Stewards' Report - Royal Randwick

Published: 10 Jan 2015

RACE 1: TAB Place Multi Handicap 1400m

  • Testarhythm – trainer Mr B Smith was fined the sum of $400 under LR35(1) and (2) for having failed to declare a rider for the gelding by 12 noon on Wednesday, 7 January 2015, after having been directed by the Stewards to do so, as there were suitable metropolitan standard riders available. P King was notified as the rider of Testarhythm on Friday, 9 January 2015 at 10.12am. Lost near fore-plate near the 150m.
  • She’s Clean – laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
  • Eigelstein – rider T Angland dropped his whip at the 75m.
  • Boomwaa – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be showing signs of heat stress.

RACE 2: Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1000m

  • Upstart – began awkwardly and bumped Entrancing. Was held up on straightening and had to be directed back to the inside of the heels of Counterattack.
  • Entrancing – began awkwardly and bumped Upstart. On straightening had to be steadied off the heels of Right Advice (B Shinn), which shifted out to obtain clear running to the outside of Stravigo. B Shinn was told to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.
  • Right Advice – jumped awkwardly. Was inclined to lay out in the early stages and made contact with Tay Tay Taylor.
  • Tay Tay Taylor – At the request of App. S Clenton, the gelding was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer behind the barrier and passed fit to start. Hampered shortly after the start. Raced intractably and hung out rounding the home turn, before finishing distant. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-foreleg and displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr T Wilson advised the gelding would be spelled. Stewards ruled that Tay Tay Taylor must trial to their satisfaction prior to racing.
  • Maternal – hampered shortly after the start. At the 700 Maternal, which was racing greenly, clipped the heels of Tay Tay Taylor when being restrained to race on the back of that gelding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.

RACE 3: Drummond Golf Handicap 1150m

  • Inz’n’out – jumped awkwardly and shifted in.
  • Adjective - slow to begin and hampered shortly afterwards. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be mildly lame in the near-foreleg. Mrs L Singlton, representing trainer Mr S Singleton, advised that the gelding had pleased the stable leading into the race. Mrs Singleton was asked to provide a veterinary clearance prior to Adjective racing again.
  • Kaepernick – taken in at the start. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the gelding and the riding tactics adopted, B Shinn re-affirmed that, in finishing 7th at Rosehill on 20 December 2014, Kaepernick had overraced and then did not finished the race off. He added that he had no specific instructions where to position the gelding into today’s race, other than he was to endeavour to get Kaepernick to relax. B Shinn said the gelding raced a little keenly early and, when caught three wide, he had to ease further back than intended in order to get cover. Prior to the race the Stewards had confirmed with co-trainer Mr M Hawkes that, with Kaepernick, dropping back from 1400m to 1150m today, there would be no specific instructions to B Shinn, other than to have the gelding where comfortable.
  • Meursault – near the 900m had to be restrained off the heels of Inz’n’out (App. T Marshall), which shifted in. App. Marshall was told to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.

RACE 4: J.B. (Barry) Maher Memorial Handicap 1400m

  • Chestnut Road jumped awkwardly.
  • Queenian – buffeted on jumping between Chestnut Road and Timeless Prince.
  • Timeless Prince – became unbalanced on jumping.
  • Tarangower – on straightening was bumped by Chestnut Road, which shifted out to improve around the heels of Queenian. Rider B Shinn stated he had to make a little use of his mount to cross early, but the gelding was most disappointing in that it was a beaten horse at the entrance to the straight. Trainer Mr P Messara stated that Tarangower had pleased in its work leading up to the race and had been sharpened up with a jump-out on Monday, 5 January 2015. He added that he was pleased with the manner in which B Shinn had ridden the gelding, as it is best suited when able to stride. He undertook to report the results of a vet check subsequent to the race. The Stewards clarified with Mr Messara that the taping of both front fetlocks did not require a notification of bandages as a gear change. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had aggravated an old laceration to the off-elbow.

RACE 5: TAB Rewards Handicap 1300m

  • Miss Ready – knuckled over in jumping.
  • Holy Delusions – held up and unable to be tested at any stage in the straight.
  • Frill Seeking – overraced in the middle stages and refused to settle. Passing the 200m ran in away from Miss Ready, was awkward on the heels of Medusa’s Miss and could not be fully tested from that point. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 6: Declaration Of War @ Coolmore Plate 1600m

  • Diametric – on return to scale an objection was lodged by B Shinn, rider of 2nd placegetter Diametric, against The Alfonso being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 200m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned, including P King, rider of Laidback Larry, the Stewards made the following findings: (1) In respect of the incident approaching the 200m the Stewards found that Diametric was disappointed for a run between Kurtley and Laidback Larry that was principally due to Kurtley (App. S Clenton) shifting out slightly and also, to a lesser degree, Laidback Larry, firstly, shifting in away from The Alfonso and then being crowded by The Alfonso. (2) In respect to the grounds between approaching the 100m and approaching the 50m the Stewards were satisfied that a narrow run developed between Kurtley and The Alfonso near the 120m, but that Diametric was crowded for some 50m when taken in by The Alfonso, which shifted in under pressure. Bearing in mind the margin of a half head, based solely on the grounds in the second incident, the Stewards upheld the objection and the placings were amended to read:
  • 1st Diametric
  • 2nd The Alfonso
  • 3rd Sense Of Occasion
  • In respect to Diametric being crowded between the 120m and the 70m, T Angland, rider of The Alfonso, was told that he should have stopped riding earlier and straightened his mount to prevent it shifting in.
  • Drago – dwelt on jumping away.
  • Laidback Larry – checked and lost its rightful running and Diametric was hampered when The Alfonso (T Angland) shifted in when not clear. T Angland pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding. T Angland’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Thursday, 15 January 2015 and to expire on Monday, 26 January 2015, on which day he may ride. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a deep wound to the outside of the near-fore cannon below the knee.
  • Sense Of Occasion – App. B Loy was reprimanded under AR137A(4)(b) in that over the concluding stages he used his whip in an action that raised it above shoulder height.
  • Kurtley – App. S Clenton reported that, whilst her instructions were to ride the gelding off pace, it overraced and she was obliged to allow it to run along in the lead.

RACE 7: James Boag’s Premium Handicap 1000m

  • Agent – reared on jumping and then shifted in, subsequently losing ground. Overraced in the early and middle stages.
  • Quell – raced fiercely in the lead in the early and middle stages and subsequently weakened in the straight.
  • Thermal Current – hampered when Inside Job (App. B Loy) shifted in when not fully clear. App. Loy was told to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.
  • Inside Job - App. B Loy was reprimanded under AR137A(4)(b) in that over the concluding stages he used his whip in an action that raised it above shoulder height.
  • Big Bonanza – An inquiry into the gelding, which was having its first start since June 2014 and its first start in his stable, being presented in the enclosure without blinkers and a tongue tie was adjourned so that the Stewards could make inquiries with the Trainers’ Service Centre to ascertain whether trainer Mr J Pride had effected a gear change on Wednesday, 7 January 2015. Acting on the assurance of Mr Pride that he had effected a gear change, Big Bonanza was allowed to race without blinkers and tongue tie and suitable announcements were made. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: TAB.COM.AU Handicap 1800m

  • Barge And Charge was fractious in the barriers. App. K Jennings pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that near the 200m he shifted out when not clear of Barge And Charge, resulting in Barge And Charge losing its rightful running and being checked. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account that App. Jennings had not been suspended for over two years, his guilty plea and his inexperience as an apprentice. As a result, App. Jennings’ permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 14 January 2015 and to expire on Saturday, 17 January 2015, on which day he may ride.
  • Sasenkile – jumped the crossing at the 1600m.
  • Diamondsinthenight – held up making the home turn and in the early part of the straight. App. B Loy was fined $200 under AR137A(4)(b) in that over the concluding stages he used his whip in an action that raised it above shoulder height. In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account this was the third occasion today he had offended this rule.
  • Jitterbug – inside the 100m taken out.
  • Nadacheva – was hampered inside the 100m when Jitterbug was taken out by Unique.
  • Emerald City – rider K McEvoy could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance, other than that the gelding travelled comfortably in behind the leader, but failed to quicken when the tempo of the race increased. A post-race veterinary examination revealed did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Vandyke indicated that Emerald City had pleased in its work and could offer no excuse in respect to the performance. The matter was adjourned so Mr Vandyke can report back on a full vet check on the gelding subsequent to the race.
