Summary of Races

RACE 1: Catanach's Handicap 1900m

  • Multifacets – 30 minutes prior to the running of this event trainer Mr C Waller notified the Stewards the gelding would be ridden in a midfield position. Ten minutes before the running of the event jockey G Schofield approached the Stewards and indicated his intention was to settle in a handy position from its wide draw, as he felt the gelding was not able to make up sufficient ground in the straight should it be ridden in its normal racing pattern. Announcements were made to this effect. Subsequent to the race G Schofield confirmed his intention was to be in a handy position, as he did not feel he would have the necessary speed to cross Nat King Cu and Tamarack, which were drawn to his inside. He said when both these runners did not go forward and Cyrus Rocks, drawn to his outside, went forward, Multifacets was able to use that horse to gain a more forward position than he had intended. Trainer Mr C Waller advised Stewards that, whilst his intention initially had been to take up a midfield position, as notified to the Stewards 30 minutes before the start of the race, he agreed with G Schofield's assessment that the gelding, if possible, could take up a more forward position. Mr Waller added that, other than the gelding's last start at Canterbury on 2 March 2018, the tactic adopted by G Schofield was similar to its previous racing pattern. Stewards advised Mr Waller that, whilst appreciating his transparency in respect to notifying changes of tactics, in this circumstance he would be required, under the provisions of AR135A, to notify changes in tactics no later than 30 minutes prior to the race starting.
  • Tamarack – leaving the enclosure the gelding made contact when it caught its off-side hip. The gelding was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer on arrival at the barriers and passed fit to start. Overraced in the middle stages. Soon after straightening was hampered when crowded by Multifacets, which shifted out and away from Cyrus Rocks.
  • Lord Kingsley – stood flat-footed as the start was effected and lost ground (2L). A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • All Too Soon – after being slow to begin, from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners. When questioned regarding the filly racing back in the field, rider T Angland stated his intention was to be more forward, but in the early stages he assessed that it was going to be caught wide if he elected to hold a forward position and for this reason he committed to follow Marman with a view to that runner shifting to the fence. He said when Marman held its position one off he was unable to take up a more forward position and for this reason settled further back than he had intended. He said from the 800m he elected to go forward and improve, but when Marman did not improve he was forced to shift to that runner's outside from the 700m, whereby he placed his mount under pressure, which resulted in it having to sustain a long run from that point.
  • Zourkhan – laid in under pressure in the straight and proved difficult to ride out.
  • Sizzling Bullet – making the turn near the 1600m, the gelding, which was inclined to race keenly, was steadied from the heels of Multifacets. Rider C Williams stated the gelding enjoyed a comfortable run in behind the leaders, but was unable to quicken when placed under pressure in the straight. He said, although inconvenienced when Tamarack shifted out in the early part of the straight, his mount was still disappointing and made an abnormal respiratory noise when being ridden out. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Nat King Cu – when questioned regarding the gelding being ridden quieter, M Dee stated that, whilst he intended to take up a forward position, his instructions were not to make too much use of his mount to lead. He said when Multifacets and Cyrus Rocks showed intent to go forward from wide barriers, he allowed Nat King Cu to settle in a handy position behind the leaders. Trainer Mr J Coyle stated the instructions he issued today to be forward were consistent with the gelding's previous starts and in his view, with the blinkers off today, relaxed and was not as sharp in the early stages.

  • The Abyss – S Baster, rider of Setsuna, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 800m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Into The Abyss, which was checked and lost its running. • Dothraki - Stewards considered an objection lodged by T Angland, rider of 2nd placegetter Dothraki against Sprightly Lass being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages. After considering all the evidence, Stewards found that Sprightly Lass shifted out inside the 150m after Dothraki had established a position to its outside, resulting in Dothraki having to be steadied when placed close to the heels of Sprightly Lass near the 50m. Stewards were satisfied that, had this interference not occurred, Dothraki would have finished in advance of Sprightly Lass and the objection was upheld. He said, after travelling at the rear of the field soon after straightening, he commenced to ride his mount forward, but was required to shift to the outside of runners in order to find clear ground. He added that nearing the 200m he contemplated improving to the inside of Akasaki, however when that runner shifted in slightly, he elected to continue to shift out, whereby he secured clear running near the 200m. C Williams further stated that near the 100m he felt the run of the mare had come to an end as it did not finish the race off over the final 100m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be 1/5 lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer Mr C Waller was advised that veterinary clearance would be required prior to the colt racing again.

He added the mare was also disadvantaged by having to be steadied from the heels of Raiment at the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller concurred with the views expressed by K McEvoy and undertook to report back to the Stewards if there is anything amiss with Egg Tart subsequent to the race.

Rider M Walker stated that, whilst the mare travelled satisfactorily in the early stages, after being checked near the 600m it failed to travel from that point and did not finish the race off. He said in his opinion Raiment would be better suited by being brought back in distance, as it did not seem to run out a strong 1500m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Cummings expressed a similar view to M Walker and advised it is now the intention to bring the mare back in distance in future.
