H Bowman stated that his mount travelled strongly in the early and middle stages of the event, but when asked to quicken from the 400m did not respond as he had expected and was most disappointed. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller stated that the only explanation he could offer for today's performance was that under the weight of 60 kilograms on today's heavy track the gelding had not been able to quicken when the tempo increased from the 400m. Mr Waller undertook to report back to the Stewards on the condition of Japonisme and the future race plans for the gelding subsequent to the race.
  • Hidden Pearl – rider App. B Grylls stated that the only explanation she could offer for today's performance was that the mare was stepping up in grade today and was not entirely comfortable on the heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
