Key Factors: Provincial Championships

Published: 20 Mar 2016

Wyong gets its second Provincial Championships qualifier after Newcastle got rained out during the week. Kris Lees had his horses prepared for a home track assault on the big Autumn prize, but now he has to head south to in-form trainer Kim Waugh’s part of the Central Coast.

That may not be such a bad thing for Lees though, his genuine sprinter MAGIC OF DREAMS gets around the tight circuit well and his other contenders have run well there in the past. Waugh’s flying HETTY HEIGHTS will get back and needs a smart ride to get her home.

All odds provided by CrownBet for Wyong Race 7 (correct at 11:30am).

Value Bet

Boxed Trifecta (MAGIC OF DREAMS, HETTY HEIGHTS & DAISY DUKE)

1. POWERLINE Kris Lees (Newcastle) - scratched

2. MOSSTAR Paul Perry (Newcastle) $17

No match for HETTY HEIGHTS late in a Beaumont 1150m BM70 carrying 61.5kg. Up in distance a risk and others should be stronger late.

3. ELECTRIC POWER Kris Lees (Newcastle) $6

Has been off the scene since 4th July 2015 when 10th in a 1200m F&M BM85 at Rosehill carrying 58.5 kg. Recent trials only fair (5th and 4th). Enjoys the wet, check the yard and betting first-up.

4. TRIPLE HERO David Nugent (Newcastle) $21

Improved second-up, striding along on-pace and holding on for 1350m win at Beaumont in a BM70 carrying 56.5kg. Will be up there for a long time, but not as well placed at the weights.

5. IRON GEORGE  Tina Rogers (Gosford) $26

Went around at 80/1, but still managed solid 4th to Supreme Effort in Wyong Provincial Championships qualifier after getting a perfect run in transit. Could place based on that effort.

6. UTTAR PRADESH Ken Lantry (Newcastle) $81

Ran on to win a Beaemont BM60 over 1350m carrying 58.5kg. That run was OK, but this is much harder.

7. SOUTHERN DELIGHT Steve Hodge (Newcastle) $126

6th of 9 first-up before 5th of 8 in a Wyong Class 1 over 1350m. Another horse stepping up in grade.

8. MARPLE MISS Kris Lees (Newcastle) $6.5

Classy mare sure to improve second-up after 8th behind Eminent Duke in a 1100m BM77 at Warwick Farm carrying 60kg. Right in it, but wet track and wide barrier not ideal.

9. MAGIC OF DREAMS  Kris Lees (Newcastle) $5

Carried 58kg and ran on steadily for 7th behind Eminent Duke in a 1100m BM77 at Warwick Farm. Wyong's 1350m seems to suit in the wet. Big chance.

10. HETTY HEIGHTS Kim Waugh (Wyong) $3

Produced a big first-up win, storming home to a 1150m BM70 victory at Beaumont. Sure to be running on hard if gets a smart ride around the tight circuit. The one to beat.

11. DAISY DUKE Tony McEvoy (Hawkesbury) $4.2

Tough Canterbury win before chased steadily for 8th behind Supreme Effort in Provincial Championships qualifier over this track and distance. Wet track could help. Each-way.

12. DREAM LANE Nick Mitchell (Hawkesbury) $31

Very consistent mare that resumed with 3rd in Beaumont 1200m Class 1. This is much harder. Could sneak into multiples.

13. HAWAIIAN ROSE Grant Allard (Gosford) $61

Bold front-running mare that won a 1570m Class 3 at Cessnock. Will put in a strong performance up near the pace early. Expected to get run down.
