Vet Notes

  • Keep On Charging (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the off-hind pastern. Trainer Ms R Dunn advised that the gelding would now be spelled. Notwithstanding this advice Ms Dunn was advised that Keep On Charging would be required to barrier trial prior to racing again.
  • Herne's Oak (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Mr J Bruce, representing trainer Mr B Baker, said that Herne's Oak was working well in the lead up to today's race and the stable were confident of a forward showing. He added he was at a loss to explain the manner in which the gelding weakened in the straight, apart from the fact that it may not have run the distance of 2400m of today's race. The performance of Herne's Oak, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable and before being permitted to race again the gelding must perform satisfactorily at an official trial.
  • Pinstripe Lane (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be acutely lame in the off-fore leg. Mr Paul Snowden, representing co-trainers L and T Corstens, was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Pinstripe Lane barrier trialling to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

Penalties & Fines

  • R Hutchings, replaced rider of Ryker was overweight, and permission was granted for C Reith to be substituted as the rider of the gelding. R Hutchings was fined $400 under AR120(b) and was advised that should he be in breach of AR120(b) in the near future consideration may be given to issuing a suspension of his licence to ride in races.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Bedford CA Handicap 1400m

  • Cadogan – for a short distance after the 800m raced keenly and had to be steadied off the heels of Gold Artisan.
  • Zumbelina – blundered near the 300m.

RACE 2: Goldners Horse Transport Golden Gift 1100m

  • Reflectivity – dislodged its rider shortly after leaving the parade. Rider T Berry was uninjured. On arrival at the barriers the colt was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. Raced greenly in the straight and over the concluding stages Reflectivity, which was closing the race off strongly, commenced to hang in, causing some tightening to Ipso Facto before being corrected by its rider. In this incident Florid was bumped. T Berry explained that over about the last 50m his mount commenced to hang in under pressure and, as he was concerned that it was starting to encroach on the running line of Ipso Facto, he was obliged to stop riding and straighten his mount in the run to the post. Stewards in accepting T Berry's explanation were of the view that, whilst his actions may have prejudiced his chances of winning the race, the corrective measures he undertook were appropriate in the circumstances.
  • Serena Bay – turned its head to the side as the start was effected and began awkwardly.
  • Terwilliker – slow to begin. Raced greenly in the early stages and near the first turn became awkward on the heels of Keep On Charging and got its head up.
  • Korma – slow to begin and shortly after the start made contact with Allied Power. Near the first turn the colt, which was racing greenly, shifted in away from Reflectivity and in so doing hampered Allied Power.
  • Allied Power – began awkwardly, resulting in rider T Angland becoming unbalanced.
  • Salvador – shortly after the start became awkward on the heels of Florid when Keep On Charging shifted out slightly. In the incident Salvador blundered. Near the 800m brushed the running rail.  
  • Ipso Facto – near the 800m brushed the running rail.
  • Keep On Charging – near the 800m the gelding, which was racing tight to the inside of Allied Power, became unbalanced and bumped Allied Power, which also became unbalanced. The Stewards considered the performance of Keep On Charging, which tailed out, to be unacceptable. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the off-hind pastern. Trainer Ms R Dunn advised that the gelding would now be spelled. Notwithstanding this advice Ms Dunn was advised that Keep On Charging would be required to barrier trial prior to racing again.
  • Florid – hung out rounding the home turn, raced greenly and laid out, resulting in rider B Avdulla changing his whip over into the left hand. Bumped by Reflectivity over the concluding stages.

RACE 3: HQ Insurance Handicap 1800m

  • Montauk – prior to this race trainer Mr C Waller advised that, with blinkers on today and in an endeavour to offset the wide draw, it was the intention to have the gelding ridden more prominently. He said at the gelding's most recent start at Rosehill on 19 November 2016 the rider, as instructed, was neutral from the barriers. He said that on that day the horse raced with little interest and therefore today in an attempt to have it race more competitively it would be in Montauk's best interests to be ridden positively if possible. Began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with The Rumour File. Despite being ridden along thereafter Montauk failed to show sufficient speed and consequently settled further back than intended. Held up until near the 200m.
  • Balmain Boy – began awkwardly, resulting in rider App. N Heywood becoming unbalanced. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, App. N Heywood explained that the gelding began only fairly and in the early stages he was caught wide without cover. He added in the circumstances he elected to press on and find a position closer to the rail, which he was able to do after the 1200m. He said his mount came under pressure after the 600m and was disappointing in its failure to finish off after travelling satisfactorily throughout the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr L Bridge advised that Balmain Boy would now be spelled.
  • Shalmaneser – began awkwardly.
  • Promas – slow to begin.
  • The Rumour File – on jumping shifted in and bumped Balmain Boy. When questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer Mr C Waller stated, whilst the gelding had not been competitive in its two previous runs over shorter distances, he had hoped today with it stepping up in distance that The Rumour File would perform better today. He added that today The Rumour File was able to benefit from a race which was run at a genuine tempo and he believed these two factors were the principal reasons for the gelding being successful today.
  • Liapari – from an outside barrier shifted in across behind runners in the early stages.
  • Eschiele – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider App. A Adkins explained that his mount travelled well throughout the early and middle stages, but when under pressure in the straight failed to run on and he believed the principal reason behind the gelding's failure in today's race was that it did not appreciate the firm surface. A post-race veterinary examination of the did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Egyptian Ruler – when questioned, App. D Panya explained that in the early and middle stages she obtained a position behind Hunter Jack, however after the 800m Eschiele, despite her best endeavours, was able to shift out, resulting in Egyptian Ruler travelling wide without cover after the 800m.
  • Hunter Jack – rider T Angland was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) in respect to using the whip on seven occasions prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty the Stewards took into account the totality of whip strikes in the straight.

RACE 4: TAB Highway Handicap 1500m

  • Kilmarnock – began awkwardly and lost ground (2L), resulting in its rider App. D Panya becoming unbalanced.
  • Delightful Feeling – began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the straight.
  • Top Magic – buffeted on jumping between Al Cubana and Major Sharpe, which began awkwardly and shifted out.
  • Gambled – briefly crowded for room by Bill 'N' Eve, which was taken in by Major Sharpe near the 1300m.
  • Bill 'N' Eve – when questioned, rider A Cavallo explained that after the 1000m his mount was not travelling well enough to maintain its position, which enabled Major Sharpe, which was racing to his outside in advance of him, to shifted in and take up a position behind Sculptures.
  • Al Cubana – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Twilight Charade – lost its off-fore plate in running.

RACE 5: Sire Custodians Handicap 2400m

  • My Giuliano - when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider J Parr explained that he was caught very wide without cover in the early and middle stages and was therefore obliged to make use of his mount to take up a position outside the leader at about the 1400m. He added, whilst My Giuliano was beaten a considerable margin in the straight, he felt that the early work that it had to do told on its effort in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Zourkhan – rounding the home turn was badly held up and was checked away from the heels of the tiring Ascot Red.
  • Mr Steal – in the early stages, whilst being vigorously ridden along, the gelding took some time to muster speed and travelled wide without cover until about the 1800m. Whilst in the opinion of the Stewards it did not affect his finishing position, App. J Innes Jr, rider of 5th placegetter, was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out hands and heels to the finish as much as possible.
  • Soviet Courage – when questioned, rider G Schofield stated the intention was to be forward in the race. He said his mount began on terms, however despite being positive on the gelding in the early stages, it could not go the early speed and when he observed a number of runners to his inside holding their position, he elected in the circumstances to shift in behind runners and travelled further back then had been intended.
  • Herne's Oak – when questioned regarding the poor performance, rider App. D Panya stated she was pleased with the manner in which the gelding travelled throughout the race, however when placed under pressure just prior to the home turn, it failed to quicken and in her opinion raced like a tired horse. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Mr J Bruce, representing trainer Mr B Baker, said that Herne's Oak was working well in the lead up to today's race and the stable were confident of a forward showing. He added he was at a loss to explain the manner in which the gelding weakened in the straight, apart from the fact that it may not have run the distance of 2400m of today's race. The performance of Herne's Oak, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable and before being permitted to race again the gelding must perform satisfactorily at an official trial.
  • Maven Wiz – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider App. A Adkins stated his mount travelled comfortably in the run, however when the race developed into a sprint home after about the 600m it did not quicken and appeared not to appreciate the firm track today. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Ascot Red – when questioned, rider C Reith stated he was content with the manner in which the gelding travelled until approximately the 600m, where it came under pressure and compounded noticeably in the straight. He indicated on returning to scale Ascot Red's recovery was of concern. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities, other than the gelding shifted its near-hind plate. The performance of Ascot Red was considered unacceptable and before being permitted to race again it must perform satisfactorily in a trial. Trainer Mr J Sargent advised he would now have the gelding undergo a thorough veterinary examination, which would include blood samples, the results of which he will report to the Stewards.
  • Pinstripe Lane – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be acutely lame in the off-fore leg. Mr Paul Snowden, representing co-trainers L and T Corstens, was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Pinstripe Lane barrier trialling to the satisfaction of the Stewards.
  • Der Meister – rider J Victoire will be interviewed regarding his riding out of the gelding over the concluding stages.
  • Pursuit Of Honour – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider T Angland explained that the gelding travelled well and for this reason after the 600m he elected to shift out in an endeavour to improve. He said, however Pursuit Of Honour was under heavy pressure, failed to respond and was most disappointing in the manner in which it failed to close off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr C Duckworth, representing trainer Mr C Waller, said in his opinion Pursuit Of Honour had come to the end of its preparation and it is now the intention for the gelding to be spelled.

RACE 6: Thoroughbred Breeders NSW Handicap 1500m

  • Unbiased – slow to begin.
  • Embley – slow to begin.
  • Asinara – blundered near the 1400m.
  • Trafalgar – near the 100m the gelding, which was commencing to make some ground, became awkward on the heels of Romney's Choice and was shifted out away from that runner's heels to improve.
  • Romney's Choice – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Darts Away – rider B Loy stated that his mount ran on fairly in the straight in a race that was run at an even tempo. He added that, whilst Darts Away did not close off strongly, he believed that in the circumstances the performance had merit and he added the gelding would appreciate being stepped up in distance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 7: #Theraces Handicap 1400m

  • Ryker – as R Hutchings was overweight, permission was granted for C Reith to be substituted as the rider of the gelding. R Hutchings was fined $400 under AR120(b) and was advised that should he be in breach of AR120(b) in the near future consideration may be given to issuing a suspension of his licence to ride in races. Rider C Reith was unable to provide any tangible explanation for the gelding's performance. He said he had enjoyed a nice run in the race one out one back, but rounding the home turn Ryker was a beaten horse and weakened considerably over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr P Snowden was unable to provide any explanation for the gelding's performance today. He said, although some use had to be made of Ryker in the early stages, nonetheless he was disappointed with the gelding weakening in the manner in which it did in the run home.
  • Wine Tales – began awkwardly.
  • Rock Forthe Ladies – on jumping was buffeted for room between Onerous and Unequivocal. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which performed disappointingly, did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Onerous – shortly after the start was crowded when taken across the heels of Snoopy by Rock Forthe Ladies, which shifted out. When questioned, rider G Schofield explained that due to an incident at the start his mount settled further back than had been intended. He said after the 600m he shifted to the outside of Rock For the Ladies in an endeavour to improve. He added in the early part of the straight Onerous commenced to lay in and for this reason proved somewhat difficult for him to place his mount under full pressure. G Schofield further stated that approaching the 200m he changed his whip over into his right hand, however Onerous when again under pressure failed to respond and only finished the race of onepaced. G Schofield was advised that, although the Stewards accepted that Onerous was laying in, he was nonetheless advised that he should ride his mounts in a manner that is not open to query. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Gold Ambition – for some distance after the 300m was awkwardly placed on the heels of Snoopy.
  • Unequivocal – held up for clear running until passing the 200m and when shifting to the outside of Moher near the 150m hampered the tiring Ryker.

RACE 8: Roadwork Solutions Handicap 1200m

  • Magic Alibi – shifted out at the start and made contact with Madotti.
  • Fiftyshadesofgrey – began awkwardly. Near the 250m was eased when disappointed for a run inside Zin Zan Elsie, which shifted in.
  • Interstellar – began awkwardly.
  • Roeinda – slow to begin.
  • Interstellar – rounding the home turn was inclined to lay out.

RACE 9: tab.com.au Handicap 1100m

  • Rose of Man – which was fractious in the barriers, was slow to begin.
  • Secret Trail – slow to begin. Raced wide without cover throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. An inquiry was opened into the riding tactics of App. N Heywood, in particular reference to his vigour for some distance in the early part of the straight. After taking evidence from App. Heywood in the presence of his master and co-trainer Mr P Snowden, the matter was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
  • Noble Joey – over the concluding stages was inclined to lay in.
  • Last Witness – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
