Summary of Races

RACE 1: Widden Kindergarten Stakes (Group 3) 1100m

  • Enbihaar – on Friday 6 April 2018 Stewards received notification from the Hayes/Dabernig stable that blood pathology performed on the filly on that day had shown muscle enzyme levels which had returned back to normal.. Enbihaar was examined by Racing NSW Senior Official Veterinarian Dr C Suann at the stables and was passed fit to start. From its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider C Parish stated that the filly was inclined to race keenly in the run and also hung out, particularly in the middle stages and making the home turn. He said in the straight, when placed under pressure Enbihaar initially responded to his riding, but over the final 300m failed to respond and was most disappointing. He added the filly had come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr D Hayes advised that he had been pleased with the filly's condition in the lead up to today's race and stated in his view it was unsuited by racing on the wrong lead leg and also had come to the end of its preparation. Mr Hayes advised Stewards that Enbihaar would now be spelled and he undertook to report back to the Stewards if there is anything amiss with the filly in the days subsequent.
  • Vendome – began awkwardly and lost ground (3L). Commenced to race keenly in the middle stages and approaching the 600m was steadied from the heels of Stunts. In the straight continued to race greenly and proved difficult to ride out.
  • Mandalong Emperor – began awkwardly and despite being ridden along did not muster speed, got its head on the side and shifted out joining the course proper nearing the 800m and then continued to hang out badly until the home turn. The racing manners of Mandalong Emperor were deemed to be unacceptable and trainer Mr G Nickson was advised that the colt would be required to barrier trial before being permitted to race again. Mr Nickson confirmed Mandalong Emperor would now be spelled.
  • Lean Mean Machine – slow to begin. On at least two occasions approaching the 800m Stunts and Lean Mean Machine made contact as Lean Mean Machine endeavoured to obtain a position closer to the running rail. Raced keenly in the middle stages and near the 700m shifted out and was steadied from the heels of Legend Of Condor. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt lost its near-fore plate in running.
  • Stunts – hampered shortly after the start when Mandalong Emperor shifted out. Stunts was then shifted back in behind runners to obtain cover.
  • Munich – near the 700m was steadied from the heels of Ennis Hill (S Baster), which shifted in when not quite clear. S Baster was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground.

  • Assimilate – began awkwardly and then from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Making the first turn, when inclined to race ungenerously, shifted out when being steadied by its rider, resulting in Assimilate losing ground when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Holy Snow. Charlie Chap, which was following, was steadied as a consequence. Rider T Angland stated that, although his mount was inconvenienced on the first turn, he felt it was still somewhat disappointing. He added the only excuse he could offer for today's performance was the colt was not suited by the slow early tempo. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr Paul Snowden stated Assimilate was unsuited by the slow early tempo, which made it difficult to make up ground. He said it was not the stable's intention to drop the colt back in distance where it could be better suited by a more genuine tempo. Mr Snowden undertook to report back if there is anything amiss with Assimilate in the days subsequent.
  • Think Straight – Z Purton, rider of Icon Of Dubai, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a)) in that leaving the 1400m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Think Straight, which when inclined to race keenly, was checked to avoid the heels of Icon Of Dubai and lost its rightful running. In this incident Think Straight continued to race fiercely and refused to settle for some distance. Z Purton's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 9 April 2018 and to expire on Wednesday, 18 April 2018, on which day he may ride.
  • Icon Of Dubai – inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages.
  • Beau Geste – near the 300m bumped with Holy Snow as that runner shifted to the outside of Villermont to improve. From this point Beau Geste was then inclined to lay out under pressure over the concluding stages. Over the concluding stages had to be steadied when crowded between Icon Of Dubai and Holy Snow (B Shinn), which shifted out whilst being ridden along. B Shinn was reprimanded under AR137(a) and advised he must stop riding and straighten his mounts when they commence to shift ground.

RACE 4: Newhaven Park Country Championships Final (Special Condition 1400m

  • Pumpkin Pie – reared and became badly cast on the back of the barrier and as such was a late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 1.24pm. R King added that in her op the performance of Domed was not overly disappointing bearing in mind the run the horse endured.. A postrace veterinary examination revealed the mare to have speedy cuts to the off-hind pastern.

RACE 6: Inglis Sires' (Group 1) 1400m

  • El Dorado Dreaming - prior to the declaration of correct weight, the Stewards identified from the inquiry room that rider D Lane had struck his mount on 9 occasions prior to the 100m (inclusive of four successful strikes), including four consecutive. When Stewards could not be satisfied that El Dorado Dreaming had gained an advantage that resulted in it winning the race, in accordance with AR168(2) they therefore declined to exercise their powers under AR137A(9) and did not proceed with a formal objection. At a subsequent inquiry D Lane pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(i) and (ii) in that he used the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m (4 more than permitted), including four consecutive strikes. D Lane's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 15 April 2018 and to expire on Sunday, 22 April 2018, on which day he may ride. Oohood was then shifted to the outside of Encryption, but was again disappointed for clear running between Encryption and Spin. After being badly held up Oohood (Z Purton) was then directed to the inside of Bondi and in doing so made contact with Tchaikovsky, resulting in Tchaikovsky being taken in onto Ringerdingding, which in turn made contact with Seabrook. • Long Leaf – over the concluding stages was inconvenienced when being steadied to avoid the heels of El Dorado Dreaming, which shifted in slightly.

RACE 7: Harrolds Australian Derby (Group 1) 2400m

  • Ace High – Stewards considered an objection lodged by T Angland (Ace High), rider of 2nd placegetter, against Levendi being declared with winner, alleging interference over the final 100m. After considering all the evidence, the Stewards found that over the final 100m Levendi had an inclination to shift in. Stewards further found that inside the 50m Levendi and Ace High brushed on two occasions, predominantly due to Levendi shifting in and Ace High also shifting out marginally. Stewards also found that while T Angland changed his whip form his left to right hand, Stewards were satisfied this was done prior to Levendi shifting in towards Ace High. As Stewards were not comfortably satisfied that had these incidents not occurred that Ace High would not have finished in advance of Levendi, the objection was dismissed.
  • Main Stage – shifted its off-hind plate in the tie-up stalls, which necessitated it being replated. The gelding then underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start. After being slow to begin, was hampered when Tangled shifted out. Raced wide and without cover until nearing the 1500m.
  • The Lord Mayor – reared as the start was effected and lost ground. Near the 1800m Furore, which was inclined to race keenly, was steadied away from the heels of Main Stage as it contested a position one off the fence with Astoria. In this incident Mission Hill, which was following and racing keenly, was checked away from the heels of Furore and ran out. When being corrected by its rider Mission Hill shifted in, as it was continuing to be restrained, resulting in The Lord Mayor striking the heels of Mission Hill, blundering and almost falling, resulting in C Brown almost being dislodged. After considering all the evidence, Stewards found that the racing manners of Mission Hill and Furore had significantly contributed to the if and Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that any rider had displayed any carelessness in the incident. In this incident C Brown suffered an injury to his chest region, which resulted in The Lord Mayor not being ridden in a competitive manner for the remainder of the event. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Salsamor – slow to begin and then from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Making the first turn near the 2000m ran out and away from Mission Hill when that runner shifted out.
  • Pissaro – slow to begin and then from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start.

  • Tangled – soon after the start was steadied when crowded by Main Stage, which shifted in and away from Capital Gain. Raced keenly in the middle stages and near the 2000m shifted out and hampered The Lord Mayor.
  • Condor - overraced in the early stages.
  • Weather With You – near the 2100m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Ace High, which was taken in by Vin De Dance. Mongolianconqueror, which was following and inclined to overrace, was checked to avoid the heels of Weather With You.

  • Furore – raced wide and without cover throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be sore behind. Trainer Mr K Lees advised Furore would now be spelled. On this assurance no action was taken.
  • Astoria – soon after straightening had to be checked when disappointed for a run to the inside of Capital Gain, which was crowded by Tangled and Condor. Astoria was then held up for clear running for some distance thereafter.
  • Capital Gain – leaving the 400m had to be steadied when crowded by Tangled, which was taken in by Condor (C Newitt), which shifted in. C Newitt was reprimanded and advised he must stop riding and straighten his mounts when they commence to shift ground. When questioned, regarding Capital Gain leading, rider B Melham stated he was issued with similar instructions at the gelding's most recent start in the Rosehill Guineas on 24 March 2018 to be in a prominent position. He said in the Rosehill Guineas Capital Gain missed the start and settled further back than intended. He added, whilst today he intended to take up a more forward position, he had expected more pace from the outside runners and when this did not eventuate his mount assumed the lead without really being pressured. B Melham further stated that Capital Gain overraced badly in the lead, refused to settle and was left without a finishing effort as a consequence.
  • Belfast – raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: Darley T J Smith Stakes (Group 1) 1200m

  • Global Glamour – under pressure in the straight hung in. Raced wide and without cover throughout.
  • Takedown – near the 200m was steadied to avoid the heels of In Her Time, which shifted in.
  • In Her Time – when questioned regarding his riding in the early stages and as to the reason the mare settled back in the field, rider D Lane stated his instructions were to take up a handy position in the race outside of Brave Smash. He said throughout the early stages his mount did not travel strongly and for this reason he elected to allow The Mission to cross his mount with a view to racing behind that runner. He added when Brave Smash then shifted to the fence this resulted in In Her Time racing further back than he had intended. Stewards advised D Lane that in the early stages he should have made more effort to hold a position to the outside of Brave Smash rather than allowing The Mission to cross his mount. D Lane further stated that making the home turn, after following Brave Smash, he contemplated shifting to that runner's outside, but when Fell Swoop commenced to give ground he elected to continue to follow Brave Smash through. He added that as a consequence he could not test In Her Time when held up on the heels of Brave Smash until near the 150m, whereby he shifted to the inside of that runner and In Her Time found the line strongly.

RACE 9: The Star Doncaster Mile (Group 1) 1600m

He said when Invincible Gem shifted in slightly and Tom Melbourne was taken out by Arbeitsam he had to check his mount when disappointed for clear running. He added he then shifted back to the inside of Tom Melbourne, but again was disappointed for clear running between Tom Melbourne and Arbeitsam when Tom Melbourne shifted back in slightly. B Avdulla further stated he was then held up for clear running over the final 150m of the event and could not test his mount to the finish. A post-race veterinary examination revealed multiple lacerations to the off-fore cannon.
  • Endless Drama – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse lost its off-hind plate in running.
  • Arbeitsam – Stewards opened an inquiry into the reason M Dee, rider of the gelding, returned to scale 1 kilogram overweight. It was established, after weighing out M Dee had consumed some fluids as he was dehydrated and co-trainer Mr A Bott had changed the girth, which was heavier and had contributed to the overweight. M Dee also stated, after weighing out, he was requested by the trainer to wear spurs during the event. After considering all matters, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that any one individual action would have resulted in M Dee returning to scale overweight and in those circumstances no action was taken. However, Mr Bott was advised that he must seek the permission of the Stewards prior to changing any gear which a rider has weight out with.

When Stewards could not be satisfied that Pretty To Sea had gained an advantage that resulted in it being placed 2nd the race, in accordance with AR168(2) they therefore declined to exercise their powers under AR137A(9) and did not proceed with a formal objection. At a subsequent inquiry M Dee pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(i) and (ii) in that he used the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m (4 more than permitted), including two consecutive.
