  • Kinemar - from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners in the early stages.

In this incident Tower Of Song became badly unbalanced, resulting in its rider App. A Adkins also becoming significantly unbalanced in the saddle. App. B McDougall, rider of Strawberry Boy, whose shift was the principal reason for the contact, was advised that in similar circumstances he must stop riding and straighten his mounts sooner than he did on this occasion.
  • Strawberry Boy – when questioned regarding the performance, App. B McDougall App. B McDougall stated his instructions were to lead and to obtain a break on the field from the 600m. He added, whilst Strawberry Boy travelled reasonably well in the lead and as he approached the 600m he commenced to ride his mount along in order to comply with his instructions, however Strawberry Boy did not respond to his urgings and at this point was under pressure, before giving ground. App. McDougall said that when under pressure in the straight his mount proved difficult to ride out. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller advised Strawberry Boy would be freshened up prior to its next race start. Mr Waller undertook to report back on the progress of the gelding in the days subsequent.

A short distance later Ferniehirst was further restrained when racing in restricted room between Kooringal Star and Zakynthos Regrets (App. S Metcalfe), which shifted out away from the rail. App. Metcalfe was advised to exercise more care. Eye Of America, which was trailing Ferniehirst was steadied as a result.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying poor post-race recovery.

RACE 5: TAB Silver Sliipper Stakes (Group 2) 1100m

  • She Will Reign – when questioned regarding the She Will Reign racing back in the field, B Melham stated he had anticipated taking up a forward position as is usual. He added when the start was effected his mount jumped awkwardly and missed the start (three-quarters of a length) and consequently he rode the filly where comfortable, which resulted in it settling at the rear of the field. Inclined to shift out under pressure inside the final 200m.
  • Showtime – began awkwardly. Raced keen in the early and middle stages.
  • Lightz – approaching the first turn commenced to overrace and was restrained away from the heels of Lucky Louie.
  • Veranillo – Hung out making the home turn. Raced greenly in the straight and was inclined to lay out.
  • Khan – when questioned regarding the performance of the colt, rider K McEvoy stated from his wide draw he was caught wide in the early stages and as a consequence he elected to restrain and take up a position towards the rear of the field, rather than cover additional ground. He added, with the moderate early tempo, Kahn was inclined to race a little keenly in the run and when placed under pressure rounding the home turn found it difficult to make up ground when the tempo quickened. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities other than the colt had shifted its off-hind plate in running. Co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden advised that Kahn had pleased the stable in the lead up to today's race and in particular had impressed in a barrier trial at Gosford on 6 February 2017 when it won that trial. He said that since the trial the colt had continued to improve and was expected to run well today. Mr Snowden agreed with the explanations of K McEvoy and added that in his opinion Kahn this time in has shown that it is looking for additional ground and would derive benefit from today's performance. The post-race condition of Khan will be followed up with the stable in the days subsequent.

RACE 6: Schweppes Hobartville Stakes (Group 2) 1400m

  • Acatour – slow to begin.

  • Veladero - rider T Clark explained his mount travelled comfortably throughout the early and middle stages, but failed to run on when asked for an effort near the 200m and was only onepaced in the run to the line. He added Veladero, after beginning awkwardly and blundering, did not feel entirely confident during the run, but he felt that this was of little consequence as the colt was free in its action and he had no concerns in that regard. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying an occasional cough. Trainer Mr C Waller was advised a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, would be required prior to Veladero racing again.

RACE 7: Ranvet Millie Fox Stakes (Group 2) 1300m

Shortly after straightening Private Secretary was eased and directed back to the inside of the heels of Tsaritsa (T Angland), which shifted out. T Angland was advised to exercise more care. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider B Melham stated he had some concerns with the action of the mare when he placed it under pressure in the early part of the straight and for this reason he did not ride his mount out to the finish, which resulted in Private Secretary finishing distanced. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr G Hickman stated in his view the reason for today's poor performance was that Private Secretary had not handled today's soft track conditions. Stewards deemed the performance to be unacceptable and Mr Hickman was advised the mare must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next race start.
  • Single Gaze – for a short distance approaching the 200m rider K O'Hara dropped her right rein. Single Gaze then raced in restricted room for some distance near the 200m between Euro Angel and Daysee Doom.
  • I Am Zelady – rider T Clark stated that the mare failed to handle the Soft (6) track conditions and this was the principal reason for the disappointing performance. He added he was of the view that the mare has now performed below expectations at two runs since it was placed 2nd in the testing conditions at the Gold Coast on 14 January 2017 and this may also have contributed to its performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: Parramatta Cup (Listed) 1900m

  • Classic Uniform – began awkwardly, shifted in and hampered Sofin. Near the 100m brushed with Red Excitement due to both runners shifting ground.
  • Sofin – slow to begin.
  • Red Excitement - near the 100m brushed with Classic Uniform due to both runners shifting ground.
  • Religify – rider K McEvoy stated in his view the gelding is better suited when being able to dictate terms in front and today, with Classic Uniform holding the lead, he was obliged to race to that runner's outside. He said Religify did not feel comfortable on the soft track conditions and in addition may not have run out a strong 1900m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr L Prior advised Religify will be freshened up prior to its next race start. The post-race condition of the gelding will be followed up with the Waller stable.

  • Decision Time – raced wide without cover throughout the event. Shortly after straightening was bumped by Alucinari, which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of Hurrara to improve.
  • Aegean Sea – Rider J Collett stated that he was instructed to ride the mare just in behind the pace today with cover and his mount travelled reasonably behind the leaders. He said, after laying out making the home turn, Aegean Sea was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off and in his view is better suited when able to dictate terms. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Conners will be spoken to relative to the instructions issued today.
