Vet Notes

  • Hutcho (Race 1)  – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to have a laceration to the near-fore cannon and was displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr G Portelli advised the colt will be spelled.
  • Gravitate (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be coughing. Co-trainer P Snowden advised Gravitate would be spelled.
  • Kimberley Star (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.
  • By Golly Molly (Race 3) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mr K Lees advised that By Golly Molly will have a lengthy break from racing.
  • Gretna (Race 4) – withdrawn at 1.04pm on veterinary advice when the filly was found to be lame in the near foreleg when being saddled up. Trainer Mr C Waller was asked to provide a veterinary clearance for Gretna prior to racing again.
  • Najmaat  (Race 4) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the off foreleg and displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer representative Mr L Jelfs advised Najmaat will be spelled.
  • Single Gaze (Race 6) – an inquiry into the reason for the filly falling on straightening was adjourned to a date to be fixed, as K O'Hara was taken by ambulance to hospital. A post-race veterinary examination revealed grazes to the poll and withers.
  • Happy Hannah (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed abrasions to the nearhind cannon and hock. Co-trainer Mr P Snowden advised Happy Hannah will be spelled.
  • Auvray (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.
  • Criterion (Race 9)  – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr D Hayes confirmed Criterion would be retired.
  • No More Tears (Race 10) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly had lost its off-hind plate in running.

Penalties & Fines

  • P King, rider of Craiglea Wandoo, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he shifted out on straightening, resulting in Dixie Chick being taken out across the running of Tulsa, which had to be in turn checked off the heels of Puritan. P King's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 13 April 2016 and to expire on Thursday, 21 April 2016, on which day he may ride.
  • K McEvoy, rider of Serene Majesty, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding for failing to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount shifting out passing the 200m, which resulted in Sonic Swish being crowded for room between Serene Majesty and Craiglee Wandoo, which resulted in Sonic Swish losing its running and having to be checked. K McEvoy's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 17 April 2016 and to expire on Thursday, 28 April 2016, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account that Serene Majesty had shifted out away from Suspense. Rider C Reith stated that the gelding did not handle the soft going. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • P King, rider of Craiglea Wandoo was fined $500 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on seven occasions prior to the 100m (two more than permitted)
  • B Prebble, rider of Powerline, the runner up, was fined $600 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted).
  • M Zahra, rider of Stellar Collision - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that: (1) after passing the 200m, he permitted Stellar Collision (M Zahra) to shift in, causing interference to Petits Filous; (2) after passing the 100m, after being taken out by Spieth, Bassett had to be checked due to Stellar Collision (M Zahra) shifting in. M Zahra's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence immediately and to expire on Friday, 22 April 2016, on which day he may ride.
  • C Maher, trainer of Petits Filous –  was fined $400 under AR117(3) when Petits Filous was taken off course immediately after the race and not returned. He was told he must produce a veterinary certificate for the filly.
  • B Prebble, rider of Takedown – the third placegetter, was fined $800 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted)
  • D Oliver, rider of Jameka  pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift in passing the 200m, resulting in Diamond Made being taken in and Alaskan Rose having to be checked off the heels of that runner. D Oliver's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 13 April 2016 and to expire on Friday, 22 April 2016, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account that Alaskan Rose was inclined to shift out away from Sacred Eye, which was racing to its inside.
  • J Mc Donald, rider of Grand Marshal, the third placegetter, was fined $1,500 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted).
  • T Angland, rider of Heavens Above,  the second placegetter, was fined $800 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted).

Summary of Races

RACE 1: TFE Hotels Fernhill Handicap (Listed) 1600m

  • Hutcho – checked on jumping between Gravitate, which shifted out, and Prized Icon. Rider D Dunn stated, after striking interference at the start, his mount never travelled comfortably and, in his opinion, may appreciate a firmer surface. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to have a laceration to the near-fore cannon and was displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr G Portelli advised the colt will be spelled.
  • Reinforced – slow to begin. Rider B Shinn was spoken to concerning weighing in close to being in breach of the overweight rule.
  • Lasqueti Spirit – slow to begin.
  • Bring Me The Bling – jumped awkwardly and lost ground.
  • Crown Him – overraced for some distance in the early and middle stages.
  • Gravitate – rider K McEvoy stated that when he had to steady the colt near the 600m it appeared to lose concentration and did not respond from that point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be coughing. Co-trainer P Snowden advised Gravitate would be spelled.

RACE 2: McGrath Estate Agents South Pacific Classic (Listed) 1400m

  • Tulsa – reared on jumping and missed the start. P King, rider of Craiglea Wandoo, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he shifted out on straightening, resulting in Dixie Chick being taken out across the running of Tulsa, which had to be in turn checked off the heels of Puritan. P King's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 13 April 2016 and to expire on Thursday, 21 April 2016, on which day he may ride.
  • Sonic Swish – blundered on jumping away.   • Look To The Stars – slow to begin and bumped when Dixie Chick jumped awkwardly. Approaching the 200m Look To The Stars, Mawahibb and Kimberley Star were briefly crowded between the winner, Handfast, which was shifting out to improve around King's Troop and Santa Ana Lane, which shifted in.
  • Dixie Chick – overraced in the early stages.
  • Puritan – overraced in the early stages.
  • Dark Steel – rider T Huet stated he was under no specific instructions, other than not to push his mount early. He added, whilst his mount began nicely, he felt he would have had to ride forward to hold the inside running, however, he then finished up further back than he had intended. Kimberley Star – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.
  • Craiglea Wandoo - rider P King was fined $500 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on seven occasions prior to the 100m (two more than permitted).

RACE 3: The Provincial Championships Final 1400m

  • Supreme Effort – got its off-hind leg up on the running board. When being backed out the gelding again got that leg up on the running board. Supreme Effort was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. Rider S Clipperton stated the gelding was unsuited by the tempo of the race, however was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mrs K Waugh was asked to report back on the future race plans for Supreme Effort.
  • By Golly Molly – slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mr K Lees advised that By Golly Molly will have a lengthy break from racing.
  • In Her Time – slow to begin.
  • Rustic Melody – at the 800m was crowded when Better Not Blue laid in.
  • Better Not Blue – overraced in the early stages.
  • His Majesty – held up until near the 250m.
  • Hetty Heights – had some difficulty obtaining a run passing the 250m.
  • Powerline – B Prebble, rider of the runner up, was fined $600 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted).

RACE 4: IG Markets Percy Sykes Stakes (Group 3) 1200m

  • Gretna – withdrawn at 1.04pm on veterinary advice when the filly was found to be lame in the near foreleg when being saddled up. Trainer Mr C Waller was asked to provide a veterinary clearance for Gretna prior to racing again. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Gretna be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made prior to 1.04pm to be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1st) Missrock less 11ȼ win and 12ȼ place 2nd) Prompt Response less 10ȼ place 3rd) Spright less 12ȼ place
  • Emphatically – slow to begin.
  • So Serene – overraced in the early stages.
  • Geneteau – overraced in the early stages.
  • Najmaat – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in the off foreleg and displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer representative Mr L Jelfs advised Najmaat will be spelled. Rider N Hall was spoken to concerning weighing in close to being in breach of the overweight rule.

RACE 5: Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Reg Name: Royal Sovereign Stakes) (Group 2) 1200m

  • Stellar Collision - M Zahra pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that: (1) after passing the 200m, he permitted Stellar Collision (M Zahra) to shift in, causing interference to Petits Filous; (2) after passing the 100m, after being taken out by Spieth, Bassett had to be checked due to Stellar Collision (M Zahra) shifting in. M Zahra's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence immediately and to expire on Friday, 22 April 2016, on which day he may ride.
  • Spill The Beans – near the 250m briefly hampered inside Egyptian Symbol, which shifted in.
  • Ghisoni – unable to obtain clear running at any point and could not be tested in the straight.
  • Hellbent – rider B Shinn could offer no excuse for the performance of the colt. He added Hellbent had a good run in transit, but failed to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Petits Filous – rider D Oliver reported that the filly got on the wrong leg, did not handle the right-handed way of going and struggled when placed under pressure. Trainer Mr C Maher concurred with D Oliver that Petits Filous was never comfortable racing in the clockwise direction and had a tendency to lay out throughout the event. Mr Maher was fined $400 under AR117(3) when Petits Filous was taken off course immediately after the race and not returned. He was told he must produce a veterinary certificate for the filly.
  • Takedown – B Prebble, rider of the third placegetter, was fined $800 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted).

RACE 6: James Boag's Premium Australian Oaks (Group 1) 2400m

  • Alaskan Rose – crowded on jumping away between Happy Hannah and Diamond Made, which shifted out after jumping awkwardly. At the 1800m got its head up when being restrained off the heels of Sacred Eye. Capella, which was following, had to be checked as a consequence. D Oliver (Jameka) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift in passing the 200m, resulting in Diamond Made being taken in and Alaskan Rose having to be checked off the heels of that runner. D Oliver's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 13 April 2016 and to expire on Friday, 22 April 2016, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account that Alaskan Rose was inclined to shift out away from Sacred Eye, which was racing to its inside.
  • Jameka – at the 1800m, when the pace steadied, had to be checked off the heels of Happy Hannah. Again at the 1000m had to be checked off the heels of Diamond Made. When questioned concerning being ridden back in the field, D Oliver stated his mount began fairly, but from its wide barrier did not muster early speed and he elected to go back, as he felt he would have had to make too much use of the filly to take up a position forward and closer to the rail.
  • Sofia Rosa – on straightening was inclined to lay in behind Believe.
  • Single Gaze – an inquiry into the reason for the filly falling on straightening was adjourned to a date to be fixed, as K O'Hara was taken by ambulance to hospital. A post-race veterinary examination revealed grazes to the poll and withers.
  • Happy Hannah – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, B Shinn stated he had a good run to the 1000m, however, struggled from the 600m and may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed abrasions to the nearhind cannon and hock. Co-trainer Mr P Snowden advised Happy Hannah will be spelled.

RACE 7: Schweppes Sydney Cup (Group 1) 3200m

  • Who Shot Thebarman – slow to begin. At the 600m, as Café Society improved to the outside of the heels of Dee I Cee, Libran was taken out and Who Shot Thebarman was briefly hampered.
  • Dee I Cee – Gallante made the turn at the 1000m awkwardly, shifted out, taking Like A Carousel out onto Dee I Cee.
  • Like A Carousel – when questioned regarding racing more forward today, B Spriggs stated his instructions were to be positive, as the gelding had not performed well racing back in the field at its most recent start. He added his intention had been to take up a midfield position, but when his mount did not show a lot of early pace and was crossed he was left wide and, therefore, elected to press on and race outside the leader, Gallante. Trainer Mr K Keys was reminded of his obligation to notify the Stewards of any change of tactics.
  • Bayanova – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Auvray – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.
  • Grand Marshal – J McDonald, rider of the third placegetter, was fined $1,500 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted).

RACE 8: The Coolmore Legacy Stakes (Reg Name: Queen Of The Turf Stakes) Group 1 1600m

  • Artistry – slow to begin.
  • Risque – on straightening shifted out and made contact with the hindquarter of Miss Rose De Lago and became unbalanced. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.  
  •  Heavens Above – raced greenly under pressure over the concluding stages. T Angland, rider of the second placegetter, was fined $800 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one more than permitted).
  • Suavito - a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 9: Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1) 2000m

  • Happy Clapper – which was fractious and reared when placed in the barrier, was inspected by the Club's Veterinary Officers behind the gates and passed fit to start. Held up rounding the turn and again at the 200m.
  • It's Somewhat – near the 1300m, as Awesome Rock commenced to cross to the lead, Leebaz was directed out and came into contact with It's Somewhat for a short distance, as Leebaz assumed a position in the one out line.
  • Lucia Valentina – at the entrance to the straight had to check when endeavouring to improve between The United States and Happy Trails where there was not sufficient room. The incident was compounded when Happy Trails was taken out slightly by Happy Clapper.
  • Criterion – Near the 250m had to be checked off the heels of Awesome Rock when being directed to the inside of that runner, which weakened quickly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr D Hayes confirmed Criterion would be retired.
  • Happy Trails – momentarily held up passing the 200m.
  • Preferment – rider H Bowman stated that, in the soft going he was obliged to niggle his mount to hold its position. He added that when Preferment did pick up he had a wall of horses in front of him near the 300m, however, when he asked for an effort his mount could not quicken. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller stated, when caught between runners Preferment, was unable to accelerate in the going and, as a result, did not finish the race off. He added Preferment will be spelled.

RACE 10: Sensis Sapphire Stakes (Group 2) 1200m

  • Two Blue – was late on course when the float did not arrive on time to pick up the mare.
  • I've Got The Looks – slow to begin.
  • No More Tears – had to be steadied near the 200m when Griante (C Williams) shifted out. C Williams was reprimanded and told to exercise more care. Rider T Berry stated No More Tears travelled well in the run but, in his opinion, did not handle the chopped conditions when asked to improve. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly had lost its off-hind plate in running.
  • Bounding – rider K McEvoy stated his mount, racing to the inside, did not appreciate the chopped up going.
  • Ottoman – rider J McDonald could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance. A postrace veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Sultry Feeling – when questioned as to why he directed his mount out to the extreme outside in the straight, H Bowman stated that his instructions from trainer Mr J Cummings had been to direct his mount to what he thought was the best going. Whilst the Stewards accepted that the path he had taken had not been the difference between Sultry Feeling finishing in the placings, nevertheless both Mr Cummings and H Bowman were advised they felt the degree of the shift had been unnecessary in the circumstances.
  • Brook Road – an inquiry into whip use by rider C Schofield was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
