Vet Notes

  • Mister Smartee (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a small laceration above the near fore fetlock.
  • Lisdoonvarna (Race 3) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be slow to recover. Stewards will follow up on the post-race condition in the days subsequent.
  • Upscale (Race 4) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have an abrasion to the near hind bumper.
  • Sayed (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities other than there were healing wounds to the off-hind fetlock and over the near fore fetlock.
  • Doukhan (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed that Doukhan was found to have blood present in its near side nostril due to a minor laceration.
  • His Majesty (Race 9) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils for the second occasion. Trainer K Waugh was advised that His Majesty would now incur a lifetime ban from racing under AR53A.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Half Yearly Membership Handicap 1400m

  • Pohutukawa – Began only fairly and was shifted in behind runners shortly after the start.

RACE 2: TAB Highway Handicap 1400m

  • Tim’s Principal – Blundered shortly after the start. Near the 1000m was shifted out when awkwardly placed on the heels of Mister Smartee. Tim's Principal raced keenly for a short distance thereafter.
  • Bocelli – Bumped on jumping by Gitan. Passing the 100m was inconvenienced when Realing continued to shift in.
  • Gitan – Bumped with Bocelli on jumping and shifted in making contact with Club Town and became unbalanced. Raced wide and without cover throughout. Commenced to lay in for some distance after the 300m. Approaching the 150m was accidently struck across the nose by the whip of rider C Brown (Bocelli). Approaching the 100m was tightened between Cliff and Bocelli, which after intentionally being taken in, then shifted in and away from Realing.
  • Mister Smartee – On jumping shifted out and made contact with Club Town and as a result became unbalanced. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a small laceration above the near fore fetlock.
  • Gronky – Passing the 400m was inconvenienced when Tim's Principal shifted in slightly.  
  • Club Town – As App B McDougall was indisposed Stewards permitted App Q Krough to be substituted as the rider of the gelding. Began awkwardly, resulting in its rider becoming unbalanced and then shortly after the start was crowded between Mister Smartee and Gitan both of which shifted ground.

RACE 3: #Theraces Handicap 1500m

  • Gresham – Began awkwardly, made contact with Lisdoonvarna, became unbalanced and lost ground.
  • Lisdoonvarna – Bumped by Gresham on jumping. When questioned rider P Wells stated that he had to make considerable use of the filly in the early stages, which was racing over 1500m for the first time, to offset the wide draw. He added that he was ultimately able to take up a position outside Radiant Choice approaching the 1000m whereby his mount travelled keenly throughout the middle stages. He believed that the early work he was obligated to undertake coupled with the filly backing up from last week, were factors that contributed to Lisdoonvarna performing well below expectations. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be slow to recover. Stewards will follow up on the post-race condition in the days subsequent..
  • Nicci’s Gold – Slow to begin.
  • Asterius – Slow to begin (2L).
  • Sparky Lad – Slow to begin. Passing the 350m was crowded between Radiant Choice and Curdled which shifted out. Approaching the 200m was again tightened between Radiant Choice and Curdled which shifted out slightly. As the Stewards were satisfied that on both occasions J Van Overmeire the rider of Curdled corrected his mount at the appropriate time, no action was taken.
  • Catmosphere – Raced keenly throughout the early and middle stages and got its head up on a number of occasions when its rider was endeavouring to steady his mount. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Pride Of Darci – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Radiant Choice – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

RACE 4: Book Spring Now Sprint 1100m

  • Upscale – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have an abrasion to the near hind bumper.
  • Difficult To Get – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance rider T Angland stated that he had to urge his mount in the early stages to cross Aimalac Millie. He added that when he endeavoured to steady Difficult To Get after the 900m, the mare did not relax for some distance thereafter when racing upsides Brook Magic. T Angland believed the principal reasons for Difficult To Get weakening over the final 100m was a consequence of the manner in which it raced during the mid-section of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Aimalac Millie – Rider A Hyeronimus was spoken to regarding raising his whip arm above shoulder height.
  • Gala Moshea – Slow to begin and then after being crowded between Upscale and Difficult To Get was shifted in behind runners in the early stages

RACE 5: TAB Rewards Handicap 1800m

  • Celtic Love – For some distance after the 200m when commencing to close the race off well had difficulty obtaining clear running and was held up between So Splendid and Lady Evelyn.
  • Walk The Streets – From its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
  • Regine – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Royal Stamp – Was a late withdrawal at 1.48pm when the mare refused to proceed to the barriers. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Royal Stamp be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made prior to 1.48pm to be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1st) Tornado Gal less 6c win and 5c place. 2nd) Sweet Victory less 7c place. 3rd) So Splendid less 7c place. Trainer Mr M Conners was advised that Royal Stamp would be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.
  • Firebird Flyer – Travelled keenly when racing wide and without cover in the early and middle stages and as a result K O'Hara allowed her mount to take up a position outside the leader La Chica Bella near the 900m.
  • I Am Awesome – Began awkwardly and lost ground (3L). Was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Rider A Adkins advised that for the major part of the race the mare made an abnormal respiratory noise. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr K Lees undertook to provide the results of an endoscopic examination prior to I Am Awesome being permitted to race again.
  •  Lady Evelyn – After beginning well was allowed by its rider App J Van Overmeire to maintain the lead in the early stages.
  • Ticked – Slow to begin and then was shifted in behind runners in the early stages.

RACE 6: Winter Cup 2400m

  • Sayed – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Sayed App S Weatherley stated that after taking up a position outside the leader Harper's Choice his mount, despite his efforts, would not relax and raced keenly throughout the early and middle stages. He added that he attributed the gelding weakening in the straight principally due to not being able to obtain cover whereby his mount over-raced. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities other than there were healing wounds to the off-hind fetlock and over the near fore fetlock.
  • Harper’s Choice – Stewards permitted B Avdulla to ride the gelding half a kilogram over its allotted weight of 53kg.
  • Doukhan – Prior to the start being affected got its head down and consequently lost ground (3L). A post-race veterinary examination revealed that Doukhan was found to have blood present in its near side nostril due to a minor laceration.

 RACE 7: Civic Stakes 1350m

  • Jungle Edge – Approaching the winning post was steadied when placed in restricted room when Flow shifted in marginally.
  • Red Excitement – When questioned T Clark explained that his mount was unsuited by being unable to travel for the major part of the race due to the genuine tempo. He added that whilst Red Excitement has wet track form this has been over races of longer distance whereby Red Excitement has had an opportunity to race at a more even tempo. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Gold Symphony – From the outside barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
  • Mister Sea Wolf – Had some difficulty obtaining clear running until approaching the 300m.
  • Danish Twist – Leaving the 1000m was steadied when tightened between Jungle Edge which got its head on the side and laid out and Dreamforce which shifted in slightly. Red Excitement which was following was eased as a consequence. When questioned rider A Adkins explained that he was asked to be positive in the early stages. He added that after beginning well from an outside barrier his mount was caught wide and without cover and in the circumstances, he allowed the mare to improve and take up a position close to the running rail after the 1000m which resulted in Danish Twist racing prominently contrary to his expectations.
  • Slightly Sweet – Raced wide and without cover the for major part of the race. Near the 1000m was steadied to avoid the heels of Danish Twist which shifted in when not quite clear.
  • Faraway Town – Over the concluding stages laid in and proved difficult to ride out. A postrace veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Sir Bacchus – After being slow to begin was shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
  • New Universe – Near the 1100m commenced to race keenly, got its head up, shifted out and was restrained from the heels of Flow, Faraway Town which was following was steadied as a consequence. When questioned K O'Hara stated that whilst the gelding has some wet track form she believed that New Universe was not suited to today's track conditions and she attributed this to the gelding failing to close the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Manolo Blahniq – Stewards permitted C Reith to ride the gelding one kilogram over its allotted weight of 53kg.

RACE 8: ATC Owner Benefits Card Handicap 1500m

The start of the race was delayed as a replacement set of barriers had to be deployed at the starting point.

  • The Avenger – Bounded on jumping and lost ground. Over the final 200m laid in under pressure.
  • Feelin The Love – Began only fairly. Near the 1300m was hampered when Trafalgar commenced to race ungenerously and shifted out. Raqeeq which was following was checked as a consequence. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Braces – A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Cosmic Engine – Raced wide and without cover until approaching the 900m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Prometheus – Near the 250m was bumped and become unbalanced when Braces shifted out slightly. When questioned rider W Costin stated that her mount, from the 600m came under pressure when the tempo quickened and Prometheus did not respond to her efforts to encourage the gelding to improve. She added that she was of the view Prometheus would be better suited on a firmer surface and in an event that is run at a more even tempo. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Trafalgar – Raced ungenerously and approaching the 1100m become awkwardly placed on the heels of Braces, had to be steadied and shifted out resulting in Feelin The Love having to be checked and More Moet which was following having to be steadied, Trafalgar then raced keenly for some distance thereafter.
  • Invicta – Began awkwardly.
  • Mapmaker – Near the 150m C Brown (Braces) was struck on the right arm with the whip of A Hyeronimus (Mapmaker) during which A Hyreronimus dropped his whip.
  • Raqeeq – Slow to begin Approaching the 1100m Raqeeq had to be checked for some distance when racing close to the heels of More Moet.
  • Valentino Rossa – Over the concluding stages shifted out and was steadied after becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of Dylan's Romance, as a result Valentino Rossa was not ridden out fully to the winning post.

RACE 9: Sydney’s West App Handicap 1100m

  • His Majesty – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils for the second occasion. Trainer K Waugh was advised that His Majesty would now incur a lifetime ban from racing under AR53A.
  • Isorich – Raced wide and without cover throughout
  • Suspense – From the outside barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
  • Perizada – Was crowded shortly after the start between Tango Rain and Easy Eddie which both shifted ground. Tango Rain when being steadied near the 900m to allow Chauffeur to cross it lost ground resulting in Perizda which was following having to be checked.
  • Samantha – Near the 1000m was steadied when tightened between Redouble and His Majesty which after initially being taken in by Akasaki then got its head on the side and shifted in slightly away from that runner. Approaching the 600m got its head up when being restrained from the heels of Redouble. Near the 200m was hampered when Sweet Serendipity shifted in whilst weakening.
  • Tango Rain – When questioned T Clark stated that his mount travelled well in behind the speed however when placed under pressure after the 400m his mount raced flat. Stable representative Mr S Alexiou will assess Tango Rain's condition in the days subsequent and a decision will be made on the gelding's immediate racing future.
  • Redouble – App J Van Overmeire replaced B Avdulla as the rider of the gelding when the third emergency Malahat (B Avdulla) gained a start. When questioned App J Overmeire stated that he had been asked to ride the gelding conservatively. He stated as Redouble was racing quite keenly he elected to ensure that there was a sufficient margin between himself and Top Striker during the middle stages to enable him an opportunity to restrain his mount, should Redouble prove difficult to settle and race close to the heels of Top Striker. App J Van Overmeire conceded in retrospect he should have availed himself the opportunity to improve from passing he 600m to the 450m and he was advised that in the circumstances of todays race he had erred by not improving when he had the opportunity to do so.
  • Chauffeur – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Chauffeur rider C Brown stated that he had to ride his mount more prominently from tis wide barrier to ensure he raced in a position close to the running rail. He added that Chauffeur travelled well after settling outside Sweet Serendipity passing the 800m and leading up the 600m he was still confident that Chauffeur would race competitively. He said however after the 600m the colt did not appear to handle the surface which he believed had deteriorated approaching and rounding the home turn and from this point on Chauffeur was a beaten horse and weakened noticeably in the run home. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
  • Clear The Beach – Raced wide and without cover throughout. Stewards permitted C Reith to ride the gelding half a kilogram over its allotted weight of 53.5kg. Slow to begin.
  • Malahat – Stewards permitted B Avdulla to ride the gelding half a kilogram over its allotted weight of 53kg.
  • Sweet Serendipity – Knuckled on jumping.
