Vet Notes

  • Secateur (Race 2) – a veterinary examination of Secateur, which sustained a minor abrasion to the near-side nostril whilst being transported to the course, passed the gelding fit to start.
  • Dashie De Luxe (Race 4) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare lost its off-fore plate in running.
  • Hangover Monday (Race 4) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare had been galloped on to the near-hind leg, sustaining multiple wounds between the hock and the fetlock.
  • Snitzel Knight (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a small speedy cut to the off-hind pastern.
  • Skip Course (Race 6) – On pulling up the gelding was found to have broken down badly in the near foreleg and, after assessment by the official veterinarian, was humanely euthanised. An inquiry will be conducted on a date to be fixed. A necropsy will be conducted on Skip Course.
  • Gamblestown (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed Gamblestown, which missed the start and then raced disappointingly, to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mr J Pride was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.
  • Harlem Lady (Race 8) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be mildly lame in the near foreleg. Trainer's representative Mr C Duckworth was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare trialling. Passing the winning post ran out abruptly.
  • Better Not Blue (Race 9) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the near-fore cannon.

Penalties & Fines

  • App. Grace - as this was the fourth occasion in the past 12 months that App. Grace has had issues with not being able to claim his full allowance, the Stewards will arrange, through Industry Training for some professional assistance with his diet and preparation for race meetings. In the interim period App. Grace was given permission to raise his riding weight to 53 kilograms. He was fined $200 under LR70.
  • App. R Hutchings, rider of Tsaritsa was fined $200 for a making a celebratory gesture prior to passing the winning post.
  • App. T Marshall, rider of Distraught, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he shifted in when insufficiently clear of Muy Bien approaching the first turn and, further, that he continued to shift in when insufficiently clear of Lofiel (App. K Jennings), resulting in that runner having to be checked off the heels of Distraught. App. Marshall's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period of six meetings, to commence on Tuesday, 31 May 2016 and to expire on Friday, 10 June 2016, on which day he may ride, to be served concurrently with the other suspension incurred in this race.
  • App. T Marshall, rider of Distraught, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to shift out under riding near the 100m, resulting in the crowding to runners to his outside. App. Marshall's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period five meetings to commence on Tuesday, 31 May 2016 and to expire on Thursday, 9 June 2016, on which day he may ride, to be served concurrently with his other suspension in this event.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Les Carlyon AC Plate 1200m

  • Argie Bargie – as no suitable apprentice was available at the weight, App. L Grace was permitted to claim only 1.5 of his 2 kilogram allowance. Overraced when being restrained off the heels of Omiya in the middle stages.
  • Murrmaid – which was a little slow to begin, was hampered on jumping when Omiya shifted in. When questioned, App. M McGillivray stated his mount sweated up prior to the race and, after being hampered at the start, he raced at the rear of the field and was not able to quicken when the tempo increased. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Chipanda – which was held up entering the straight, was initially disappointed when a run did not develop to the outside of Virgilio and had to shift back across the heels of that runner and the leader, Legerity, approaching the 200m to obtain clear running.

RACE 2: Leilani and Luskin Star Handicap 2000m

  • Secateur – a veterinary examination of Secateur, which sustained a minor abrasion to the near-side nostril whilst being transported to the course, passed the gelding fit to start.
  • Defrost My Heart – jumped awkwardly.
  • Ghost Protocol – on jumping was hampered when Hipparchus was taken in by Defrost My Heart. Over the concluding stages could not be tested when held up on the heels of Dance Of Heroes.
  • Candelara – when questioned, T Angland stated he had no instructions other than to ride the mare how it jumped away. He added that when Candelara jumped best he dictated terms in front, but its performance was most disappointing and it was a beaten horse from the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 3: Merman and Sydeston Handicap 1100m

  • Surfin' Safari – hampered on jumping away when King's Troop shifted in after receiving a bump from Bitburg.
  • Noble Joey – was taken out and obliged to race three wide from the 800m when, after being crossed by For Me Dad, Pitburg was directed to the outside of the heels of that runner. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, App. R Hutchings stated his mount became worked up prior to the start. He added the gelding was inclined to lay out and was not comfortable racing in between horses.
  • Wide Acclaim – inclined to lay in under pressure in the latter part of the straight.

RACE 4: TAB Highway Handicap 1500m

  • Artistic Beauty – as there was no apprentice available and no senior rider available at the weight, permission was granted for App. T Wolfgram to ride the filly at 54.5 kilograms (1 kilogram over its handicapped weight).
  • Supreme Lad – slow to begin.
  • Marvel – slow to begin and then crowded shortly after between Cottonwood Grove and Nagging. At the 1300m was steadied away from the heels of Supreme Lad, which shifted in.
  • Ziganui – at the 1000m on two occasions improved up and clipped the heels of Hangover Monday and had to be checked. In the incident Ziganui dipped. App. M McGillivray was told to give more clearance between his mount and the mount he is trailing.
  • Caribbean Concert – when questioned, C Reith stated that the mare raced very dourly. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Cottonwood Grove – App. S Clenton reported she was not happy with the action of the mare in front. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr L Roberts advised the mare will now be spelled.
  • Dashie De Luxe – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare lost its off-fore plate in running.
  • Hangover Monday – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare had been galloped on to the near-hind leg, sustaining multiple wounds between the hock and the fetlock.

RACE 5: Pat Hyland Handicap 1400m

  • Serious Satire – slow to begin.
  • Seeking Asylum – jumped away awkwardly.
  • More Than Fabulous – at the 600m had to be steadied off the heels of Tsaritsa. In this incident More Than Fabulous came into contact with Snitzel Knight.
  • Snitzel Knight – when questioned, App. W Costin stated that, after being bumped at the 600m, the gelding did not respond to her riding from that point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a small speedy cut to the off-hind pastern. Co-trainer Mr P Snowden stated that, whilst Snitzel Knight covered some ground in the run, the performance was most disappointing. He undertook to report if there was anything amiss with the gelding subsequent to the race.
  • High Spirit – after missing the start slightly, was then caught without cover three wide throughout.
  • Tsaritsa – App. R Hutchings was fined $200 for a making a celebratory gesture prior to passing the winning post.

RACE 6: Noel McGrowdie Handicap 1100m

  • Skip Course – slow to begin. On pulling up the gelding was found to have broken down badly in the near foreleg and, after assessment by the official veterinarian, was humanely euthanised. Rider App. K Jennings stated he was not entirely comfortable with his mount's action at the top of the straight, where it dipped. App. Jennings added he allowed his mount to balance up, recommenced to ride and the gelding finished the race off reasonably well. Trainer Mrs D Grisedale was asked to produce stable records. An inquiry will be conducted on a date to be fixed. A necropsy will be conducted on Skip Course.
  • Shadow Force – shifted out under pressure in the latter part of the straight.
  • Our Renaissance – when questioned regarding the performance of the winner as compared to its 11th placing at Rosehill on 7 May 2016, trainer Mr J Deamer stated that, as instanced in the report of the Stewards' inquiry on the day, the rider on that occasion had been instructed to go forward, however, from its wide draw, rather than make use of the mare to go forward and cross, he elected to restrain, whereby Our Renaissance overraced badly when trapped wide without cover. Mr Deamer added that today, as per the tactics notification, the mare was able to take up a more forward position outside the leader and, as a result, finished the race off strongly.

RACE 7: Neville Begg Handicap 1400m

  • Rockolicious – held up for some distance near the 200m when it proceeded into a narrow run between Foreign Prince and Ryker.
  • Great Esteem – briefly crowded at the 900m when Foreign Prince shifted in. Berry Delicious – had some difficulty obtaining a clear run approaching the 150m.
  • Gamblestown – a post-race veterinary examination revealed Gamblestown, which missed the start and then raced disappointingly, to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mr J Pride was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.

RACE 8: Cecil Godby Handicap 1400m

  • Harlem Lady – threw its head in the air and ran out at the start, missing the start (3L). As the mare has offended previously, the Stewards ruled that it must trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards. When questioned, App. R Hutchings stated he crossed to the rail and gradually made up ground, but nevertheless Harlem Lady was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be mildly lame in the near foreleg. Trainer's representative Mr C Duckworth was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare trialling. Passing the winning post ran out abruptly.
  • Muy Bien – was briefly tightened shortly after the start when Distraught (App. T Marshall) shifted in, before being crowded by its rider. App. Marshall was told to exercise more care. Approaching the first turn Muy Bien was again hampered.
  • Lofiel – commencing to make the first turn had to be checked. App. T Marshall, rider of Distraught, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he shifted in when insufficiently clear of Muy Bien approaching the first turn and, further, that he continued to shift in when insufficiently clear of Lofiel (App. K Jennings), resulting in that runner having to be checked off the heels of Distraught. App. Marshall's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period of six meetings, to commence on Tuesday, 31 May 2016 and to expire on Friday, 10 June 2016, on which day he may ride, to be served concurrently with the other suspension incurred in this race.
  • Pindan Pearl – approaching the 1200m Pindan Pearl, which was crossing with Campania (App. W Costin), had to be checked away from the heels of that runner when App. Costin straightened her mount and then shifted out to avoid tightening to Sebrina and Song Of Laughter to her inside.  
  • Dream Lane – at the 100m Dream Lane and Song And Laughter were crowded between Sebrina and Distraught (App. T Marshall), which shifted out under pressure. App. Marshall pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he allowed his mount to shift out under riding near the 100m, resulting in the crowding to runners to his outside. App. Marshall's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period five meetings to commence on Tuesday, 31 May 2016 and to expire on Thursday, 9 June 2016, on which day he may ride, to be served concurrently with his other suspension in this event. Close to the finish line Dream Lane, which was inclined to lay in, had to be checked when tightened by Sebrina (App. D Panya), which shifted in, and Song And Laughter (A Hyeronimus), which shifted out. Both App. Panya and A Hyeronimus were reprimanded and told to make greater effort to keep their mounts straight.

RACE 9: Joe Brown MBE Handicap 1200m

  • Sebring Sun – got its head up, jumped away awkwardly and then had to be restrained off the heels of Mohave and Final Decision, both of which shifted ground.
  • Mohave – passing the 300m Mohave, which was commencing to give ground, was tightened between Grunderzeit (B Avdulla) and Cape Crusader (A Hyeronimus), which shifted out. B Avdulla and A Hyeronimus were both told to exercise more care.
  • Figtree – was disappointed for a run inside Powerline approaching the 200m and then had to shift out across the heels of runners to obtain clear ground over the latter stages.
  • Cape Crusader – hampered near the 150m when Grunderzeit shifted in.
  • Better Not Blue – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the near-fore cannon.
  • She's Miss Devine – when questioned regarding the performance, App. R Hutchings could offer no explanation for the mare's failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer's representative Mr C Duckworth was advised that the Stewards would adjourn the inquiry into the poor performance of She's Miss Devine pending a report of a full veterinary check from the stable veterinarian.
