Vet Notes

  • Under The Thumb (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be showing signs of tying up and displaying a poor postrace recovery. Trainer Ms S Grills was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.
  • Chandana (Race 4) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a speedy cut to the off-hind fetlock. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth stated, following its poor performance, the mare will now be transferred out of the stable.
  • Magic Of Dreams (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare bled for the first time. Trainer Mr K Lees was advised Magic Of Dreams would incur the mandatory three months bar from racing under AR53 and must trial or gallop 1000m prior to racing again. Mr Lees indicated the mare will now be retired.
  • Slow Pace (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which compounded in the straight and finished tailed out, revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr K Lees advised he will liaise with the connections regarding the racing future of the gelding.
  • The Bull (Race 9) – apost-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and respiratory distress. Trainer’s representative Mr N Paine advised Stewards that The Bull had pleased the stable in the lead up to today’s race and had galloped well on Thursday, 25 May 2017. He said that the stable was confident of a forward showing today and when the gelding returned to the mounting enclosure he noticed it had its tongue placed back, although was not making any respiratory noise. Stewards deemed the performance unsatisfactory and advised that The Bull must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next race start, as well as providing a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination.

Penalties & Fines

  • Mr P Messara, trainer of Lord Cecil was fined the sum of $50 under AR59A for failing to produce the Thoroughbred Identity Card for the gelding.
  • Ms M Moses, trainer of It’s Shamozzle was fined the sum of $50 under AR59A for failing to produce the Thoroughbred Identity Card for the gelding.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Seven News Plate 1400m

  • Icon Of Dubai – slow to begin. Passing the 150m was hampered slightly and carried inwards when Lord Cecil commenced to shift ground inwards.
  • Helioshpere – shortly after the start was steadied and shifted in behind runners to obtain cover.
  • African Rainbow – raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Sambro – raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Kementari – held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight and near the 300m shifted out to obtain clear running and in doing so made contact with Lord Cecil, which attempted to hold its line to the outside of Sambro, resulting in that runner becoming unbalanced and being carried wider on the track. Madame Moustache, which was following, was eased slightly as a consequence.
  • Cruze – hung out rounding the home turn and in doing so carried Arrestar wider on the track.
  • Allied Power – after improving into a narrow run between African Rainbow and Padraig near the 100m had to be steadied soon after when Padraig shifted in slightly. L Currie, rider of Padraig, was advised to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Arrestar – raced wide throughout without cover.
  • Easy Go Easy Win – when questioned regarding the gelding leading today, rider T Clark stated he was instructed to be positive from his barrier, but anticipated settling with cover behind the leaders. He said that his mount was one of the best to begin today and as a consequence he allowed it to stride forward. T Clark added, when caught wide early and with no prospect of being able to get in to find cover, he allowed Easy Go Easy Win to stride forward and lead rather than being caught wide. Trainer Mr J Sargent confirmed the nature of the instructions in that he anticipated Easy Go Easy Win to take up a handy position with cover. He said that the circumstances of the race, which included the gelding commencing well today, resulted in it racing more forward than he had anticipated.
  • Padraig – rider L Currie stated, whilst his intention was to ride the gelding quieter today, when it jumped awkwardly he was obliged to settle back at the rear of the field. He said, as he endeavoured to find cover, his mount was inclined to race keenly and was able to obtain cover approaching the 1000m. He added, after shifting out to improve on straightening, his mount initially responded, but in his opinion was disappointing in its finishing effort. He indicated to the Stewards that the only real explanation he could offer was that Padraig raced like a staying type looking for more ground. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Lord Cecil – trainer Mr P Messara was fined the sum of $50 under AR59A for failing to produce the Thoroughbred Identity Card for the gelding.

RACE 2: Tony Sleiman Memorial TAB Highway Handicap 1100m

  • Trustee – began awkwardly and lost ground (3L).
  • Suncraze – bumped shortly after the start by Snappy One, which shifted out slightly. Inclined to lay in as it endeavoured to obtain clear running near the 300m between Snappy One and Portatorio.
  • Nardoo – raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • L’elu – near the 600m was steadied away from the heels of Loves A Hassle. Near the 150m was steadied away from the heels of Under The Thumb when that runner commenced to give ground quickly. L’elu was then shifted to the inside of Under The Thumb at the 100m to find clear running.
  • Loves A Hassle – making the home turn approaching the 600m commenced to overrace and had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Clipper.
  • Portatorio – raced wide throughout without cover.
  • Somebody – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider M Cahill stated from his wide barrier he had been instructed to find cover on the mare and for this reason he elected to shift in in the early stages to comply with his instructions. He said his mount travelled comfortable in the run at the rear of the field, but was most disappointing in its failure to respond to his efforts in the straight and he could offer no excuse for today’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr A Ryan could offer no real excuse for today’s performance and indicated that the mare had pleased in its work leading up to today’s race and they had been satisfied with its trial at Dubbo on 14 May 2017 where it was successful on that occasion. Mr Ryan undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Somebody subsequent to the race.
  • Conniving – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Under The Thumb – raced wide throughout without cover. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be showing signs of tying up and displaying a poor postrace recovery. Trainer Ms S Grills was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.

RACE 3: EML Handicap 2000m

  • Monasterio – the gelding, which was fractious in the barriers, began very awkwardly and lost ground.
  • Mandalay Bay – slow to begin (3L). Had difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 200m.
  • Lord Kingsley – slow to begin and shortly after was steadied and shifted in behind runners to obtain cover. Held up rounding the home turn and was unable to obtain clear running until near the 250m.
  • Tumultuous – near the 250m made contact with Obscura due to both runners shifting ground, resulting in Tumultuous becoming unbalanced. Near the 150m was hampered when crowded between Obscura and Garbhan.
  • Obscura – passing the 200m was inconvenienced when briefly crowded by Prometheus (M Bell), which shifted in. M Bell was advised to exercise more care.
  • Lord Macau – rider J Parr stated the only explanation he could offer for today’s disappointing performance was that the gelding had come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr N Paine advised the stable would now reassess the future race plans for Lord Macau. Stewards deemed the performance unsatisfactory and ordered that the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards.
  • Garbhan – when questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding from the 600m, rider T Clark stated that, after following Cross Stitch into the event, he observed that runner was not improving as he would have liked and for this reason, when he observed Tumultuous shift off three deep, he elected to leave his position on the rail with a view to follow that runner. He said that when Tumultuous did not continue to improve as he would have expected, his mount then became held up to the inside of the heels of that runner and on the back of The Harrovian and as a consequence he was held up for a short distance making the home turn. T Clark added that when Sizzling Bullet was then able to improve into the position he had vacated and when Cross Stitch was then able to shift to the outside of the leader Lord Macau in order to improve. He further stated that, whilst his mount raced in restricted room for a short distance in the early part of the straight, it was nevertheless disappointing in its failure to finish the race off, particularly over the final 100m.

RACE 4: Mark Taylor Outreach Program Handicap 1600m

  • So Willie – the gelding was presented in the enclosure without its nose roll. Trainer’s representative Mr C Duckworth was reminded of his obligation to ensure that horses are presented with their approved gear. Shortly after the start was steadied and shifted in across behind runners to obtain cover.
  • It’s Shamozzle – slow to begin. Trainer Ms M Moses was fined the sum of $50 under AR59A for failing to produce the Thoroughbred Identity Card for the gelding.
  • Devil Hawk – slow to begin.
  • Salsonic – bumped shortly after the start by Chandana, which shifted in slightly. Near the 600m was steadied to avoid the heels of It’s A Shamozzle.
  • Chandana – when questioned regarding the performance of the mare, rider T Clark stated he intended taking up a handy position, however was caught wide in the early stages without cover. He said he was able to briefly obtain cover approaching the 600m, but Chandana was one-paced to the finish of the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a speedy cut to the off-hind fetlock. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth stated, following its poor performance, the mare will now be transferred out of the stable.
  • Encosta Line – rider C Lever stated his mount travelled well in the run and, although wide, obtained cover on the back of Chandana. He said leaving the 600m his mount hit a softer section of the track, blundered and from that point did not finish the race off and in his opinion lost confidence on the surface. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth undertook to report back to the Stewards in respect to the condition of the gelding in the days subsequent.

RACE 5: Wilson Asset Management Handicap 1400m

  • Nettoyer – slow to begin.
  • Seeblume – began awkwardly. Shortly after the start was shifted in behind runners to obtain cover. Hung out rounding the home turn and in so doing hampered Chadana, which was carried wider. Seeblume continued to hang when placed under pressure in the straight.
  • Fast Arli – began awkwardly. Overraced in the early and middle stages. Raced wide throughout without cover. When questioned regarding his riding, App. J Innes Jr stated he was instructed to take up a forward position preferably with cover. He said from barrier 3 he was able to obtain a position on the back of Can Dream one off in the early stages, whereby his mount was inclined to race keenly. He added when Can Dream shifted to the fence his mount had continued to race keenly, would not settle and soon after leaving the 1000m Can Dream shifted off, taking his mount three wide. App. Innes Jr said, whilst he contemplated going forward and racing outside the leader My True Love, he felt when he made such manoeuvre his mount would have been forced three wide. He said, whilst acknowledged he ultimately was taken to a point where he was three wide without, he felt this was his best option.
  • Chadana – overraced badly throughout the early and middle stages, refusing to settle.
  • Kawaikini – near the 300m had to be steadied when disappointed for clear running between Hittite and Siren’s Fury, which shifted out simultaneously as Kawaikini was being shifted out to obtain clear running. In this incident Kawaikini dipped and became unbalanced. A postrace veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Brulee – held up in the early part of the straight. Rider App. B McDougall stated his intention was to take up a midfield position on the filly, but from its inside draw, when it commenced well, he was able to settle more forward. He said in the run, when following the leader My True Love, his mount resented the kickback and in his opinion was not entirely comfortable on today’s soft track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Can Dream – laid in when placed under pressure over the final 250m.
  • Istria – rider M Dee stated the only excuse he could offer for today’s performance was his mount raced a little keen in the run and was left without a finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Ms C Mackay advised that the filly will now be spelled.
  • Siren’s Fury – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 6: The Sporting Chance Golfers Handicap 1200m

  • Heavenly Anna – began awkwardly. Rider App. B McDougall stated he was issued with no specific instructions as to where to settle in the race, but had anticipated taking up a much more forward position. He said his mount commenced awkwardly and consequently settle back in the field, however in the early and middle stages was reluctant to stretch out, inclined to lay in and in his opinion raced like it was field shy. App. McDougall further stated, after getting to the outside of runners soon after straightening, he was able to place his mount under full pressure, whereby Heavenly Anna finished off the race well. Trainer Mr K Parker stated, with the mare coming back in distance to 1200m, he was not able to take up a more forward position and also indicated that Heavenly Anna might be better suited by being able to have the services of a senior rider.
  • Yuma Desert – rider M Bell stated his instructions were to take up a forward position, but not necessarily hold the lead unless the tempo was only moderate. He said his mount commenced reasonably well and, after being crossed by Florelle near the 900m, his mount was then shifted back in the field when that runner steadied in front. M Bell added that, once he was out into clear running, soon after straightening Yuma Desert was somewhat disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Nudierudie – in the early stages got its head up when inclined to overrace.
  • Feelin The Love – overraced in the early and middle stages.
  • In Times Of War – raced wide without cover throughout.
  • Magic Of Dreams – rider R Thompson stated his mount may not have appreciated racing in amongst horses and, whilst not making any appreciable ground in the straight, near the 200m he had to steady away from the heels of Nudierudie when that runner shifted out at that point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare bled for the first time. Trainer Mr K Lees was advised Magic Of Dreams would incur the mandatory three months bar from racing under AR53 and must trial or gallop 1000m prior to racing again. Mr Lees indicated the mare will now be retired.

RACE 7: Fujitsu Air Conditioning McKell Cup (Listed) 2400m

  • Allergic – slow to begin. Then eased slightly shortly after when tightened for room between Big Blue and Broadside, both of which shifted ground.
  • Slow Pace – passing the 2300m lost its off-side winker. Rider R Thompson could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which compounded in the straight and finished tailed out, revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr K Lees advised he will liaise with the connections regarding the racing future of the gelding.
  • Broadside – held up making the home turn. On straightening shifted to the outside of Beyond Thankful to obtain clear running and made contact with Richard Of Yorke, resulting in Richard Of Yorke becoming unbalanced.
  • Danjeu – making the home turn was bumped by Richard Of Yorke and became unbalanced. When questioned regarding his riding near the 700m and the reason he shifted to the outside of Richard Of Yorke, B Spriggs stated, after travelling with cover throughout the early and middle stages near the 800m, his mount hit a softer section of the track and became slightly unbalanced. He said as a consequence he elected to shift off to try and improve his position in the event and at the same time he was aware that Broadside was positioned back to the inside of Richard Of Yorke and his manoeuvre was in an attempt to prevent Broadside from shifting back. B Spriggs added, when Danjeu did not improve to the outside of Richard Of Yorke sufficiently to prevent Broadside from shifting out, he was then taken wider making the home turn and was obliged to race without cover from the 700m, where he shifted out. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Multitude – App. J Innes Jr stated ….. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Handicap 1100m

  • Machinegun Jubs – began awkwardly.
  • Badajoz – slow to begin. Raced ungenerously when placed in restricted room to the inside of Boss Lane approaching the 800m.
  • Upscale – made contact with Big Money on jumping. Rider T Clark stated he anticipated taking up a more forward position on the mare, however it did not show its customary early speed. He said, whilst Upscale was not entirely comfortable with today’s track conditions, aided with an inside run in the home straight the mare finished off reasonably well.
  • Big Money – made contact with Upscale on jumping.
  • Aomen – shortly after the start was steadied and shifted in behind runners to obtain cover.
  • Kudero – laid in when placed under pressure over the final 200m.
  • The Monstar – passing the 100m was steadied when tightened for room between Badajoz and Kudero, which laid in under pressure. Near the 50m was steadied when crowded by Kudero (J Collett), which shifted in. J Collett was advised to exercise more care.
  • Le Cordon Blue – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Hieroglyphics – rider M Cahill stated the mare was stirred up before the event and, whilst it has some established wet track form, he felt the soft track conditions did not suit. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr E Cummings advised the Stewards that Hieroglyphics had pleased leading into today’s race, but in light of today’s performance would now be spelled.

RACE 9: One Solutions Handicap 1400m

  • Level Eight – on the home turn was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Master Agar, shifted out and made the turn awkwardly. When questioned, rider K Jennings stated his instructions were to take up a midfield position preferably with cover. He said, although his mount commenced well, he did not ride it forward in order to comply with his instructions and consequently was caught wide in the early stages whilst endeavouring to find a position. K Jennings added when The Bull went forward he had hoped a number of runners positioned to his inside would improve with that runner, however when those runners did not improve, he was obliged to race four wide without cover throughout the early and middle stages of the event.
  • Reine Happy – began awkwardly. Shortly after straightening n placed in restricted room between Wayanka and The Bull (J Parr), which shifted out. J Parr was reprimanded and advised to ensure there is sufficient racing room for runners to his outside with cover. Reine Happy then raced in restricted room for some distance thereafter.
  • Ruthless Agent – slow to begin and then shortly after was steadied when crowded between Coolcraft and Imperator Augustus, both of which shifted ground.
  • High Mist – slow to begin. Pulled hard in the middle stages. Briefly held up n the early part of the straight.
  • Magical Stance – overraced in the early and middle stages. Raced wide throughout without cover. Laid in under pressure over the final 200m and as a consequence its rider changed his whip from his left hand to his right hand.
  • Orcym Sam – held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and near the 300m was shifted to the ouside of Level Eight to find clear running. Near the 100m raced up on the heels of Magical Stance and was steadied.
  • The Bull – rider J Parr stated that his mount travelled well in the lead, but soon after straightening, when placed under full pressure, failed to respond to his riding and weakened noticeably. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and respiratory distress. Trainer’s representative Mr N Paine advised Stewards that The Bull had pleased the stable in the lead up to today’s race and had galloped well on Thursday, 25 May 2017.   • Wayanka – rider T Clark stated, with the solid early tempo, he was obliged to make use of his mount to hold his position in the early stages. He said on today’s soft track conditions Wayanka had to work reasonably hard to maintain its position and when placed under pressure in the straight did not respond, whereby the early effort told. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth stated the gelding had pleased the stable since its last start and concurred with the views of T Clark. Mr Duckworth undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Wayanka subsequent to the event.
