RACE 2: Wilkes Quality 1000m

Slowly away. Inclined to lay out making the home turn. Approaching the 100m was steadied away from the heels of Tactical Advantage when that runner shifted out abruptly whilst being struck with the whip. The Stewards accepted that G Schofield had endeavoured to straighten his mount when it commenced to shift ground abruptly. In the circumstances no direct action was taken, other than the Stewards agreed with G Schofield that his decision to pull the whip through to the right hand approaching the 100m may not have been the appropriate course of the action.

  • Harlem Lady – at 9.30am on Thursday, 19 January 2017 Stewards acceded to a request from trainer Mr C Waller to allow the mare to continue to race without blinkers when a notification had been made of a gear change of blinkers first time. Stewards approved the request on the basis that Harlem Lady was stepping up in distance from 1400m, whereby Mr Waller was concerned Harlem Lady would overrace with blinkers on. Mr Waller was fined the sum of $200 for the late notification. Slow to begin. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider H Bowman stated that the mare took up a more forward position today, which was not by instruction, but more so due to the slow early tempo of the race. He said Harlem Lady travelled comfortably in this position, however when placed under pressure in the straight, did not respond to his riding and over the final 400m was inclined to lay out under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be acutely lame in the near-foreleg. Stable representative Mr L Prior advised that Harlem Lady had pleased the stable since its last start at Warwick Farm on 7 January 2017 and had no lameness issues. Bumped on jumping by Nic's Vendetta, which began awkwardly and shifted out.
  • Rothbury – slow to begin. Taken wider near the 1100m. Hung out making the home turn. Rider D Jones stated his mount commenced to race keenly approaching the 600m and as a consequence he shifted to a three wide position to avoid heels. He added, after being taken wider making the home turn when Nic's Vendetta shifted out to improve, his mount then made the home turn awkwardly and, after becoming awkward in its action on straightening, failed to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • White Eagle – soon after the start was hampered when crowded between Farah and Snowbrook, which shifted out slightly.
  • Farah – passing the 1100m had to be steadied away from the heels of Snowbrook when that runner shifted out slightly. In this incident Rothbury was taken wider.
  • Snowbrook – raced keenly in the middle stages.
  • Gold Torque – near the 600m was steadied away from the heels of Farah. For some distance approaching the 200m was held up for clear running between Rothbury and Snowbrook and on the home turn was inconvenienced when Rothbury shifted out.
  • And There Is More – hung out rounding the home turn. When questioned regarding his riding, B Shinn stated if his mount commenced well he was given the option of going forward, as notified to the Stewards. He said that when his mount was not the best to begin and when two runners to his inside, namely Squared and Gold Torque, showed superior speed, he elected to allow his mount to race where comfortable, which resulted in it settling towards the rear of the field. B Shinn added that if he rode his mount forward in his view it would have raced wide without cover and this also influenced his decision to allow And There Is More to settle further back than had been anticipated. He said that, after following Farah into the race and his mount initially responding to his riding, in his opinion it was somewhat disappointing over the final 100m in that it did not finish off as well as he had expected. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

  • Rock Mylady – blundered on jumping. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Star Wars – slow to begin.
  • Olympic Academy – slow to begin. When questioned regarding his riding out of the winner, H Bowman stated that near the 25m he felt his mount had established a winning margin over 2 nd placegetter Sabino Speed and for this reason, whilst he continued to push his mount along, the intensity of his riding reduced, whereby over the final two strides he desisted from riding his mount to the finish. He added that he expressed surprise at the manner in which Olympic Academy relaxed over the concluding stages when he stopped riding it out and the only explanation he could offer for his actions was that he misjudged the margin he was in advance of Sabino Speed. H Bowman pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137(b) for failing to ride his mount out to the finish of the race and was fined the sum of $600.
  • King's Officer – slow to begin.
  • Liapari – when questioned regarding his riding rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight, B Avdulla stated, after following Olympic Academy into the race, he had anticipated endeavouring to shift King's Officer out and then secure clear running to the outside of Olympic Academy. He added that when King's Officer held its position to his outside and Olympic Academy shifted out slightly he was then held up for some distance on the back of Olympic Academy, whereby ultimately he had to shift back to the inside of that runner to obtain clear running near the 200m. B Avdulla said he then endeavoured to improve between Olympic Academy and Sabino Speed, however when Olympic Academy then shifted back in slightly and closed a narrow run, he was disappointed for that run and consequently was obliged to check his mount and could not fully ride it out to the finish as a result. When questioned as to whether there was an opportunity to improve to the inside of Olympic Academy on straightening, B Avdulla stated that he was concerned by taking this option it may have resulted in his mount being held up on the heels of Cauthen's Power and he felt in the circumstances his best option was to endeavour to go to the outside of Olympic Academy. After considering B Avdulla's explanation, the Stewards found that his option of shifting to the outside was reasonable in the circumstances having regard to his evidence.

  • Ninth Legion – rider B Shinn could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance of the gelding and indicated his mount was under pressure prior to entering the straight. A postrace veterinary examination revealed the gelding had lost its off-fore plate in running and had sustained lacerations to both heel bulbs. Trainer Mr P Robl advised, having regard to the injury suffered by Ninth Legion in today's race, the gelding would now be spelled. On this assurance no further action was taken.

RACE 8: Huawei Handicap 1400m

  • King Darci – acting on veterinary advice that the gelding was unfit to start subsequent to being pricked by its farrier when being shod, Stewards permitted the late withdrawal at 9.34am. Trainer Mr T Martin was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to King Darci racing again.

Louie Sea Kay, which was following Avonaco, was stadied to avoid the heels of that runner, which further resulted in Sonic Swish, which was also inclined to race keenly, having to be checked away from the heels of Louie Sea Kay. Rider T Berry stated his mount was disadvantaged by the slow tempo, which resulted in the gelding overracing badly throughout the middle stages and consequently it was unable to finish the race off. A postrace veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr L Prior advised that Sonic Swish would now be given a brief let up before resuming and coming back in distance for its next race start. Mr Prior undertook to report back on the progress of the gelding in the days subsequent.
  • Avonaco – when questioned regarding his riding, H Bowman stated his mount took up a more forward position today due to the slow tempo, however it overraced badly and for this reason he was obliged to shift his mount to a three wide position to the outside of Hogmanay near the 800m. He added, whilst it was not his intention to improve into the event from that point, Avonaco continued to race keenly and as a result he allowed his mount to stride forward in an endeavour to work into the race. H Bowman said he endeavoured to employ this tactic as Avonaco has been out of form this preparation and he felt it may assist its chances, irrespective of being wide without cover, and would provide it with the best opportunity to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr L Prior stated Avonaco had raced disappointingly this preparation and the gelding would now be leaving the stable. The Stewards ruled, having regard to the fact it was eased down in the straight, Avonaco must trial before being permitted to race again.

He said Alart then obtained a position on the back of Suspense, however commenced to overrace and for this reason he was obliged to shift off to a three wide position, whereby he followed Eminent Duke. J Collett added his mount continued to race keenly and for this reason he was again obliged to shift to the outside of Eminent Duke approaching the 700m, whereby Alart was then obliged to race four wide without cover for the remainder of the event. Stewards accepted J Collett's explanation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
