The Cup 'Call of the Card'

Well supported - some big bets came in for Willing Foe at Crown Casino's 'Call of the Card'

The Call of the Card has been held for yet another year at the and the bookies have opened up their shoulders to let on some high stakes on a number of Cup runners. The favourite Admire Rakti was the subject of the largest bet of the day of $50,000 at $6 and attracted the most number of bets. However, the doubters are out there with the Japanese raider trying to carry a modern day weight-carrying record and become the first horse to complete the Caulfield-Melbourne Cups double since 2001.

He wasn't the only horse that got support though. The action came alive when Tom Waterhouse backed Godolphin to break their Cup curse with a bet on Willing Foe to win $250,000, while good bets also came for Cox Plate runner-up Fawkner. Of the outsiders, some interesting nibbles were seen for Seismos and two of the Waller runners in Who Shot Thebarman and Opinion.

The price that the market leaders settle on tomorrow is a subject of much debate tonight as punters read over the form. There is growing thought that Admire Rakti will start around the $6 mark on race day, supported by the fact the bookies seem happy to take him on. As always there will be money for locally trained horses to withstand the International invasion. Expect Fawkner and Signoff to gain good support on the day.

As always, the 2014 instalment of the Cup is a great betting race. With a few market moves likely, it will be hard for the bookies to keep a book that keeps them on top.
