Vet Notes

  • Cadogan (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a speedy cut to the off-hind leg.
  • Prometheus (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its near-hind plate in running.
  • Nothing Box (Race 8) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding bled for the first time during the running of this event and will now incur the mandatory three month embargo from racing under AR53A).
  • Bratislava (Race 9) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery, respiratory distress and was coughing. Trainer’s representative Mr P Reid stated Bratislava had pleased the stable leading into today’s race and agreed with the assessment of T Clark. Mr Reid was advised a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, would be required prior to the gelding being permitted to race again.

Penalties & Fines

  • B El-Issa, rider of Can’t Skate was fined the sum of $200 under AR137A(4)(c) for using the whip on a horse when out of contention (applied the whip on 10 occasions). B El-Issa was reprimanded under AR83(a) in respect to his conduct when present in a Stewards’ inquiry.
  • J Adams, rider of The Monstar was fined the sum of $200 under AR137(c) for making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post.
  • Mr K Lees, trainer of Star Reflection was fined the sum of $100 under LR35(2) for failing to declare J Ford as the rider of the mare in this event by the prescribed time.

Summary of Races

RACE 1 – Club Redfern Plate 1000m

  • Champagne Cuddles – after being slow to begin, was crowded for room between Exceed The Night and Lipizzan, which shifted out abruptly. In the incident Lipizzan was bumped on the hindquarter and became unbalanced.
  • Exceed The Night – inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages. App. R King reported her mount failed to handle today’s heavy track conditions.
  • Pymble – near the 300m rider C Lever accidentally dropped his whip.
  • Lipizzan – hung out in the early part of the straight when placed under pressure and proved difficult to ride out. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 2 – Anderson Handicap 1100m

  • Vienna Romance – slow to begin. Near the 150m had to be steadied away from the heels of the weakening Best Guess and was then shifted to the outside of that runner to be able to continue to be ridden out to the line. Rider J Ford stated that, although the filly does have established wet track form, it failed to handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Cadogan – slow to begin. Rider J Collett stated his mount failed to handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a speedy cut to the off-hind leg.
  • Best Guess – slow to begin. Rider B Avdulla stated his mount failed to handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Geneteau – slow to begin. Steadied and taken back in across runners shortly after the start.
  • Difficult to Get – raced keenly in the middle stages.
  • In Times Of War – approaching the 500m was inconvenienced when Memes shifted out slightly.

RACE 3 – TAB Highway Handicap 1000m

  • Nictock – slow to begin.
  • Ocean Grand – slow to begin and then was crowded for room between Mr Pumblechook and Clipper, both of which shifted ground.
  • I’m Imogen – slow to muster speed despite being ridden along for a short distance after the start.
  • Can’t Skate – rider B El-Issa was fined the sum of $200 under AR137A(4)(c) for using the whip on a horse when out of contention (applied the whip on 10 occasions). B El-Issa was reprimanded under AR83(a) in respect to his conduct when present in a Stewards’ inquiry.

RACE 4 – Leading The Way Stayers cup 3200m

  • Soviet Courage – slow to begin. Rider J Collett stated that his mount travelled well in the run, but in his opinion the disappointing performance was due to the fact that on today’s heavy track the gelding did not run out a strong 3200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • He’s Dreamin’ – slow to begin.
  • Diamond Made – began awkwardly and then was crowded between My Psychiatrist and Plot Twist, which shifted out. Rider A Banks was reprimanded under AR137A(4)(c) for using the whip on a horse when out of contention (applied the whip on 3 occasions).
  • Broadside – near the 150m was inconvenienced when Richard Of Yorke (B Avdulla) shifted out. B Avdulla was advised to stop riding and straighten his mounts when they shift ground when insufficiently clear.

RACE 5 – Heard Agency Handicap 2000m

  • Mandalay Bay – slow to begin (2L).
  • Nettoyer – slow to begin. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
  • Lord Kingsley – slow to begin.
  • So Splendid – overraced in the middle stages.
  • Vaucluse Bay – rider A Hyeronimus stated that the gelding travelled comfortably in behind the leaders in a slowly run event. He said when the tempo increased near the 600m his mount could not pick up on the heavy track conditions and this was the only excuse he could offer for today’s disappointing run. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Prometheus – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its near-hind plate in running.

RACE 6 – Pemulwuy Handicap 1400m

  • Dagny – the near-side barrier occupied by Dagny rebounded as the start was effected and made contact with the mare, resulting in it being slightly slow to begin. The matter was brought to the attention of the ATC staff for attention prior to the next race.
  • Tennessee Hussy – began awkwardly. Inclined to overrace when caught wide without cover throughout the event.
  • Labdien – rider J Collett stated that his mount travelled well in behind the lead, but when it hit a particularly heavy section near the 600m, as the tempo increased, the mare lost its action and could not make up ground on today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth stated that the mare performed below expectations and, although it has some established heavy track form, nonetheless he endorsed the views expressed by J Collet that Labdien was not suited by today’s track conditions. He undertook to report back to the Stewards if there is anything amiss with the mare in the days subsequent.

RACE 7 –AHC June Stakes (Listed) 1100m

  • Grunderzeit – as B Avdulla was overweight, J Ford was substituted as the rider of the gelding. In the circumstances no action was taken. After being slow to begin, was hampered shortly after by The Monstar, which shifted out.
  • Old Man Sam – slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Wouldnt It Be Nice – slow to begin.
  • Mr Manhattan – rider T Clark stated his mount was unsuited by racing back in the field and then found it difficult to make up ground, particularly given the circumstances where the race was only run at a moderate tempo in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Inz‘n’Out – when questioned, App. J Innes Jr his instructions were to endeavour to ride his mount off the lead today. He added at its last start at Randwick on 27 May 2017 Inz‘n’Out raced in the lead after being caught wide in the early stages. He said on that occasion his instructions had been similar to today in that he was to position himself in behind the pace, but the circumstances of that race resulted in the gelding being positioned more forward.
  • The Monstar – rider J Adams was fined the sum of $200 under AR137(c) for making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post.

RACE 8 – Souths Juniors Handicap 2000m

  • Imperial Aviator – slow to begin. Rider R Hutchings stated his mount was racing first up over 2000m today and after initially responding to his riding on the home turn, its condition gave out under pressure in the straight. He added on pulling up he noticed the horse had its tongue back over the bit and he recommended that the connections experiment with gear on Imperial Aviator. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • More Energy – slow to begin. Near the 600m blundered and became unbalanced. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
  • El Novio – slow to begin. Rider J Parr stated his mount missed the start slightly, which resulted in the gelding settling a little further back than intended and in addition resulting in his mount having to travel along the rail. He said in his view El Novio being forced to race on the inferior going on the rails was the only explanation he could offer for today’s performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of El Novio subsequent to the race.
  • Dowdstown Charlie – slow to begin. Rider B Avdulla stated his mount on today’s very heavy surface was under pressure from as far out as the 600m and the only excuse he could offer was that the gelding did not get through today’s testing conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mrs K Waugh stated that the gelding has mixed its form on similar tracks and has performed below expectations on rain affected tracks in the past. She undertook to report back to the Stewards if there is anything amiss with Dowdstown Charlie in the days subsequent.
  • Nothing Box – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding bled for the first time during the running of this event and will now incur the mandatory three month embargo from racing under AR53A).
  • Curragh – App. N Heywood was reminded of his obligation wherever possible to ride his mounts out fully to the finish of the race.

RACE 9 – Leith Group Handicap 1200m

  • Star Reflection – trainer Mr K Lees was fined the sum of $100 under LR35(2) for failing to declare J Ford as the rider of the mare in this event by the prescribed time.
  • Stella Ombra – began awkwardly.
  • Ever So Natural - crowded shortly after the start between Star Reflection and Oscar’s Choice. App. D Panya was reprimanded under AR137A(4)(c) for using the whip on a horse when out of contention (applied the whip on 5 occasions).
  • Brigadoon Rise – near the 800m became unbalanced when racing in restricted room between Oscar’s Choice and Knit ‘N’ Purl, which shifted out slightly.
  • Conarchie – near the 800m the gelding which was inclined to overrace, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Gold Ambition (App. B McDougall), which shifted in when not clear. App. McDougall was reprimanded. In assessing penalty, Stewards found the racing manners of Conarchie, which refused to settle in the middle stages and got its head up, had contributed to the interference. App. A Adkins stated his mount travelled on the inside where he felt the ground was inferior. He said, whilst Conarchie does have some wet track form, he was of the opinion the gelding did not handle today’s extremely heavy conditions.. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Painte – App. J Innes Jr could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance of the gelding and indicated that it does have established wet track form. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Pride was asked to report back on the post-race condition of Painte.
  • Bratislava – rider T Clark stated is mount was unsuited by racing on the inside of the track, which in his view was inferior. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery, respiratory distress and was coughing. Trainer’s representative Mr P Reid stated Bratislava had pleased the stable leading into today’s race and agreed with the assessment of T Clark. Mr Reid was advised a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, would be required prior to the gelding being permitted to race again.
