Zipping Classic Leaves a Legacy

Published: 10 Nov 2014

Cup week come down or post Cup week fill up?

Zipping was a horse the punters could rely on a week after the dust had settled on the week that was, winning the Sandown Classic over four consecutive years from 2007–2010 before having the race renamed the Zipping Classic in honour.

Zipping himself enjoyed a long career that included three placings in the Cox Place as he amassed over $4.5 million in prize money and won 17 out of his 47 starts.

We really only got to see the best of him as he matured winning his first Group 1 race in the Australian Cup as an 8 Year Old, then the Turnbull Stakes as a 9 Year Old

The Zipping Classic is sure to be a target race for Team Williams again as they prepare Cox Plate runner up Fawkner and 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon to continue the stable tradition.

Fawkner went close to running a career best when he just couldn't withstand the masterful ride and performance of Adelaide in the Cox Plate, while Green Moon may have been kept fresh for this after not being taxed running in the Melbourne Cup.

Others in early nominations for the Zipping Classic include last Saturdays Queen Elizabeth Stakes runner up Prince of Penzance, Andre Fabres Melbourne Cup runner Au Revoir, while Lord Van Percy finally gets his first start in Australia.

The full Race Guide for the Zipping Classic will be available this Thursday.
