Vet Notes

  • Mornington (Race 3) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be 2/5 lame and to have been galloped on its near hind leg. Stable representative C Duckworth was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Mornington racing again.
  • Filomena’s Grace (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed Filomena's Grace to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer J Pride was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare racing again.
  • Shiraz (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed Shiraz to be 2/5 lame in near fore leg. Trainer K Waugh was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.
  • Fanning (Race 9) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Living Turf Handicap 1200m

  • Silent Explorer – Hung out when placed under pressure over the final 400m and shifted out considerably. Close to the winning post, Silent Explorer which was continuing to hang out became awkwardly placed on the heels of Dio D'oro, had to be eased and consequently was not ridden out to the post. Stewards considered the racing manners of Silent Explorer to be unacceptable and advised trainer Mr D Payne that before the gelding is permitted to race again Silent Explorer would need to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial where by the gelding must be placed under pressure over the final stages. Trainer Mr D Payne advised that Silent Explorer would be now be spelled.
  • Beidi – For some distance approaching the 200m raced tight to the inside of King's Trust which was shifting in. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • King’s Trust – When questioned regarding the performance of King's Trust T Clark stated that the colt may not have been suited by being up in grade today on a heavy track during its first preparation. Co-Trainer Peter Snowden stated that the only excuse he could offer for the colt's performance today apart from being on a heavy track was that King's Trust endured a testing performance in the home straight along the inside which in his view is the less preferable section of the track. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Knight Arrow – Consideration was given to an objection lodged by J Ford the rider of fourth placegetter Knight Arrow against Silent Explorer (J Parr) being declared third on the grounds of alleged interference in the home straight. On the evidence it was established that entering the straight Silent Explorer which commenced to hang out, shifted out carrying Knight Arrow and Dio D'Oro wider. Knight Arrow was then carried out by Silent Explorer until the 200m whereby it had to be steadied when tightened for room between Dio D'Oro and Silent Explorer and again near the 150m Knight Arrow was tightened for room and eased, then was shifted out around the heels of Dio D'Oro when Silent Explorer continued to shift out. Having regard to the beaten margin of 1L the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred that Knight Arrow would have finished ahead of Silent Explorer they therefore dismissed the objection. In all the circumstances Stewards reprimanded J Parr and whilst they acknowledged that the racing manners of the gelding contributed significantly to these incidents, nonetheless J Parr was advised that in similar circumstances he should have made a greater effort than he did on this occasion to ensure his mount did not shift ground to the degree it did.
  • Unguarded – From its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. For a short distance approaching the 1000m got its head up when steadied to obtain cover. Hung out making the turn from the 600m. For some distance approaching the 300m was carried wider by Marmaris and again approaching the 50m was inconvenienced and shifted in to avoid the heels of Marmaris which continued to shift out when not quite clear.

RACE 2: Dad And Daves Turf Handicap 1200m

  • Easy Eddie – Slow to begin. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance App J Van Overmeire stated that the gelding travelled satisfactorily but when placed under pressure prior to the home turn failed to respond and in his view Easy Eddie was not suited on today's heavy surface. Trainer J Pride stated that his preferred option would have been to see Easy Eddie shift to the outside early in straight however having regard to the manner in which it weakened over the final 100m he was of the view that Easy Eddie was not suited by the track conditions today. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stewards will follow up on the post-race condition of the gelding in the days subsequent.
  • Revenire – Close to the winning post the colt could not be ridden out when racing tight between Lisdoonvarna and You Make Me Smile both of which shifted ground.
  • Lisdoonvarna – When questioned rider P Wells stated that he had been asked to ride Lisdoonvarna prominently today as is usual. He said however the filly only began fairly and as result he was positioned further back in the field than intended. He added that whilst he was able to make up satisfactory ground behind Pierina approaching the 600m the circumstances at the start disadvantaged the filly today.
  • Haussmann – Began awkwardly and from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners shortly after the start.
  • Pierina – Stewards permitted G Schofield to ride the filly half a kilogram over its allotted weight of 53.5kg.
  • You Make Me Smile – Throughout the early and middle stages raced fiercely and got its head up on a number of occasions and proved difficult to settle and as result the colt ultimately led the event.
  • Island Missile – When questioned rider C Reith explained that his focus had been to shift to the outside of Lisdoonvarna after the 300m and for this reason approaching the 250m he lost momentum when manoeuvring to the outside of Lisdoonvarna's heels. He said that as he was intent to make his run to the outside, he did not observe during the relevant time that there was an opportunity for him to continue improving directly behind Revenire. Stewards advised C Reith that his explanation would be reported however he should avail himself of advantageous positions as they present themselves.

RACE 3: Evergreen Turf Handicap 2400m

  • Follow Suit – Slow to begin. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance J Ford stated that after settling at the rear of the field as anticipated his mount did not travel at any stage of the event. He said Follow Suit came under pressure from the 700m and after leaving the 600m he became concerned with the action of the gelding which hung out in the straight. He said for this reason he did not properly test Follow Suit in the run to the line. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. The Stewards deemed the performance to be unacceptable and advised stable representative Mr C Duckworth that the gelding must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and a veterinary clearance must be produced prior to Follow Suit trailing again.
  • Mornington – When questioned rider G Schofield stated that throughout the early and middle stages the gelding raced keenly and proved difficult to settle. He said that as Mornington continued to race keenly he elected near the 1200m to restrain the gelding, in a continued effort to have it relax, and whilst doing so Mornington lost ground. As a result, Only Tiger became awkwardly placed on the heels of Mornington. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be 2/5 lame and to have been galloped on its near hind leg. Stable representative C Duckworth was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Mornington racing again.
  • Spooky Wooky – Approaching the home turn Spooky Wooky was slightly tightened for room between Solo Mission and Mornington which commended to give ground and shift out slightly.

RACE 4: Southern Cross Turf Highway 1200m

  • My Blue Jeans – Was crowded on jumping between Go The Gantry and Budawang both of which shifted ground. Raced keenly for some distance after the 900m and got its head up when being continually restrained from the heels of Go The Gantry.
  • Budawang – Stewards permitted R Agnew to ride the gelding one kilogram over its allotted weight of 53kg.
  • Dead Reckoning – From the outside barrier was shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Travelled keenly throughout the middle stages.

RACE 5: Elite Sand & Soil Mile 1600m

  • Sons Of John – Approaching and passing the 50m Sons Of John raced in restricted room between Karavali and Dark Eyes which was shifting out slightly.
  • Mighty Lucky – Pulled hard in the early and middle stages.
  • Dark Eyes – Approaching the 200m rider J Parr accidently had his whip knocked out of his grasp by the whip of B McDougall (Special Missile).
  • Karavali – From its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners shortly after the start.
  • Beijing Board – When questioned App R King stated that although the gelding has been successful on a heavy track, nonetheless the manner of which the horse weakened when under pressure over the final 300m gave her the impression that the gelding was not entirely comfortable on today's surface. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 6: SCG Trust Handicap 1400m

  • Princess Posh – G Schofield (Medaille) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in when not clear of Princess Posh near the 1000m which had to be steadied.
  • Medaille – When questioned rider G Schofield stated that the mare only began fairly and although he travelled wide and without cover he felt that this was of little consequence on today's surface. He said he was of the view though having regard to the manner it weakened over the final 200m that Medaille was unsuited by the heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Filomena’s Grace – Near the 250m the mare which was commencing to give ground was steadied when momentarily tightened between Star Reflection and Philosophy both of which shifted slightly. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the mare App Q Krogh explained that his mount never travelled comfortably in the lead. He said after the 300m his mount got its head on the side and commenced to lay out and began to give ground quickly from this point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Filomena's Grace to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer J Pride was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare racing again.
  • Sepoy Acheva – Leaving the 100m, Sepoy Acheva raced in restricted room inside Medaille which was shifting in slightly.

RACE 7: Elite Haulage Handicap 1200m

  • Jungle Edge – Near the 100m was inconvenienced when I Thought So shifted out momentarily.
  • Shiraz – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance T Angland stated that he was encouraged by the manner in which the gelding worked during its preliminary and thereafter he was confident of Shiraz's chances in today's race. He added that although Shiraz travelled satisfactorily during the event it came under pressure early in the straight and he had some concerns with the action of Shiraz. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Shiraz to be 2/5 lame in near fore leg. Trainer K Waugh was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.
  • Aide Memoire – A post-race veterinary examination of Aide Memoire which travelled wide and without cover throughout revealed no abnormalities.
  • Crafty Cop – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Handfast – From the outside barrier was shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

RACE 8: HI Quality Turf Handicap 1400m

  • Francesco – From its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • High Mist – Slow to begin.
  • Cyrus Rock – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Voilier – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Tenorino – From its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Approaching the 1000m Tenorino got its head on the side when being eased away from the heels of Fleeting Stryke.
  • Travancore – Slow to begin. After being crossed by Cyrus Rocks near the 1000m Travencore commenced to race keenly. Had difficultly obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight and when being shifted to the inside of Impavido near the 300m to obtain clear running bumped with Cyrus Rocks.
  • Fleeting Stryke – Approaching the 200m was shifted to the inside of Voilier to continue into clear running.

RACE 9: Turf Drain Australia Sprint 1000m

  • Bandipur – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance T Angland stated that he was asked to ride the colt conservatively from its wide barrier, He said that he was confident of the gelding's chances leaving the 600m but after immediately shifting to the outside of Removal just prior to straightening Bandipur did not quicken despite his efforts and was only one paced in the home straight. He added that whilst Bandipur had some excuses today namely the heavy track and racing clockwise on the first occasion nonetheless in his opinion the colt performed well below expectations. Mr D Beadman endorsed the views expressed by T Angland. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stewards will follow-up the post-race condition of the colt in the days subsequent
  • She Knows – Was checked on jumping when crowded between Fanning and Timing which shifted out.
  • Fanning – Was bumped on the hindquarters on jumping away and became unbalanced. T Clark reported the gelding which was resuming today, and racing in a position behind the leaders, would derive fitness benefit from today's performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be slow to recover.
  • Grand Condor – Hung out approaching and rounding the home turn.
  • Timing – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. App. R King expressed some concern in regards to the mare's action. Although a post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities, Trainer Mr J Pride was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Timing racing again.
