Summary of Races

RACE 1 – Happy 2017 Handicap 1200m

  • Charlie Chap – from inside barrier to hold a more forward position; settled behind the leader.
  • Dunatun – began very awkwardly and shifted in abruptly across the heels of Radiant Choice and lost ground (2L). When questioned J Collett stated that he had been instructed to try and ride his mount along early to take up a handy position if possible. He said that on jumping, after being slow to begin, his mount then ran in and made contact with the hindquarter of Colesberg and consequently lost ground. When questioned as to the reason why he then improved to race wide without cover in the early stages, J Collett stated that as he had perceived the early tempo of the race to be very slow, he felt the ground was superior off the rail, having regard to his instructions his best option was to try and take up a more forward position so as to take advantage of the slow early tempo. Raced wide without cover throughout the event.
  • Colesberg – slow to begin. Bumped on the hindquarter at the start by Dunatun. Carried wider by Single Bullet near the 100m.
  • Single Bullet – Rider B Melham was spoken to in respect to his mount shifting in after the winning post crowding Dunatun and Radiant Choice. B Melham stated that the colt raced too keenly in the run and consequently did not finish the race off as expected. He added that in the straight Single Bullet was inclined to lay out under pressure.
  • Callmetrouble – began awkwardly, shifted in and was eased when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Radiant Choice. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

 RACE 2 – TAB Rewards Handicap 1400m

  • Jaminzah – to be ridden more forward; settled off the pace. Was inclined to lay in in the straight and when being shifted to the outside of the heels of Redouble near the 250m shifted out abruptly and made contact with Argent D’or. Rider H Bowman stated that he could off no real excuse other than the colt may not have been entirely comfortable on today’s rain affected going. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative L Prior advised that Jaminzah had pleased the stable since its last start at Rosehill on 24 December 2016 but Jaminzah would now be spelled and gelded. Mr Prior undertook to report back on the post race condition of Jaminzah.
  • France – after being fractious in the barriers began awkwardly.
  • Argent D’or – on jumping was bumped on the hindquarter by France.

Rider J Collett could offer no excuse for the first up performance of the gelding and indicated that his mount was under pressure a long way from the finish, particularly after being taken wide on the home turn when France shifted out to improve. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post race recovery. Stable representative L Prior advised that the only excuse the stable could offer for today’s performance was that Cellarman had not been comfortable on today’s rain affected going. Mr Prior undertook to report back on the post race condition of Cellarman.

RACE 3 – Australian Turf Club Handicap 1400m

  • Twist Tops – to be ridden more forward; settled mid field. Began awkwardly.

He added that in his view Magicaz did not stretch out when placed under pressure and was of the opinion that there may have been something amiss with the mare. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer C Karakatsanis advised that in his opinion the mare had not handled today’s soft track conditions and undertook to report back on its post race condition.
  • Roeinda – to go forward and try to lead; led. Bumped with Magicaz at the start.
  • Lycia – slow to begin.
  • Harlem Lady – began awkwardly and got its head up. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages and near the 800m was steadied away from the heels of Twist Tops. Laid out rounding the home turn. Rider apprentice L Magorrian stated that the mare was inclined to race keenly and lay out throughout the event and when placed under pressure in the straight proved somewhat difficult to ride out which resulted in his ability to test the mare being hindered for some distance near the 100m as he pulled his whip through to the left hand. He added that once he was able to use the whip on the mare over the final 100 metres in his left hand, Harlem Lady closed the race off strongly.
  • Heartlings – rider B Shinn could offer no excuse for today’s performance and added that his mount, although it travelled well in the early stages, when asked for an effort was unable to quicken. • Imposing Lass – to go forward and try to lead; led. The mare, which had its head turned to the nearside just prior to the start being effected, began awkwardly.
  • Girl Sunday – rider apprentice J Innes Jnr stated that his mount did not travel throughout on the soft track conditions today and attributed this to the mare’s disappointing performance. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. The post race condition of Girl Sunday will be followed up with the stable in the days subsequent.

T Clark added that from this point he was able to follow Dal Cielo into the race and was satisfied with finishing effort of his mount.
  • Zero Cash – raced keenly in the middle stages and near the 600m was steadied away from the heels of Aspiring. For some distance rounding the home turn was awkwardly placed on the heels of Aspiring before shifting to that horse’s outside near the 250m to improve.
  • Sundance – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider M Dee stated that his mount is better suited when being able to dictate on a moderate tempo, however today with the fast early pace his mount was not suited by having to follow other runners. Mr Farrell was reminded of his obligation to notify Stewards of any change in riding tactics.
  • Invinzabeel – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance H Bowman stated that whilst his mount suffered interference near the 600m it was not comfortable on today’s soft track conditions and attributed this as the main reason for its disappointing performance. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer C Waller agreed with the explanation of H Bowman and stated that it would now be his intention to avoid running the gelding on similar surfaces wherever possible.
  • Bogie – approaching the 600m Bogie, which was inclined to race keenly, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Eminent Duke (D Panya) which shifted in when not quite clear. The interference to Bogie was then exacerbated when the tempo slackened due to Alart and Eminent Duke easing in front. In this incident Invinzabeel had to be checked to avoid the heels of Bogie and shifted in resulting in What Could Be also having to be checked. Apprentice D Panya was reprimanded and advised that she must ensure that she is sufficiently clear to cross other runners when shifting ground. Rider Apprentice J Innes Jnr stated that after having to be steadied away from the heels of Eminent Duke near the 600m his mount lost momentum and then had difficulty in making up ground from this point. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • What Could Be – rider apprentice A Adkins stated that his mount did not travel at any stage on today’s soft track conditions, although it had to be checked near the 600m, in the circumstances he was not disappointed with the gelding’s performance having regard to the fact that it did not handle today’s track conditions. Rider B El-Issa stated his instructions were to endeavour to find cover behind the leaders but after there was no pace in the early stages his mount assumed the lead after he rode his mount along from the barrier. B El-Issa stated that in his view Sudden Blitz would be better ridden being able to obtain cover, however the circumstances of today’s race did not allow him to ride the horse in that manner. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Zaunkonig – raced wide without cover throughout.
  • King’s Officer – near the 250m was directed back to the inside of Hogmanay to obtain clear running.
