  • Omar (Race 1) – a postrace veterinary examination revealed the colt was slow to recover. Trainer Mr G Ryan confirmed the instructions issued. He said however, having regard to the slow tempo in the early stages, in hindsight it would have been a preferable option for the rider to have allowed Omar to lead. Mr Ryan undertook to report back on the condition of Omar and he did indicate he will now give the colt a let up.

Mr Snowden was advised George Patton would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next start. Stewards will follow up with the post-race condition of George Patton.

  • Mr J Attard, trainer of Reiby The Red was fined the sum of $50 under AR140A for failing to present the gelding with visors, which is part of its approved gear. When a set of visors could not be obtained without causing undue delay, the Stewards permitted Reiby The Red to race in blinkers.
  • C O'Brien, rider of The Lion pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that on straightening he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Loves A Hassle, which was checked and lost its rightful running. Summary of Races

RACE 1: TAB Plate 1100m

  • Pembroke Castle – slow to begin and shortly after the start was steadied when crowded between Omar and Venom, which shifted in. Near the 200m was bumped by Bobbio on the hindquarter and became unbalanced. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt lost its near-hind plate in running.
  • Sizzling Belle – on jumping was hampered when bumped by Haunting Spirit, which shifted out.
  • Bobbio – jumped awkwardly. Raced wide and without cover throughout the event.
  • Venom – approaching the 900m had to be steadied when crowded between Pembroke Castle and Bobbio (J Winks), which shifted in when not fully clear. J Winks was advised to exercise more care.
  • Osorno – laid in under pressure in the early part of the straight and raced greenly. Near the 100m had some difficulty obtaining clear running when attempting a narrow run between Sizzling Belle and Omar, which was giving ground.
  • Omar – App. J Innes Jr stated his instructions were to find cover on the colt and accordingly he allowed Haunting Spirit and Sizzling Belle to cross his mount in the early stages with a view to taking up a position behind those runners. He added, after he endeavoured to restrain his mount in the early stages to obtain cover, Omar raced fiercely and refused to settle and as a consequence was awkward on the heels of Sizzling Belle for some distance in the middle stages. App. Innes further stated that prior to straightening he shifted to the outside of Sizzling Belle to improve into the race and, after initially responding in the early part of the straight, when placed under pressure with the whip near the 200m Omar commenced to lay in and give ground. He said in his view the slow tempo of the event did not suit the colt. A postrace veterinary examination revealed the colt was slow to recover. Trainer Mr G Ryan confirmed the instructions issued. He said however, having regard to the slow tempo in the early stages, in hindsight it would have been a preferable option for the rider to have allowed Omar to lead. He added the manner in which Omar raced he believed was the principal reason for it performing below expectation. Mr Ryan undertook to report back on the condition of Omar and he did indicate he will now give the colt a let up.

RACE 2: Wilkes Quality 1100m

  • Lightz – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Inclined to race keenly in the middle stages.
  • Single Bullet – approaching the 200m was inconvenienced slightly when Siege Of Quebec, which was inclined to lay out, shifted out. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt lost its near-hind plate in running, which became entangled in its tail in the region of its hock.
  • Siege Of Quebec – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt lost its near-hind and off-fore plates in running.
  • Kennedy – when questioned regarding the colt leading today, rider G Schofield stated his only instruction was to be positive on the colt in the early stages. He said when his mount commenced well and T Angland, rider of Single Bullet, did not show any real intent to control the race, he elected to ride forward and cross Single Bullet. He added when Siege Of Quebec was not the best to begin and was ridden along, he elected to make use of his mount and cross Siege Of Quebec, as he felt this would have given Kennedy the best chance to finish in advance of that runner. Trainer Mr J Cummings confirmed the instructions issued to G Schofield and advised there was no specific intention for Kennedy to lead today.

RACE 3: Owners Forum @ Royal Randwick Handicap 1500m

  • Reiby The Red – trainer Mr J Attard was fined the sum of $50 under AR140A for failing to present the gelding with visors, which is part of its approved gear. • The Getaway – hung out making the home turn and in the straight.
  • Prometheus – on straightening became momentarily unbalanced when bumped by Eusebio. When questioned regarding her riding in the middle stages and as to whether there was an opportunity to hold a position one off behind Hunter Jack, W Costin stated that throughout the middle stages her mount did not travel on the bridle and she was obliged to make some use of it to hold her position behind that runner. She said nearing the 700m, whilst she was aware Eusebio was commencing to shift off, as her mount was not travelling well enough, she was unable to prevent that runner shifting off, which resulted in her mount racing wide from the 700m.
  • Hunter Jack – rider A Hyeronimus accidentally dropped his whip near the 150m.
  • Eusebio – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 4: TAB Highway Handicap 1100m

  • Lofty's Menu - prior to the declaration of weight, the Stewards identified from the inquiry room that rider App. L Magorrian had struck his mount on ten occasions, including on four consecutive occasions prior to the 100m. When Stewards could not be satisfied that Lofty's Menu had gained an advantage that resulted in it finishing in 2nd placing in the race, in accordance with AR168(2) they therefore declined to exercise their powers under AR137A(9) and did not proceed with a formal objection. Jumped awkwardly. Laid out when placed under pressure in the straight. App. L Magorrian was fined the sum of $600 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on ten occasions prior to the 100m (5 more than permitted). He said that when his mount began particularly well today and with the perceived lack of early tempo, he elected to make use of the good start and cross to the lead. He added that Miss Ballantine travelled well in front, but was somewhat disappointing in its failure to respond to his riding in the straight.

RACE 7: Carrington Stakes (Listed) 1400m

  • Beauty Flame – trainer Ms M O'Gorman was reminded of her obligation to notify Stewards of any change of tactics no later than 30 minutes before the start of the race.
  • George Patton – on jumping was bumped by Supreme Effort and became unbalanced. Near the 1100m George Patton, which was inclined to overrace and lay in, had to be steadied when crowded between Supreme Effort and Kuro, which was also steadied when taken in by Prized Icon (G Schofield), which shifted in when not clear. G Schofield was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. In this incident Supreme Effort was also crowded. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider B Avdulla stated the horse overraced in the early stages, particularly when racing tight to the inside of Kuro. He said that leaving the 900m he was able to have his mount settle and, after improving three wide on straightening, whilst his mount initially responded to his riding, it gave ground over the final 200m. He added in his view the racing manners of the horse had contributed to its disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse lost it's off-fore plate in running. Co-trainer Mr Paul Snowden concurred with the view of B Avdulla. He stated that George Patton had pleased leading into today and indicated it would derive benefit from today's run and race day experience. Stewards deemed the performance of the horse to be unacceptable (starting $2.70 favourite). Mr Snowden was advised George Patton would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next start. Stewards will follow up with the post-race condition of George Patton.

  • Endless Drama – laid in when placed under pressure in the straight.
  • Supreme Effort – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: ATC Owners Benefit Card Handicap 1800m

  • Nothing Box – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider App. L Magorrian stated his mount hung out throughout the event and under pressure in the straight he had some concerns with its action and consequently did not fully test it over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr C Duckworth, representing trainer Mr C Waller, was advised that Nothing Box would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next race start.
  • Mull Over – under pressure in the straight was inclined to shift ground and proved difficult to ride out. When questioned regarding the mare being ridden more forward, rider C Brown stated his instructions were to ride with cover, but when caught wide in the early stages he had to make use of his mount to go forward and race outside the lead rather than being caught wide in the early stages.
  • Red Dubawi – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Atlantic Fox – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider J Ford stated his mount was stirred up pre-race and sweated up noticeably. He said in the race the gelding pulled hard, refused to settle and did not finish his race off. He added Atlantic Fox raced like it had come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr C Duckworth, representing trainer Mr C Waller, undertook to report back on the future race plans for the gelding. The matter was adjourned pending that advice from the stable.

RACE 9: tab.com.au Sprint 1100m

  • Last Witness – slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • My Maher – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Rider B Avdulla stated from his draw he elected to obtain cover on the mare and particularly in the early stages was inclined to overrace. He said under pressure in the straight My Maher failed to respond to his riding and shortened stride noticeably over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr M Smith stated the only explanation he could offer for the disappointing performance was that the mare may not have fully stretched out on today's Good (3) track. Stewards deemed the performance of My Maher to be unacceptable and ruled that it must trial to their satisfaction before its next race start.
  • Anna's Joy – near the 800m shifted in and made contact with the running rail.
  • Knight Templar – raced ungenerously throughout and for some distance near the 800m shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of Pedway.

A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr G Ryan advised that the gelding had pleased the stable leading into today's race, but agreed with the assessment of T Clark and advised Pedway would be spelled. Mr Ryan undertook to report back on the condition of the gelding subsequent to the race.
