Summary of Races

RACE 1: Can Assist Cancer Support Handicap 1200m

  • Dark Eyes – rider S Clipperton stated that, as notified by Stewards pre-race, his instructions were to take up a forward position and it was anticipated he would be racing outside the lead. He added that Dark Eyes was somewhat fractious in the barrier prior to the start being effected and, as the gates were released, jumped awkwardly, became unbalanced and lost ground. S Clipperton further stated that shortly after the start he was then hampered when Yuma Desert, which was positioned directly to his outside, shifted in, which then resulted in his mount settling at the tail of the field in a trailing position behind Untamed Diamond. When questioned if there was an opportunity to race on the back of Yuma Desert near the 600m, S Clipperton stated that Dark Eyes was travelling keenly and, as he was caught up inside the heels of Yuma Desert, he was unwilling to come back several lengths and shift out to race on the back of that runner, and for this reason remained held up making the home turn and in the early part of the straight. He added that approaching the 200m he attempted to improve into a  narrow run between Gendebien and Untamed Diamond, but when both runners shifted ground slightly he was obliged to severely check his mount when disappointed. S Clipperton further added, after this incident, he desisted from placing his mount under pressure when his mount was not in a competitive position. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Static Lift – did not obtain completely clear running until approaching the 200m.
  • Yuma Desert – when questioned regarding his riding of the filly, App. A Adkins stated that his instructions were if the filly commenced well to take advantage of that and lead, but if his mount did not commence well he was given the option of riding his mount with cover. App. Adkins stated, after his mount jumped awkwardly, he elected to settle in a midfield position and race with cover behind Untamed Diamond. He added that in the middle stages his mount commenced to race keenly and, as a consequence, his mount shifter wider on the track, which resulted in the filly being left four wide without cover. When questioned as to whether there was an opportunity to allow Yuma Desert to stride forward and take up a position outside the leader, Noble Joey, App. Adkins stated, if he was to do so, he was of the view that runners to his inside would endeavour to hold him out and for this reason he elected to remain racing in a four wide position where his mount travelled comfortably. After taking evidence from co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden, who confirmed the instructions, the Stewards advised App. Adkins, that, in their opinion, he had erred in not allowing Yuma Desert to stride forward in the early stages and endeavour to take up a position outside the leader, Noble Joey. App. Adkins was further told that wherever possible he should avoid covering unnecessary ground.

RACE 2: Can Assist Volunteers Plate 1200m

  • Al Minhaad - slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

  • Who Said It's Easy – overraced badly in the middle stages.
  • Conchita – rider T Huet stated he had no specific instructions, except to take up a forward position. He added the filly commenced well, but when Treviso, which was positioned to his outside, went forward of him in the early stages he elected to take up a trailing position. He added Conchita failed to travel at any stage of the event and, as he endeavoured to improve from the 600m, his mount came under pressure and was most disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer's representative Mr S Perry expressed some surprise in that the filly was crossed in the early stages and, in his view, this was the primary reason for its disappointing performance. Mr Perry indicated that Conchita would now be spelled and undertook to report back on the progress of the filly subsequent to the race. On this assurance, the Stewards took no action against the filly.
  • Morton's Fork – when questioned regarding his riding in the early stages and if there was an opportunity to hold a position on the back of the eventual winner, Russian Revolution, T Clark stated he anticipated take up a forward position, however, he was also instructed to allow the colt to settle where comfortable and not to make use of his mount in the early stages. He added that on jumping he was able to obtain a position behind Russian Revolution, but when that runner improved its position in the middle stages to take up the lead, Morton's Fork did not travel comfortably and for this reason he elected not to ride his mount forward to maintain its position, which resulted in Difficult To Get being able to cross his mount near the 800m. T Clark added he then was able to improve between Squared and Difficult To Get shortly after straightening, whereby his mount finished the race off well.
  • Infra Dig – when questioned, J Collett advised that, whilst the filly was caught wide, it travelled comfortably, however, after racing tight rounding the home turn, did not finish its race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

  • Voilier – App. A Adkins stated the gelding travelled well throughout the race and the only excuse he could offer for today's performance was it failed to run out a strong 1600m. A postrace veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a minor laceration to the inside of the off hind leg.
