Summary of Races

RACE 1: The Schweppervescence (Group 3) 1400m

  • Sweet Ava – as T Angland was overweight, permission was granted for A Adkins to be substituted as the rider of the filly. In issuing no penalty against T Angland, Stewards accepted that subsequent to a fall he sustained at the Gosford meeting on Thursday, 29 March 2018, he was unable to sufficiently lose the weight required to make the weight on Sweet Ava. When questioned, A Adkins stated that he was able to take up a position outside the lead in the early stages, but failed to run out a strong 1400m. He said the filly would be better suited back in distance where it is able to obtain cover. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Ringerdingding – on jumping was bumped by Aristocratic Miss, which shifted in. Raced wide and without cover throughout. Rider M Zahra (placed 6th, beaten short head for 5th) pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137(b) in that he failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race. M Zahra was fined the sum of $500.

After obtaining a narrow run between Legislation and Nasaayim shortly after straightening, was then briefly crowded when Nasaayim shifted out. • Akkadian – had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight. Near the 100m Spin, which was inclined to lay in and shift ground, ran in abruptly, resulting in Ringerdingding shifting in abruptly away from that runner despite the efforts of its rider. As a consequence Sweet Ava was checked to avoid the heels of Ringerdingding, causing Akkadian to also have to be checked. Stewards were satisfied that the racing manners of Spin and Ringerdingding were the cause of the interference and the Stewards were also satisfied that T Clark, rider of Spin, and M Zahra, rider of Ringerdingding, had reacted as soon as their mounts commenced to shift ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed speedy cuts to the near-foreleg.
  • Osorno – when questioned, rider C Williams stated his mount was able to travel comfortably in the lead in a slowly run race. At a subsequent inquiry C Reith pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(i) and (ii) in that he used the whip on 11 occasions prior to the 100m (6 more than permitted), inclusive of three consecutive strikes. He added in his opinion the gelding's run ended near the 150m and it would derive fitness benefit from today's performance. • Almandin – Stewards opened in inquiry into the tactics adopted on Almandin, which raced in a more forward position today compared to its last start in the Australian Cup on 10 March 2018. Rider K McEvoy stated that hs instructions were to take up a position handy to the favourite Gailo Chop so as to ensure he was in a competitive position. He said accordingly he elected, after beginning on terms, to be positive from the gates, where he was able to race outside Gailo Chop in the early stages. Trainer Mr L Howley confirmed the instructions were to ensure that Almandin was able to take up a competitive position behind or near Gailo Chop if the horse began satisfactorily. He also confirmed that at its most recent start in the Australian Cup, as notified to the Stewards on that day, his instructions were to ride the gelding back in the field to offset the wide barrier. Mr Howley pleaded guilty to a charge under AR135A for failing to notify the Stewards that Almandin would be ridden in a different manner to which it was ridden at its last start. Mr Payne was asked to provide a veterinary clearance prior to the filly racing again.

He said he could offer no real excuse for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr T McEvoy concurred with the views of L Currie that the blinkers being removed may have been the principal reason why the filly raced disappointingly. In finding B Avdulla guilty, Stewards were satisfied that he had shifted in and initially crowded Dancers, but could not be satisfied the shift had then caused the horse to lose its rightful running. In the circumstances B Avdulla was reprimanded. In this incident Miss Admiration, which was following, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Dancers.
