Vet Notes

  • Not Surprising (Race 3) – the filly, which slipped over in front in the tie up stalls, underwent a prerace veterinary examination and was passed fit to start.

Penalties & Fines

  • A Bullock, rider of Not Surprising - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 300m resulting in Artova being checked and taken in onto Nourishing which hit the running rail and had to be checked. A Bullock's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence after a suspension incurred at Gunnedah on 8 May 2016, namely, Monday 23 May 2016, and as a result he will not be eligible to resume riding until Friday 3 June 2016 on which day he may ride.
  • G Bennett, trainer of Clearly Innocent was fined $200 for failing to notify the removal of bar plates from Clearly Innocent. A release to that effect was made this morning at 9.20am. In assessing penalty Mr Bennett was told that the penalty was ameliorated by the Stewards being able to make a race morning release advising that the bar plates were off.
  • S Lisnyy, rider of Decision Time – was fined $200 under AR137A(3) for unnecessary use of the whip on a beaten horse.
  • J Penza, rider of Press Report - pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that he permitted Press Report to shift out under the whip over the concluding stages resulting in Hetty Heights having to be checked. J Penza's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 24 May 2016 and to expire on Sunday 29 May 2016 on which day he may ride.
  • L Henry, rider of Speedy Squib – was fined $100 under AR137A(4)(c) for unnecessary use of the whip on a beaten horse.

Summary of Races

RACE 1 – Kia Ora Stud Benchmark 78 Handicap 2200m

  • Meiner Freccia – blundered making the crossing near the 1600m.
  • Murphy's Delight – When questioned apprentice R Hutchings stated that his mount was slow to begin, did not show any early speed and as a result got further back than he intended. He stated that he was then disadvantaged in a moderately run race and could not quicken when the pressure was applied rounding the home turn. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative A Rabbett could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance other than the horse raced further back than the stable had hoped. He undertook to report back if there is anything amiss with Murphy's Delight subsequent to the race. Apprentice R Hutchings was reprimanded under AR137A(4)(b) for having used his whip with an action above shoulder height.

RACE 2 – Isuzu Ute Scone Benchmark 77 Handicap 1100m

  • Barood – the colt, which dislodged its rider K McEvoy leaving the mounting enclosure, was caught after cantering some 400 metres. It was examined by the club's veterinary officer and passed fit to start. Barood, which was held up, was tightened for room near the 300m when endeavouring to improve between Mogador and Esgrimidor which was taken out by Hot Hit which shifted ground slightly. Inside the 200m again had to be checked when tightened for room between Mogador and Wonderbolt (K Jennings) which shifted out slightly. Apprentice K Jennings reprimanded.
  • Hot Vinni – crowded on jumping when Ice Chiller shifted out.
  • Star Shaft -- crowded on jumping when Ice Chiller shifted out.
  • Crooked Blaze – slow to begin.
  • All Summer Long – on jumping bumped heavily with Texan Lad.
  • Texan Lad – on jumping bumped heavily with All Summer Long.
  • Selectify – was briefly crowded near the 600m and had to be steadied when Esgrimidor was taken in by Grand Condor (T Marshall) which shifted in when not fully clear. Apprentice T Marshall was told to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground. Had difficulty obtaining a clear run and could not be fully tested in the straight.
  • Grand Condor – rounding the home turn and when placed under pressure in the straight hung out and disadvantaged its rider.
  • Brooklyn Storm – A post race veterinary examination of the gelding, which weakened badly in the straight, did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer B Baker stated that the run had been disappointing and that he intended to have the gelding vetted and expected it would spell. Mr Baker was advised that Brooklyn Storm must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.
  • Fireball – When questioned concerning Fireball leading today, apprentice W Costin confirmed that her instructions were to be positive from the barrier. Trainer J Bowen was reminded of her obligation to advise the Stewards if there are any instructions issued that may result in a change of tactics. Ms Bowen was advised that the gelding, which bled from both nostrils for the second time, would now be barred from racing for life.

RACE 3 – Pryde's Easifeed Woodlands Stakes 1100m

  • Not Surprising – the filly, which slipped over in front in the tie up stalls, underwent a prerace veterinary examination and was passed fit to start.
  • Suspenders – slow to begin. Raced in restricted room to the inside of Nonpareil for some distance in the early stages.
  • Try A Lil Harder – slow to begin and hampered shortly after when Too Fast For Love shifted out after jumping awkwardly.
  • Too Fast For Love – jumped awkwardly.
  • Don't Doubt Her – slow to begin.
  • Manaya – slow to begin.
  • Mooshakissa – while racing keenly near the 600m had to be checked off the heels of Artova.
  • Artova – on the home turn had to be checked off the heels of Nourishing. Was checked near the 300m when Not Surprising shifted in. Rider S Clenton was spoken to for sitting up and failing to ride her mount out from the 150m.
  • Nourishing -- A Bullock, the rider of Not Surprising, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 300m resulting in Artova being checked and taken in onto Nourishing which hit the running rail and had to be checked. RACE 4 – Coolmore Denise's Joy Stakes 1100m

  • Don't Doubt Marley – got it near hind leg up on the barrier partition, was unloaded, inspected and passed fit to start.
  • Credit Card Miss – raced ungenerously in the early stages and got its head up when being restrained off the heels Fancy Nickers on straightening.
  • Positive Charge – laid out in the straight and proved difficult to ride.
  • Regatta Rebel – near the 600m was awkwardly placed close to the heels of Way Too Good after receiving a bump from Credit Card Miss which shifted out.

RACE 5 – Inglis 3yo Guineas 1400m

  • Meteora Miss – was buffeted shortly after the start between Professor Marx and Supply And Demand which shifted out.
  • Girl Sunday – at the 300m when commencing to give ground was briefly hampered when Supply And Demand shifted in.

RACE 6 – Yarraman Park – Horsepower Luskin Star Stakes 1300m

  • Clearly Innocent – trainer G Bennett was fined $200 for failing to notify the removal of bar plates from Clearly Innocent. A release to that effect was made this morning at 9.20am. In assessing penalty Mr Bennett was told that the penalty was ameliorated by the Stewards being able to make a race morning release advising that the bar plates were off.
  • Music Magnate – the gelding, which arrived late on course due to a float delay, was inspected by the club's veterinary officer and passed fit to start.
  • Decision Time – to be ridden more forward; raced outside the leader. Near the 300m was briefly crowded between River Lad and Cradle Me, which was taken out by Music Magnate. Then near the 200m was crowded and had to be restrained when tightened for room between Cradle Me, which shifted out slightly, and River Lad, which shifted in and away from Federal which also shifted in. Rider S Lisnyy was fined $200 under AR137A(3) for unnecessary use of the whip on a beaten horse.
  • Piamimi – when held up shifted out near the 300m inconveniencing Unknown Destiny. Rider apprentice W Costin was told to exercise more care.

RACE 7 – Godolphin Dark Jewel Classic 1400m

  • Ammirata – Stable representative H Devlin and rider R Thompson confirmed the instructions today were to be in the first five whereby Ammirata was able to take up a position outside the leader. Trainer J Pride will be interviewed in respect to whether he had complied with his obligation to advise of a change in tactics. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • She's Clean – hampered on jumping away when Press Report shifted out. Was held up and unable to be fully tested at any point in the straight.
  • First Bloom – overraced in the early stages. In the straight was inclined to get its head up and laid in under pressure.
  • Danish Twist – overraced in the early and middle stages.
  • Hetty Heights - J Penza pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that he permitted his mount Press Report to shift out under the whip over the concluding stages resulting in Hetty Heights having to be checked. J Penza's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 24 May 2016 and to expire on Sunday 29 May 2016 on which day he may ride.
  • In A Wink – rider G Ryan stated that In A Wink is an excitable mare and in his opinion it held its breath during the run. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer G Bennett reported that the In A Wink will be retired from the stable.

RACE 8 – Arrowfield Ortensia Stakes 1100m

  • Brook Road -- got it near hind leg up on the barrier partition, was unloaded, inspected and passed fit to start.
  • Kuro – rider S Arnold reported that after knuckling over badly at the start, his mount travelled well but was most disappointing. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative H Devlin was asked to report back if there is anything amiss with Kuro subsequent to the race.
  • Furnaces – when questioned J McDonald could offer no explanation for the failure of his mount to finish its race off. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Speedy Squib – rider L Henry was fined $100 under AR137A(4)(c) for unnecessary use of the whip on a beaten horse.
