Penalties & Fines

  • J Collett, rider of Chaos, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that on straightening he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Calaway Cruizer, resulting in that runner losing its running and having to be checked. J Collett's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 3 July 2016 and to expire on Sunday, 10 July 20167, on which day he may ride.
  • M Bell, rider of Suboric, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that, approaching and passing the winning post, he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Dubaiinstyle, resulting in Dubaiinstyle being crowded and being taken in onto Lanciato, which was taken in and made contact with Vanderkemp and also hampering So Willie. M Bell's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday, 12 July 2016 and to expire on Sunday, 24 July 2016, on which day he may ride.
  • R Hutchings....Wouldnt It Be Nice – on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4pm the Stewards gave permission for C Reith to replace R Hutchings as the rider of the gelding when it was established that R Hutchings would not be able to make the weight. After interviewing R Hutchings, he advised that, due to a miscommunication between his manager and he, the engagement was accepted, however, when it was noted that the gelding had 54 kilos he sought immediate approval to be relieved from his engagement. In all the circumstances R Hutchings was fined the sum of $200 (AR120(b)).
  • App. K Jennings, rider of Avonaco, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that he permitted his mount to shift out inside the 100m when insufficiently clear of Embley, resulting in Embley being taken out across the running of Thurston and contributing to Thurston having to be checked. App. Jennings' permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 10 July 2016 and to expire on Friday, 15 July 2016, on which day he may ride.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: tab.com.au Handicap 1400m

  • Cogliere – slow to begin and shortly after the start was crowded between Ready For Success and Sweet Chestnut.
  • Ready For Success – slow to begin and shortly after the start was crowded when Awoke shifted out.
  • Sweet Chestnut – shortly after the start had to be steadied away from the heels of High Mist (R Hutchings), which shifted in when not clear. R Hutchings was advised that he must make more effort to prevent his mounts from shifting ground when not clear.
  • Moohariba – overraced in the early stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Awoke – overraced in the early stages.
  • High Mist – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Octavian Augustus – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Foxplay – when questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the straight and particularly the vigour he applied to the filly between the 300m and 200m, B Shinn stated, after following Octavian Augustus into the straight, he shifted to the outside of that runner soon after straightening, whereby Foxplay commenced to improve into the race. He added that, having regard to the manner in which he perceived Foxplay was ridden at its most recent start and in giving consideration to the 58 kilograms carried by the filly today, he continued to allow his mount to improve without placing it under full pressure between the 300m and 200m, as in his opinion this would allow his mount the best chance to finish its race off. B Shinn further stated that, when the eventual winner, Awoke, improved up to his mount near the 200m, he then placed his mount under fully pressure, however, Foxplay did not respond as he had hoped and was quickly headed by Awoke and then beaten comfortably in the run to the line. Whilst accepting his actions had not materially affected the finishing position of Foxplay, the Stewards advised B Shinn, in their opinion, he would have been better served by placing his mount under pressure sooner than he did on this occasion, which would have provided his mount the opportunity to maintain its advantage over Awoke as the field approached the 200m and, in addition, the opportunity to respond sooner to his riding.

RACE 2: Schweppes Handicap 1900m

  • My Fair Lady – the start was delayed when the mare, which was positioned in the stall next to Pindan Pearl, which became fractious, lost its bubble cheeker. Raced fiercely throughout the early stages of the event and for some distance approaching the first turn was checked to avoid the heels of Pindan Pearl. As a consequence, rider C Reith shifted to the outside of Pindan Pearl near the 1500m to allow My Fair Lady to stride forward and ultimately lead. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have sustained an abrasion to the offhind bumper.
  • Song And Laughter – crowded on jumping by Shelley's Girl, which began awkwardly and shifted in.
  • Piamimi – began awkwardly and shortly after the start was crowded between Pindan Pearl and Destination Tucson.
  • Shelley's Girl – making the first turn was hampered and taken wider when My Fair Lady shifted out to improve. In this incident Shelley's Girl lost ground and then was obliged to be ridden forward by its rider, App. T Marshall, to re-establish a position behind the leaders. Making the home turn raced tight between Destination Tucson and Princess Aria, which shifted to the outside of Kontiki Dane to obtain clear running.
  • Princess Aria – approaching the 300m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Kontiki Dane, which shifted out slightly.
  • Destination Tucson – rider T Clark was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m (one additional).
  • Kontiki Dane – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Piamimi – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Princess Aria – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 3: TAB Rewards Handicap 1100m

  • Got The Goss – crowded on jumping between Termele and Aroused, which shifted in. Laid in under pressure in the straight.
  • Termele – began awkwardly and shortly after the start was crowded by El Sasso, which shifted out. App. W Costin stated her saddle shifted back during the early part of the race, but then near the 200m, as she endeavoured to obtain clear running between Felines and Got The Goss, her saddle shifted to the off-side, which resulted in Termele being awkwardly placed close to the heels of Felines and having to be checked. Over the final 100m Termele then had difficulty obtaining clear running.
  • Freeze The Charges – rider K O'Hara could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance and indicated that the mare had felt comfortable in its action prior to the race and she had expected it to run well. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have sustained a laceration to the near-hind coronet. Trainer Mr J Coyle expressed disappointment with the performance of the mare and undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Freeze The Charges subsequent to the race.

RACE 4: ATC Winter Cup (Listed) 2400m

  • Junoob – hampered shortly after the start.

RACE 5: TAB Highway Handicap 1800m

  • Chaos – when it was established that the gelding, which was presented in the mounting enclosure with blinkers, had raced at its last start at Taree on 3 June 2016 without the gear and no notification of replacing the blinkers on it had been received subsequent to that, the Stewards permitted the blinkers to be removed from Chaos when it arrived at the barrier.
  • Agrionius – overraced in the early stages. Lost its off-fore plate during the running of the event.
  • Erika – held for clear running until approaching the 200m, whereby it then shifted in to obtain a narrow run to the inside of Just Good.
  • Macmissile – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Calaway Cruizer – J Collett, rider of Chaos, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that on straightening he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Calaway Cruizer, resulting in that runner losing its running and having to be checked. J Collett's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 3 July 2016 and to expire on Sunday, 10 July 20167, on which day he may ride. Rider B Ward stated that the only excuse he could offer for the disappointing performance of the filly was that it had come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr N Olive advised Calaway Cruizer would now be spelled.
  • Premier's Gift – rider B Avdulla stated his mount was disadvantaged by being pressured in the lead by Macmissile, but was still disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. He added, in his view, Premier's Gift would be better suited on heavy going. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr M Miladinovic agreed with  the explanations offered by rider B Avdulla and undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of the mare in the days subsequent.

RACE 6: Club Marconi Handicap 1500m

  • Lanciato – slow to begin. M Bell, rider of Suboric, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that, approaching and passing the winning post, he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Dubaiinstyle, resulting in Dubaiinstyle being crowded and being taken in onto Lanciato, which was taken in and made contact with Vanderkemp and also hampering So Willie. M Bell's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday, 12 July 2016 and to expire on Sunday, 24 July 2016, on which day he may ride. When questioned regarding the gelding settling further back in the field, J Collett stated he had no specific instructions, however, after jumping fairly and a number of runners to his inside held their position, he raced further back than anticipated to avoid being caught wide.
  • Suboric – overraced in the middle stages and near the 600m was checked to avoid the heels of So Willie. Near the 300m was steadied to avoid the heels of Dubaiinstyle (T Angland), which shifted out. T Angland was reprimanded and told to make more effort to keep his mounts straight.
  • Surfin' Safari – hampered and taken wider when Suboric was taken out by Dubaiinstyle near the 300m.
  • Dubaiinstyle – laid out under pressure in the straight.
  • Vanderkemp – when questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding, B Avdulla stated he intended taking up a forward position and, from his wide barrier, he was able to go forward without unduly pressuring his mount. He added, after crossing Rosettas Whey approaching the first turn, he positioned his mount back off the early leader, Classic Uniform, so as to not place pressure on that runner to ensure that the race was run at a slow early tempo. B Avdulla further stated that he felt this was his best opportunity to disadvantage runners coming from the tail of the field. He added, when placed under pressure in the straight, Vanderkemp was inclined to lay out under pressure and was somewhat difficult to ride out fully to the finish.
  • Rosettas Whey – App. J Innes Jr stated his instructions were to endeavour to find cover and for this reason, after travelling a short distance, although his mount had begun well, he elected to take hold, whereby his mount commenced to overrace. He added, when the early leaders did not improve forward as he had expected on a slow tempo, Rosettas Whey continued to overrace throughout the early and middle stages and, consequently, was left without a finishing effort.

RACE 7: Civic Stakes (Listed) 1350m

  • Wouldnt It Be Nice – on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 4pm the Stewards gave permission for C Reith to replace R Hutchings as the rider of the gelding when it was established that R Hutchings would not be able to make the weight.
  •  Vergara – crowded on jumping by Wouldnt It Be Nice, which began awkwardly and shifted out. Over the final 200m had some difficulty obtaining clear running.
  • Oxford Poet – bumped shortly after the start by Vergara.
  • Office Bearer – approaching the first turn, when inclined to race keenly, was steadied to avoid the heels of Vergara, which was taken in by Oxford Poet (B Avdulla), which shifted in when not clear. B Avdulla was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is two lengths clear when shifting ground.
  • Marenostro – rider T Angland stated that he intended to find a position closer to the rail in the early stages, but when Snippets Land held its position to his inside, he was obliged to race three wide. He added that, approaching the first turn, as he improved up on the inside of Ninth Legion, he steadied to avoid the heels of that runner. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: Hyland Race Colours Handicap 1200m

  • Flamboyant Lass – raced keenly in the early stages and proved reluctant to settle. Over the final stages shifted out and had to be steadied away from the heels of Pioneering, which shifted in slightly.
  • Wine Tales – near the 300m had to be checked and shifted out across the heels of Magic Of Dreams to obtain clear running.
  • Magic Of Dreams – shortly after straightening attempted to improve into a run between Invienna and In A Wink where there was not sufficient room. As a consequence, Magic Of Dreams made contact with In A Wink and ultimately had to be checked when disappointed for the run and then was further hampered when crowded and taken in by Pioneering (App. J Innes Jr). Both C Reith and App. Innes were advised to exercise more care. Near the 100m Magic Of Dreams had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Sense And Reason, which shifted out slightly and, consequently, was not tested fully to the winning post. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Thud – held up in the early part of the straight and did not obtain clear running until approaching the 100m.

RACE 9: TAB More Than Just Winning Handicap 1500m

  • Brewery – shortly after the start was checked to avoid the heels of Avonaco, which was taken out by Nadacheva, which was in turn taken out by Kanji (C Reith). C Reith was advised to exercise more care. Inside the 100m was hampered when bumped by Thurston. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Vite Loni – near the 1400m blundered as it linked up with the course proper.
  • Embley – pulled hard throughout the early stages and near the 1000m was checked from the heels of Bold Circle.
  • Consign – held up in the early part of the straight and near the 300m raced in restricted room to the inside of Final Decision, which was taken in by Embley.
  • Nadacheva – near the 600m was briefly crowded by Wine 'N' Dine, which shifted in slightly. Near the 150m was hampered when crowded by Consign, which shifted in to obtain clear running to the inside of Gambler's Blues.
  • Avonaco – laid out in the straight.
  • Thurston – App.
  • Bold Circle – near the 50m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Brewery, which was taken out by Thurston.
  • Kanji – rider C Reith stated that the gelding, which was first up today, would be better served with the addition of blinkers and stepping up in distance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
