Vet Notes

  • Mandalong Kiss (Race 1) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have an abrasion to the offside hock and was displaying a poor post-race recovery and respiratory distress. Trainer Mr G Nickson advised that Mandalong Kiss would now be spelled. On this assurance no action was taken.
  • Chaquinta (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the off-hind leg and had a small abrasion to the near-side knee. Trainer Mr J Cleary advised the mare would now be spelled. On this assurance no action was taken.
  • Doesn't Make Sense (Race 3) – a pre-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed a laceration to the near-hind cannon. Doesn't Make Sense was passed fit to start. Began awkwardly.
  • Cool In Black (Race 3) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding abraded both front bumpers.
  • Purrari (Race 4) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be coughing. Co-trainer Mr A Bott was advised a veterinary clearance would be required, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to Purrari racing again.
  • Thronum (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia. Co-trainer Mr A Bott advised Thronum would now be spelled. Mr Bott was advised that a veterinary clearance, including the results of a satisfactory ECG, must be provided prior to the colt barrier trialling to the satisfaction of the Stewards.
  • Divine Prophet (Race 5)  – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt lost its near-hind plate in running.

Penalties & Fines

  • B Shinn, rider of Rosa Carolina was fined the sum of $500 under AR137(b) for failing to ride his mount out to the end of the race.
  • B. Shinn, rider of Prized Icon pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that passing the 250m he shifted his mount out when not clear of Oculist, which was crowded and taken out onto Coonawarra, which was also checked and lost its running when taken across the heels of Swear. B Shinn's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 2 October 2016 and to expire on Sunday, 9 October 2016, on which day he may ride.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: #Theraces Handicap 2000m

  • More to Gain – slow to begin.
  • Plot Twist – slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Oh So Splendido – overraced in the early stages and after being crossed by Cramming near the 1600m was steadied away from the heels of that runner. Rider G Schofield stated the only excuse he could offer for today's performance was the gelding raced keenly in the run. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Mandalong Kiss – raced keenly in the early stages. Rounding the home turn was bumped on a number of occasions by More To Gain, which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of Oh So Splendido to obtain clear running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have an abrasion to the offside hock and was displaying a poor post-race recovery and respiratory distress. Trainer Mr G Nickson advised that Mandalong Kiss would now be spelled. On this assurance no action was taken.
  • Cramming – when questioned regarding racing in a more forward position today, rider C Reith stated his instructions were from his wide draw to be positive on the gelding. He added after commencing well, when runners to his inside, principally Oh So Splendido which he had expected to take up a forward position, looked to obtain cover, he then elected to roll forward and take up a position outside the lead. Trainer Mr G Thompson confirmed the instructions, however advised Stewards he had expected Cramming to settle in a position 4th or 5th with cover and was disappointed to see the gelding racing up outside the leader.
  • Salthouse – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 2: 2016 Queen's Cup (Group 3) 2400m

  • Zero To Ten – raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Alegria – when questioned regarding his riding in the middle stages, rider T Clark stated that he was under no specific instructions other than he anticipated following Junoob in the run. He added when the tempo of the race, particularly in the middle stages, was much slower than average, his mount commenced to race a little keenly and he elected to make a forward move approaching the 800m to take advantage of his light weight so that his mount was not disadvantaged when the race developed into a sprint home. T Clark further stated there was no preconceived plan to ride his mount in this manner, but was an option he took in the race when Junoob, which he was following, did not quicken as he had anticipated it would.
  • Chaquinta – rider C Reith reported that his mount raced flatly today and was somewhat disappointing, although stepping up significantly in grade. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the off-hind leg and had a small abrasion to the near-side knee. Trainer Mr J Cleary advised the mare would now be spelled. On this assurance no action was taken.

RACE 3: TAB Highway Handicap 1500m

  • Red Hot Tango – the gelding was a late withdrawal at 9.15am when no rider was available.
  • Doesn't Make Sense – a pre-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed a laceration to the near-hind cannon. Doesn't Make Sense was passed fit to start. Began awkwardly.
  • Trying – slow to begin.
  • Van Halen – slow to begin. Overraced in the early stages and near the 1100m was steadied away from the heels of Coming In Hot. Badly held up in the in the early part of the straight and at the 300m had to be checked away from the heels of Coming In Hot. Rider J Collett was cautioned against the practice of positioning himself too close to the heels of runners in front. After obtaining clear running for a brief distance between the 250m and the 150m, was then held up after racing in restricted room between Coming In Hot and Sadhika (C Reith), which shifted out. Consequently Van Halen went to the line without being tested. C Reith was advised to exercise more care.
  • Vella Longchick – began very awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Distinctive Look, before then shifting back out across the heels of Coming In Hot and was checked. In this incident rider J Ford briefly lost the use of his offside iron. Hung out rounding the home turn.
  • Destined To Win – shortly after straightening Coming In Hot shifted in and made contact with Shotgun Roulette. Consequently Shotgun Roulette shifted back out, making contact with Coming In Hot, which became unbalanced and ran out, resulting in Destined To Win being checked and Distinctive Look being hampered and carried wider. Rider K O'Hara (Coming In Hot) stated that in this incident she felt her mount was galloped on behind by Van Halen, which resulted in it becoming unbalanced. Destined To Win raced wide without cover.
  • Sadhika – did not obtain clear running until passing the 200m.
  • Coming In Hot – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Cool In Black – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding abraded both front bumpers.

RACE 4: TAB Reginald Allen Quality (Listed) 1400m

  • Invincibella – began awkwardly, shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of Fabvier. For a short distance approaching the first turn Invincibella commenced to overrace and got its head up.
  • Smart Amelia – slow to begin. Rider G Schofield stated from his inside draw he was instructed to be positive on the filly as it had a tendency to miss the start at previous runs. He added he was able to take up a position with cover behind the early leaders, however, his mount raced flat and was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Cummings advised that in his view the filly may not have been suited by today's firmer surface. He undertook to report back on the condition of Smart Amelia subsequent to the race.
  • Purrari – knuckled on jumping. Briefly tightened near the 1200m. Rider J Parr stated he had intended taking up a forward position and possibly leading on the filly, but Purrari blundered on jumping and consequently lost ground. He added he then settled in a midfield position, whereby the filly travelled comfortably, however he could offer no explanation for its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be coughing. Co-trainer Mr A Bott was advised a veterinary clearance would be required, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to Purrari racing again.
  • Bring Me The Bling – near the 1200m Purrari and Bring Me The Bling were briefly tightened by Fabvier.
  • Rosa Carolina – B Shinn, rider of 6th placegetter, was fined the sum of $500 under AR137(b) for failing to ride his mount out to the end of the race.
  • Fabvier – rider B Avdulla stated his mount was stirred up prior to the race today. He added that he had to make some use of his mount to cross Purrari in the early stages, but after obtaining a position on the back of Smart Amelia never travelled comfortably. B Avdulla further stated when placed under pressure from the 500m his mount was disappointing and may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Thompson advised Fabvier would now be spelled.

RACE 5: Stan Fox Stakes (Group 2) 1500m

  • Good Standing – slow to begin.
  • Impending – for some distance near the 1000m made contact with Mediterranean as Impending held its position on the back of Divine Prophet. Near the 300m shifted out around the heels of Divine Prophet and in so doing made contact with Mediterranean.
  • Mediterranean – raced keenly in the middle stages. Rider B Shinn stated he was caught wide in the early stages and, after making contact with Impending on a number of occasions as he endeavoured to obtain a position with cover on the back of Divine Prophet, he was able to follow that runner throughout the middle stages. He added in the straight Mediterranean was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden advised Mediterranean would now be spelled.
  • Thronum – rider T Angland stated the colt was able to obtain the lead comfortably in the early stages, whereby it was able to set a moderate tempo. He added Thronum was disappointing in its failure to respond to his riding in the straight and the only excuse he could offer was the colt was not suited by today's firmer surface. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia. Co-trainer Mr A Bott advised Thronum would now be spelled. Mr Bott was advised that a veterinary clearance, including the results of a satisfactory ECG, must be provided prior to the colt barrier trialling to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

RACE 6: Schweppes Gloaming Stakes (Group 3) 1800m

  • Prized Icon – on return to scale the Stewards considered an objection lodged by B Shinn, rider of 4th placegetter Prized Icon, against Retaliation being placed 3rd, alleging interference near the 150m. After considering all the evidence, the Stewards found that approaching the 150m Prized Icon, after being held up for clear running for some distance, shifted out to improve and established a narrow run between Swear and Retaliation and a short distance later Retaliation then shifted out, crowding the running of Prized Icon, resulting in Prized Icon making contact with Retaliation and Swear. As Stewards were of the view that had the interference not occurred Prized Icon would have finished in advance of Retaliation, the protest was upheld. The placings were amended to read: Veladero 1 st , Honeywine 2 nd , Prized Icon 3 rd and Retaliation 4 th. At a subsequent inquiry B Avdulla, rider of Retaliation was reprimanded and advised he must stop riding when his mounts comments to shift ground. When questioned regarding his riding of Prized Icon, B Shinn stated after following Oculist throughout the event, he was then unable to shift to the outside of that runner as he was racing inside the heels of Coonawarra. He said that he then was obliged to follow Honeywine into the straight, however when that runner did not initially quicken he then was held up until near the 250m before shifting out to obtain clear running.
  • Swear – which was lying on the off-side portion of its barrier and beginning awkwardly, shifted in across behind runners in the early stages. Overraced in the early stages. Over the final 150m raced in restricted room between High Mist and Prized Icon and made contact with Prized Icon, which was taken out by Retaliation, on a number of occasions.
  • Lasqueti Spirit – on jumping was crowded for room and taken in onto the hindquarter of Veladero when crowded by Tumultuous, which itself was crowded by Oculist, which began awkwardly and ran in. Checked passing the 250m.
  • Oculist – began awkwardly. Overraced in the early and middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Coonawarra – raced wide without cover from the 1300m. B Shinn pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that passing the 250m he shifted his mount out when not clear of Oculist, which was crowded and taken out onto Coonawarra, which was also checked and lost its running when taken across the heels of Swear. B Shinn's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 2 October 2016 and to expire on Sunday, 9 October 2016, on which day he may ride.
  • Tumultuous – briefly held up in the early part of the straight and for some distance leaving the 100m had difficulty when attempting to obtain clear running to the inside of Veladero.
  • High Mist – rider G Schofield reported that his saddle slipped back on jumping, resulting in him being placed at a disadvantage throughout the event and restricted his ability to ride his mount out over the concluding stages in particular.

RACE 7: Ronald McDonald House Westmead Golden Pendant (Group 2) 1400m

  • Heavens Above – slow to begin.
  • Serene Majesty – bumped with Sold For Song on jumping. Steadied from the heels of Ammirata near the 900m.
  • Sold For Song – bumped with Serene Majesty on jumping.
  • Pearls – briefly tightened by First Seal, which laid in away from Denmagic approaching the first turn.
  • Ammirata - near the 900m was steadied away from the heels of First Seal.
  • Dixie Blossoms – when questioned regarding being ridden more forward today, T Clark stated he had no specific instructions from connections. He added from his wide draw he was hopeful of obtaining a position in advance of some of the back markers and for this reason he placed his mount under pressure leaving the barriers. T Clark further stated that when C Reith, rider of Denmagic, which was positioned to his inside, was restraining his mount and had shown clear intent not to go forward, he allowed Dixie Blossoms to take up a position outside the lead.

RACE 8: Shannon Stakes (Group 2) 1500m

  • Entirely Platinum – slow to begin. Raced tight inside Cape Crusader for some distance in the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination of Entirely Platinum, which weakened in the straight, did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Old North – slow to begin.
  • Cosmic Cube - blundered near the 1400m.
  • Hi World – after being crossed by Cape Crusader near the 600m, Entirely Platinum shifted out and made contact with Hi World, which resulted in Hi World being caught wide without cover from that point. Rounding the home turn and shortly after straightening Hi World and Cosmic Cube made contact as Cosmic Cube endeavoured to shift out around the heels of Entirely Platinum. Rider B Shinn stated after his mount jumped well he chose to take up a more forward position than he had anticipated. He added he was obliged to then make some use of his mount throughout the early and middle stages to hold his forward position. After being taken three wide from the 600m, when Entirely Platinum shifted to the outside of Cape Crusader, his mount then commenced to give ground. B Shinn further stated in his view Hi World did not appreciate the firmer track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination of Hi World, which weakened in the straight, did not reveal any abnormalities. The inquiry was adjourned so the Stewards can interview co-trainer Mr L Freedman.
  • Moral Victory – held up for clear running until passing the 250m.

RACE 9: Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1400m

  • Dylan's Rojo - began awkwardly. Overraced in the early stages and for some distance leaving the 1000m was steadied away from the heels of Extensible.
  • Magical Stance – began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with Encosta Line and became unbalanced. Overraced in the early stages.
  • Encosta Line – on jumping shifted in and made contact with Magical Stance and shortly after became badly unbalanced when bumped by Magical Stance.
  • Vassal – approaching the first turn the gelding, which was inclined to race keenly, was checked when Happy Hannah shifted out marginally.
  • Herne's Oak – passing the 1000m steadied to avoid the heels of Harry Hotspur, which shifted out to obtain a position to the outside of the leader Bullrush.
  • Pindan Pearl – over the concluding stages could not be fully tested when awkwardly placed to the inside of Harry Hotspur.
  • O'Reilly's Revenge – raced wide without cover. Rider App. D Panya dropped her whip passing the 300m.
  • Harry Hotspur – rider T Angland stated his mount was inclined to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages, which resulted in him having to stop riding and straighten his mount near the 20m so as to avoid causing interference to Pindan Pearl.
