How the Gold Cup Was Won

Prince of Penzance - a horse with genuine stamina

Au Revoir took up the running with Le Roi and Precedence getting nice trails on the inside behind. The tempo was gentle in the early stages until the French import started to stretch out by the school to make sure his stamina was utilised.

As they reached the turn it looked like Au Revoir and Le Roi would fight it out, but they were no match for a late finishing burst.

Prince of Penzance, who has shown real stamina in his races to date tracked up through the pack and finished hard. He hit the line with real force reaching a new high mark for his career.

His staying record is very strong overall. He was simply out-sped behind Cooldini over the last furlong when last up to this distance range, in the Roy Higgins Quality. On that day he tracked up very well to the furlong and fought right to the line.

Gallopers with genuine stamina are few and far between. He is now qualified for the Cup, but just might lack the rating to sneak into the field.

Whether he sneaks into the big one or not, he is a Spring Galloper to follow.
