Near the 150m Thy Kingdom Come, which was giving ground, was steadied when crowded for room by Menari (J Parr), which shifted out when not clear. J Parr was reprimanded. Moreover, J Parr was further advised that he should show his fellow riders far more consideration in similar circumstances.

He said throughout the early and middle stages his mount raced keenly and as he approached the 600m, whilst he had hoped he could get to the outside of Showtime, he was too far entrenched inside the heels of that runner to come to its outside. He said irrespective of this though Malahat was racing directly to the outside of Showtime and in the circumstances he would be unable to improve between those runners or, alternatively, come to the outside of Malahat approaching the home turn. He added his only option in the early part of the straight was to ride for luck in the hope he would be able to proceed between Hualalai and Showtime, however when those two runners maintained their positions, he was obliged to come back and near the 200m was shifted to the outside of Pariah to improve. J Parr further stated that, once obtaining a clear run, Menari closed the race off strongly.
  • Hualalai – passing the 200m Hualalai and Thy Kingdom Come were tightened for room by Malahat (C Brown), which shifted in whilst racing greenly. Both Showtime and Hualalai raced tight inside Malahat for some distance thereafter before both being steadied when crowded for room when Malahat again shifted in when not quite clear near the 100m. Meliboea then had to be checked to avoid the heels of Lets Get Nauti Gal and Milanese Girl, which was trailing, was badly checked as a consequence and shifted out, hampering Savatiano. • Cauthen's Power – prior to the race trainer Mr C Waller advised that it was the intention to ride the gelding quietly in the early stages, as Cauthen's Power has previously exhibited some breathing issues and performs best when able to travel comfortably in the run with cover. He said at the gelding's most recent start at Randwick on 21 January 2017 some use had to be made of Cauthen's Power to race prominently and ultimately it led, which was further forward than anticipated. He added he continually rode Dalmatia Prince along in an effort to encourage the colt to work into the race, however it was a beaten horse early in the straight and compounded over the final stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Ruthless Agent – when questioned, rider B Shinn stated he had been under no specific instructions, however when the gelding began only fairly from its wide barrier, he elected to steady and shift in to obtain a position close to the running rail towards the rear of the field. He said, after being held up in the early part of the straight, near the 300m he shifted out and commenced to improve nicely behind the eventual winner Madame de Ban, but after making contact with Explosive Scene whilst he was shifting out his mount then became unbalanced and only finished off one-paced.

He said rounding the home turn he was endeavouring to shift to the outside of Royal Navy and on straightening positioned his mount to the outside of the heels of Royal Navy whilst tight to the inside of Salsonic (App. A Adkins). He added, however his mount continued to hang in and he was unable to maintain that position when Salsonic shifted in slightly and as a result he became awkwardly placed and checked across the heels of Royal Navy. He added Awoke then failed to run on thereafter. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth advised they will drop the filly back in grade for its next start. He added Awoke will undergo a veterinary examination, the results of which he will report to the Stewards. She undertook to have the gelding scoped and will report back to the Stewards the results of that examination and the condition of Australiana subsequent to the race.

J Doyle added that his mount was under heavy pressure prior to the home turn and he was concerned with the manner in which it weakened considerably inside the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr B Baker advised that Sewreel is not the most straightforward horse to train and he felt in hindsight it may not have appreciated the addition of blinkers in today's race. He added that the mare had galloped well on Tuesday and he was confident of its chances in today's event. Mr Baker said he believed that the principal reason for the mare tiring in the run was due to the manner in which it raced and he will remove the blinkers from Sewreel at its next start. Stewards considered the performance to be unacceptable and ruled that the mare must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.

He said the race was run in the early stages at a good tempo and his mount drifted back slightly worse than midfield when it became unbalanced in its action near the 800m. He added Zara Bay then settled satisfactorily and rounding the home turn he shifted to the outside of Sangiovese to obtain clear running. Trainer Mr D Payne confirmed that the instructions were to have the mare ridden close to the speed.
