Race Day Review - Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Race Day at Rosehill Gardens

Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 10 May 2014

A good day of Autumn racing at Rosehill Gardens and the Hawkes and Anthony Cumming's teams were successful with up-and-coming gallopers. Zephyron (pictured above) has shown improvement every campaign and went to a new level to hold off I'm Imposing and win the Lord Mayor's Cup, while the promising As Needed took out Race 8 after missing the start clearly.

A race-by-race analysis of the day is provided for Rosehill Gardens, from the mounting yard to the finish. The complete guide from your team at the track.

All The Race Finishes

Race 1 SPORTINGBET JUVENILE STAYER

David Payne's two year old explodes down the straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Bomber Brown David Payne Jeff Lloyd 2 54.0
2 Standoubt Nick Olive Joshua Parr 5 56.5
3 Charming Lad Jason Coyle Ms Kathy O'Hara 1 54.5

Bomber Brown dominated the first race

In The Yard

All horses looked fairly well, with STANDOUBT just slightly hot in the warm conditions.

In The Running

BOMBER BROWN jumped to the front and controlled a SLOW TEMPO, from STANDOUBT who sat outside him in second. CHARMING LAD was a little keen and over-raced early in the race, before settling better in third behind the leader.

The Result

BOMBER BROWN (1st) pushed on for home from the 500m and cleared out over the latter stages in a strong staying performance. STANDOUBT (2nd) went with the winner until the 300m and then just battled fairly and CHARMING LAD (3rd) kept on quite well late.

The Interest

David Payne is very skilled at getting his young horses ready for staying contents and BOMBER BROWN looked primed for this event. He seems to have a nice efficient stride and really opened up late to stamp himself as a horse with good potential. STANDOUBT had every chance and it isn't clear if he gets a trip given his best run this campaign was over shorter at his first ever run. CHARMING LAD was quite a nice type in the yard and he has potential, while PROXY was disappointing. He looked awkward at times and is probably not the most reliable of prospects moving forward. - Follow BOMBER BROWN

Race 2 POWER ACCESS HANDICAP

All works out well for a Waller veteran

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Tromso Chris Waller Joshua Parr 1 59.0
2 Calvo Lee & Cherie Curtis Taylor Marshall 10 54.0
3 Scream Machine Robert Smerdon Christian Reith 3 57.0

Tromso took advantage of a quick start and made the race his own

In The Yard

TROMSO, SAID COM, SINGLE and CALVO all looked well. RUGGED CROSS seemed in good order, but it was noted he didn't have the power of some of the other sprinting types. EIGELSTEIN and FROZEN ROPE carried condition with improvement to come.

In The Running

TROMSO jumped very well from the inside and went to a clear lead before steadying and setting a SLOW TEMPO. CALVO moved up into 2nd and SAID COM got a nice trail in 3rd behind the leading pair. EARNEST ERNEST over-raced slightly at the back of the field.

The Result

TROMSO (1st) maintained his run and just held on late from CALVO (2nd), who kept on to the line. The best of the closers were SCREAM MACHINE (3rd - came from midfield) and EARNEST ERNEST (4th - ran on from the back).

The Interest

Josh Parr did a great job to make the most of TROMSO's quick beginning before saving some energy mid-race. The performance was good, but he will get even higher in the handicaps after this win and it will be hard to find another race that suited as much as this one did. EARNEST ERNEST has been going well of late and his late closing 4th indicated all was still in very good order. He was clearly the most powerful in the yard though, so perhaps he was flattered as the horse with the best top speed. Many of the field were looking for further, including SCREAM MACHINE. His performance, along with EIGELSTEIN's, indicated that this preparation would be a good one. RUGGED CROSS made a long run and he isn't the most impressive of types. He could be well placed on a tighter track. - Follow SCREAM MACHINE and EIGELSTEIN

Race 3 REXEL HANDICAP

A smart-looking colt streaks away from the pack

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Pinstripe Lane Leon & Troy Corstens Taylor Marshall 7 54.0
2 Elusive Runner John Sargent Jason Collett 5 54.0
3 Darci Magic Paul Murray Blake Shinn 10 57.0

Pinstripe lane was able to maintain a strong run to the line

In The Yard

A broad variety of types lined up for this event. SURGE AHEAD looked quite lean, perhaps tapering off in his campaign. MARMELO, TAKEWING, PINSTRIPE LANE, STELLARIZED and NOONAMEENA all looked well. SO CERTAIN was a bit stockier in comparison to some more athletic competitors.

In The Running

SURGE AHEAD rolled forward and set up an honest EVEN TEMPO. DARCI MAGIC and STELLARIZED raced just behind the leader. TAKEWING took charge of the rider just after the start and darted out wider, before joining the pack again having lost significant ground. At the 600m SURGE AHEAD built the tempo up and made a long run for home.

The Result

PINSTRIPE LANE (1st) built up strongly in the straight and finished off very well from ELUSIVE RUNNER (2nd) who also finished off full of running. DARCI MAGIC (3rd) fought on nearer to the inside.

The Interest

PINSTRIPE LANE looked quite a forward type in the yard with a nice staying frame. He seemed over the odds based on previous strong form around this distance and he remains a good prospect for the future. ELUSIVE RUNNER responded to heavy riding in the straight to hit the line, Jason Collett obviously aware of the fact he was riding a horse with the stamina to finish off. DARCI MAGIC perhaps lacked some power to win this time and he could be better suited on a more testing track where he can use his good athletic ability, rather than the dry Rosehill surface he encountered here . MARMELO, who is a stunning filly, doesn't seem to have the heart to compete at the moment and SURGE AHEAD probably deserves a break now. TAKEWING has to be forgiven after giving his jockey a torrid ride. - Follow PINSTRIPE LANE and ELUSIVE RUNNER - Forgive TAKEWING

Race 4 KEN CALLANDER FELLOWSHIP HANDICAP

A dashing win from the flashing 'poet'

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Oxford Poet Kim Waugh Taylor Marshall 8 54.0
2 Fare Well Clarry Conners Jason Collett 11 54.0
3 Black Revolver Chris Waller Jim Cassidy 1 54.0

Oxford Poet burnt the Rosehill turf from start to finish

In The Yard

Many looked well in the yard before this event. It was noted that BLACK REVOLVER lacked the power of some others. SABINO SPEED and KRAFTWERK seemed quite well and PAPILLON ROUGE was a touch fitter this time.

In The Running

OXFORD POET sped forward and set a GOOD TEMPO rolling along in the lead with the light weight. ROCKFORD settled in 2nd, while KRAFWERK and SABINO SPEED seemed uncomfortable inside horses and over-raced in the run.

The Result

OXFORD POET (1st) maintained a good run until the 50m mark where he started to tire, but sill had enough energy to hold on. FARE WELL (2nd) stormed home down the outside and BLACK REVOLVER (3rd) stayed on solidly closer to the rails.

The Interest

OXFORD POET was heavily backed and put in a very strong performance to make the running and hold on. The good rolling tempo set up by the winner resulted in all other on-pace horses struggling to finish off. Most noteworthy were KRAFTWERK and SABINO SPEED, who both looked to be nice types and resented racing inside horses in the run. FARE WELL and BLACK REVOLVER were both well placed to run on given the way the race panned out. Potentially BLACK REVOLVER would be better suited at a slightly longer trip on the future. - Follow OXFORD POET and BLACK REVOLVER - Forgive KRAFTWERK and SABINO SPEED

Race 5 WILSON ASSET MANAGEMENT HANDICAP

Strength prevails as a solid filly beats the speedsters

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Cradle Me David Pfieffer Sam Clipperton 9 58.5
2 Kristy Lee Chris Waller Jim Cassidy 3 57.0
3 Single Melody Joseph Pride Jason Collett 6 54.0

Cradle Me stormed home from the back

In The Yard

CENTREPET, CAESAR’S PRINCESS, DREAM EMPRESS, KRISTY LEE, WALK WITH ATTITUDE and REBEL DANCER all paraded well. CRADLE ME perhaps had some condition, but it was noted she is a stocky and compact type usually. VILLA SPLENDIDO was fine, but looked one of the lighter fillies in the yard, lacking the strength of others.

In The Running

SINGLE MELODY sped to the lead and was soon challenged by EMPRESS MILLY, who initially worked up three wide before getting to the position outside the leader. DREAM EMPRESS was also on-pace and these three mares ensured a GOOD TEMPO was set up.

The Result

CRADLE ME (1st) zoomed from second-last at the 400m to win easily on the line. KRISTY LEE (2nd) also kept on strongly from midfield, while SINGLE MELODY (3rd) held on for a place after running the first half of the race very quickly.

The Interest

EMPRESS MILLY did a lot of work early to push on and force a good tempo. This definitely made it tougher for all three on-pace horses and SINGLE MELODY did well to fight on for third. CRADLE ME's win was quite stunning though, and despite being helped by the tempo, she should have a good off-season campaign. She is a stocky type that used her strength to build up a long run down the Rosehill straight, so it might pay if David Pfieffer can find similar races at the track in the future. KRISTY LEE was solid, but she seemed to get all the breaks and is not the most genuine or reliable type. Jimmy Cassidy urged her up to the leader thinking victory was in her grasp. He would of got a shock when he looked over his shoulder at the 95m mark to see the winner sweeping past. - Follow CRADLE ME - Forgive SINGLE MELODY and EMPRESS MILLY

Race 6 FUJITSU AIR LORD MAYORS CUP

A handsome galloper out-points two Waller fighters

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Zephyron Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes Taylor Marshall 13 54.0
2 I'm Imposing Chris Waller Jim Cassidy 1 55.0
3 Secessio Bob Challis Christian Reith 3 54.5

Zephyron enjoyed the return to a dryer surface and stayed on right to the line

In The Yard

A professional bunch lined up in the yard for the race, with most looking well. ASCLEPIUS was ready to go and on his toes. MALUCKYDAY looked ok, but just seemed to continue to carry some condition. It must be a hard balancing act for Joe Pride to get the old boy fresh enough to sprint and fit enough to compete.

In The Running

MADAM NASH used the power in her 'sprinters frame' to push on and string the field out, building up a five length lead mid-race with LASER FLASH, ZEPHYRON and I'M IMPOSING in a group following the leader. The GOOD TEMPO resulted in a field that as spread out over more than twenty lengths. SACRED FLYER (over-raced slightly at times), MALUCKYDAY and KOBI SUN were all in a different race at the back of the field with THERESMUSICPLAYING in last place.

The Result

ZEPHYRON was kept well balanced by his rider and maintained a strong run to the line to just hold off I'M IMPOSING. These two horses had an exciting tussle down the straight, with SECESSIO (3rd) just behind, who loomed to win before tiring.

The Interest

A genuine tempo typically ensures a fair result and the top three performed well here. ZEPHYRON enjoyed being on a good track and used his superior strength to fight off the two smaller Waller stayers late. I'M IMPOSING ran well after being unlucky (stuck wide) at his previous run. He typically races best early in his campaign though and may be difficult to place fourth-up. SECESSIO enjoyed a good run in transit, but Christian Reith's decision to push him from midfield at the 600m to looming 3W at the 400m might not have been the best choice given the energy-sapping tempo. He tired late. Other runs of note came from the horses at the very back who had impossible margins to make up. SACRED FLYER didn't have the best of runs and could be forgiven, while KOBI SUN was not pushed out fully in the straight after getting way out of his ground. MALUCKYDAY was in that group also, he didn't finish off quite as well as the others and could be coming to the end of a great career. - Follow ZEPHYRON and SECESSIO - Forgive SACRED FLYER and KOBI SUN (in an easier race)

Race 7 CANDANA BATHROOMS HANDICAP

The Hawkes team polish makes the difference in a busy finish

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Forster Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes Taylor Marshall 12 55.0
2 Oakfield Commands Todd Howlett Sam Clipperton 2 59.5
3 Queen's Elect Joseph Pride Blake Shinn 4 56.0

Forster maintained his run after being trapped wide

In The Yard

SIR BERUS, FORSTER and YOU’LL NEVER looked very well in the yard, while QUEEN’S ELECT and REUNITE carried some condition. TIMELESS PRINCE was a bit lean in comparison to some of the other stronger sprinters in the field.

In The Running

KING COBIA bustled forward to the lead, from FORT SUMTER outside him in second. The favourite, FORSTER, was stuck out three wide on the pace and OAKFIELD COMMANDS had the box seat behind the leader. Overall, an EVEN TEMPO was set up. YOU'LL NEVER missed the start slightly and went back with SIR BERUS.

The Result

FORSTER (1st) maintained a good finish despite a wide run in transit, from OAKFIELD COMMANDS (2nd), who snuck up the inside. QUEEN'S ELECT (3rd) made a run from midfield to get a place and YOU'LL NEVER (4th) weaved through runners to just miss out on the top positions.

The Interest

A blanket finish can indicate a race with poor form and with eight runners finishing within 1.5 lengths of each other this race definitely fits into that profile. There may be a few you can pick out for the future though and first on that list would be FORSTER, who endured a tough run in transit and fought on bravely. Also, YOU'LL NEVER and SIR BERUS look very well this preparation and will enjoy 1400m races in the future, and QUEEN'S ELECT put in a good performance after looking to have improvement in the yard. MOUNT NEBO is better suited at Randwick than Rosehill and ran ok down the outside and similarly KING COBIA is a nuggetty type that was exposed down the long flat Rosehill straight. - Follow FORSTER, YOU'LL NEVER and SIR BERUS

Race 8 BLACKWOODS NEW CATALOGUE HANDICAP

A classy finish to an Autumn day of racing at Rosehill

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 As Needed Anthony Cummings Christian Reith 18 56.5
2 First Class Ticket Allan Denham Mr Lester Grace 7 58.5
3 Paederos David Payne Jeff Lloyd 9 57.5

As Needed flashed through the pack after missing the start

In The Yard

AS NEEDED was the stand-out in the yard, looking to be a very classy animal and a good prospect for the future. PERPLEXITY, STRACE and THE ALFONSO all paraded well, while TOFFLER had nice size and scope in comparison to the others in the yard. There were no horses that paraded poorly.

In The Running

PAEDEROS showed good natural speed to roll to the lead under a hold and set up an EVEN TEMPO. FIRST CLASS TICKET moved up to second and STRACE found the box seat in third, but over-raced slightly early in the race. DREAM FOLK was three wide for parts of the race in midfield and the favourite AS NEEDED was near the back on the rails after missing the start by a couple of lengths.

The Result

AS NEEDED (1st) stormed through the middle of a spread out pack of horses to win, from FIRST CLASS TICKET (2nd) and PAEDEROS (3rd) who kept on to the line.

The Interest

AS NEEDED was simply classier than this field and will go onto better things in the future. Just how good he is will be a puzzle to figure out when reading the race guide ahead of his next assignment. PAEDEROS put in a good performance and Jeff LLoyd's vigorous riding style didn't seem to agree with the sleek and athletic galloper. He looked likely to go close to winning the race until drifting out to the centre of the track from the 275m under riding. THE ALFONSO and DREAM FOLK both ran on quite well and CLEVER BOY was far from genuine in the run home, he still has his tricks. - Follow AS NEEDED
