Race Day Review - Saturday Racing at Rosehill Gardens

Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 28 June 2014

Chris Waller came to the track with a big team and left with four wins out of the eight races on a blustery day at Rosehill Gardens. A strong north-westerly headwind made the run home down the long Rosehill Gardens straight a stern test and only the strongest horses prevailed.

While the NZ trainer took the spoils for the most victories, the best performance of the day went to Scream Machine (pictured above) trained by Jason Coyle. The tall and muscular gelding defied the conditions and sustained a strong run down the middle of the straight to grab victory 50m from the post. His form suggests he is not the most consistent type, but this campaign has taken him to a new level including a strong performance in the Group One Doomben 10,000.

The most promising horse of the day, and a galloper that may have Group form on her resume in the future, was the winner of the two year old event Winx. She is a beautiful athletic filly that was far stronger than her rivals over the final furlong.

A race-by-race analysis of the day is provided from the mounting yard to the finish. The complete guide from your team at the track.

Race 1 TAB EARLY QUADDIE HANDICAP

Waller starts with a bit of Class

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Winx Chris Waller Jason Collett 1 56.0
2 Inz'n'out Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou Brenton Avdulla 6 59.0
3 Another Al Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Ms Winona Costin 7 55.5

Winx showed that she is a good filly

In The Yard

JOADJA paraded well, but WINX looked best and was much better suited to 1400m as an athletic type. WIN FOR LEVI was bigger than the rest, but a bit keen.

In The Running

WINX had a slowish jump, while INZ’N’OUT rolled to the lead and set an EVEN TEMPO. ANOTHER AL sat outside the leader and JOADJA drifted back to last.

The Result

WINX (1st) worked into space after being in a tight spot early in the straight and finished much too well late. INZ’N’OUT (2nd) was brave after leading and ANOTHER AL (3rd) kept on solidly after racing on the pace.

The Interest

WINX looked a much more efficient filly and a bit classier than the rest. The fact that she won at 1100m at her first start is a testament to her ability and bigger things are in store. ANOTHER AL was well weighted so perhaps was flattered, while INZ’N’OUT was honest again and looks a reliable type. Look for JOADJA over longer distances. Follow - WINX.

Race 2 THERACES.COM.AU HANDICAP

Tye Angland steers a tough guy home

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Abbasso Chris Waller Tye Angland 5 59.0
2 Black Revolver Chris Waller Jason Collett 8 56.5
3 Mamwaazel Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) Serg Lisnyy 2 59.0

Abbasso maintained a strong run to the line

In The Yard

A nice group of horses and the filly MAMWAAZEL presented best. IN A KNOT didn't parade as well as last start and ABOUTTOGOBANG lacked the power of others, a lighter athletic type.

In The Running

MAMWAAZEL jumped well and took advantage to lead. She gradually increased the tempo around the home turn, setting an EVEN TEMPO overall. COOLRING sat outside the lead and IN A KNOT got the box seat. ABOUTTOGOBANG jumped awkwardly and ended up further back than usual. ABBASSO and BLACK REVOLVER were at the back. MAMWAAZEL quickened nicely early in the straight.

The Result

ABBASSO (1st) came wider in the straight and made a strong run, sustaining a gap of a couple of lengths on BLACK REVOLVER (2nd), who came home nicely too. MAMWAAZEL (3rd) just tired slightly late.

The Interest

A Waller trifecta in the middle of an off-season that is being dominated by the Kiwi magician. ABBASSO is a tough horse that carried the weight well and is improving with racing. BLACK REVOLVER did an ok job running on from the back into the wind and will be suited to a little bit further in the future. He might be the one with a bit more upside this campaign than most others. MAMWAAZEL put in a very nice performance again after pushing on into the strong headwind. She is a classy filly, but she might be coming to the end of her prep soon. IN A KNOT didn't look as good in the yard as last time and was only fair after getting the box seat run, and ABOUTOGOBANG didn't have much go right and didn't race genuinely in the straight. He could bounce back in an easier grade. Follow BLACK REVOLVER.

Race 3 SYDNEY SPRING CARNIVAL ON SALE NOW HANDICAP

James Cummings gets an early wedding gift

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Romantic Moon Bart & James Cummings Blake Shinn 3 57.5
2 Adorabeel Joseph Pride Sam Clipperton 8 54.0
3 Express Power Kris Lees James McDonald 4 58.0

Romantic Moon led from start to finish

In The Yard

ROMANTIC MOON and SENSE AND REASON paraded best in the yard, both looking fit and well. ACAPELA and FOREVER CRAZY were more robust than the other short-course types. ZUCCHERINA was in good shape, while ADORABEEL was just a bit unsettled.

In The Running

A nice even jump. ROMANTIC MOON went to the front and set an EVEN TEMPO, while ADORABEEL lacked early speed and went back. ZUCCHERINA was three wide early and moved up to settle outside the lead. ADORABEEL and SENSE AND REASON started a run from the back at the home turn.

The Result

ROMANTIC MOON (1st) kept rolling strongly down the straight to win well. ADORABEEL (2nd) finished strongly late once she found clear running room and EXPRESS POWER (3rd) sustained a solid run.

The Interest

ROMANTIC MOON was perhaps a level above these and further distances hold no fears in the future. The timing couldn't have been any better for James Cummings with his wedding only a matter of days away. ADORABEEL has talent and will improve when she learns to settle better and gets more comfortable in and around horses. Once again she seemed to resent racing in a tight spot half way down the straight. SENSE AND REASON is a rangy type and the wind may have played its part as her run tapered. Don't dismiss ACAPELA on the run today, she will be much better on a rain affected track at Randwick than this dry and flat Rosehill surface. FOREVER CRAZY hit the line late so looks to be in order for a good performance over a longer distance soon. Follow ROMANTIC MOON.

Race 4 SIGNIFICANT STAKES

Waterhouse produces a tough kiwi

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Pajaro Peter & Paul Snowden James McDonald 10 59.0
2 The Alfonso Chris Waller Tye Angland 3 59.0
3 Tarangower Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich Sam Clipperton 9 59.0

Pajaro was strong to the line

In The Yard

THE ALFONSO, ENORMOUS HONOUR, SUN FORCE, OFF THE RAILS, TARANGOWER and PAJARO all paraded well. SKY CLIP lacked the power of others and CASINO DANCER's winter coat had got quite thick. EL DOUTE didn't impress in the yard, lacking muscle and condition.

In The Running

SKY CLIP went to the lead and PAJARO rolled up and sat outside the pace. An honest EVEN TEMPO was set. SUN FORCE held its spot in 3rd on the rails. EL DOUTE and CASINO DANCER went back to last.

The Result

PAJARO (1st) maintained a strong run in the straight to win well, from THE ALFONSO (2nd) who ran on, but was visibly tired over the last 50m. TARANGOWER (3rd) kept on honestly and ENORMOUS HONOUR (4th) made his run with THE ALFONSO, but couldn't sprint as well.

The Interest

PAJARO looks like a forceful type and he really pushed on into the wind for a good victory. He seems to enjoy the dry surfaces and can be followed in the future. THE ALFONSO was solid enough and given he didn't really finish off here, a shorter distance would be better in the future. TARANGOWER did well 3rd-up and could have some more improvement, while EL DOUTE paraded poorly and doesn't look to be shining in the winter months. It was a tough ask for the young horse SUN FORCE, who shouldn't be dismissed as a prospect for the future. Follow PAJARO.

Race 5 PERFECTION FRESH WINTER CUP

An off-season staying race is Waller's domain

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Secessio Bob Challis Tye Angland 3 54.5
2 Hoylonny Chris Waller Kerrin McEvoy 8 55.0
3 Mulaqen Chris Waller Jason Collett 4 54.0

Secessio led home a Chis Waller First 4

In The Yard

All horses looked well enough in the yard, with no clear standouts. PERMIT was a stocky type as usual, less athletic than the rest.

In The Running

SIR BIGGLESWORTH rolled over to lead from PERMIT and they went slowly in the early stages. HOYLONNY was back early, but made a mid-race move (1000m mark) to take the lead, setting up a STOP-START TEMPO.

The Result

SECESSIO (1st) worked home best to win by a small margin over HOYLONNY (2nd) who maintained a steady run down the straight. MULAQEN (3rd) pushed through a gap and PERMIT (4th) stayed on fairly. DESTINY’S KISS was running on nicely when he got badly blocked and then checked at the 275m mark.

The Interest

The changing tempo of the race made it a bit of a tactical event. At the top of the straight, SECESSIO, MULAQEN and DESTINY'S KISS were all travelling ok, but there wasn't much room for them to make their runs in a tightly packed field. SECESSIO and MULAQEN found small gaps, while DESTINY'S KISS had the door closed hard him and can be forgiven. It was interesting that SECESSIO drifted so much in the market. ZABEELIONAIRE looked like he may have reacted to the strong wind and was poor, while SIR BIGGLESWORTH needs a lower grade and wet track at this stage of his career. Forgive DESTINY'S KISS.

Race 6 NATSKI HANDICAP

Group 1 form overwhelms the field

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Scream Machine Robert Smerdon Tye Angland 10 56.5
2 Bagman Chris Waller Serg Lisnyy 6 58.5
3 Single Craig Carmody Ms Winona Costin 2 54.0

Scream Machine swept home from last

In The Yard

EIGELSTEIN didn't parade as impressively as last time. SCREAM MACHINE and SINGLE looked well and all others paraded ok. BAGMAN has had a nice shine to his coat at all three runs this campaign.

In The Running

TROMSO jumped very quickly again and rolled along for the first part of the race before dropping anchor. He then pushed on from the 650m again, setting up a STOP-START TEMPO overall. SCREAM MACHINE went back to last.

The Result

SCREAM MACHINE (1st) made a good run down the outside with SINGLE (3rd) and just prevailed. BAGMAN (2nd) pushed through late and hit the line after being outsprinted at the home turn.

The Interest

It was a very strong win from SCREAM MACHINE and the runs of BAGMAN and SINGLE weren't bad either. BAGMAN looked like the unlucky runner, but the other two place getters were exposed to the wind right down the straight. Not many other long swooping runs were made throughout the day. EIGELSTEIN didn't impress in the yard and underperformed, which could indicate he is at the end of his prep. MERLIN MUSTANG will be better suited to a race with a more even tempo and a wet track in the future. Follow SCREAM MACHINE.

Race 7 TAB REWARDS HANDICAP

Tye Angland lifts another Waller runner

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Done Nothin' Wrong Matthew Williams Tye Angland 10 55.0
2 Saigon Tea Chris Waller Jason Collett 5 54.0
3 Animoso Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes Kerrin McEvoy 1 54.0

Done Nothin' Wrong just kept kicking to the line

In The Yard

An even group of horses in the yard. It was noted that TOO HI TEK and ANIMOSO were 'no-frills' types that lacked the power of the others. TOHUNGA was a little unsettled.

In The Running

TOHUNGA pushed on to lead and ABSALON worked up outside to 2nd. The two of them duelled mid-race and set a GOOD TEMPO. DONE NOTHIN’ WRONG had a trail a few lengths back in 3rd. SENTA DESERT was slow to begin again and went back with SAIGON TEA.

The Result

ANIMOSO (3rd) loomed up to take a narrow lead at the 250m and DREAM FOLK (4th) made a strong run at the same time. The two of them looked they would fight it out, but both runs tapered and DONE NOTHIN’ WRONG (1st) kept kicking on the rails. SAIGON TEA (2nd) pulled out late and ran on to just miss.

The Interest

The leaders should be forgiven such poor runs after going too quickly. ABSALON in particular did a good job to out fight TOHUNGA in their own two horse battle. TOO HI TEK was a bit unlucky and could have finished closer, but he did have the charmed run on the rails following a testing tempo. DREAM FOLK looked like he was going to win easily and the wind might have taken its toll on the lean and athletic runner. DONE NOTHIN’ WRONG and SAIGON TEA were both very solid to the line and seem like genuine performers with more to give this campaign. Follow DREAM FOLK. Forgive ABSALON.

Race 8 TOOHEYS NEW HANDICAP

The sprinters line up against mother nature

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Skip Town Tim Martin Kerrin McEvoy 8 58.5
2 Wouldnt It Be Nice Paul Perry Serg Lisnyy 10 54.5
3 No Bad Blood Kim Waugh Brenton Avdulla 14 55.0

Skip Town ran home best in the cold and windy conditions

In The Yard

A wind storm had gone through Rosehill Gardens before the event and the temperature dropped noticeably. FIREBALL and CASUAL CHOICE were a bit flighty in the strong wind gusts. NO BAD BLOOD paraded best, with a nice shine to his coat. All others looked ok.

In The Running

NO BAD BLOOD jumped best and rolled across to the lead and set an EVEN TEMPO. EARNEST ERNEST and CLEANSING ALE were slow to begin and went right back to last. INSIDE JOB couldn't get cover and was stuck three wide, with SKIP TOWN getting the trail behind him. FIREBALL just couldn't muster his usual early speed.

The Result

NO BAD BLOOD (3rd) drifted wider and kicked well, but SKIP TOWN (1st) and WOULDN'T IT BE NICE (2nd) ran on too strongly down the outside.

The Interest

There will be a number of forgives in this one given very windy and cold conditions, the problem is knowing which ones they are! The packing field and fact that most horses looked somewhat uncomfortable in the run home means that there could be some form turnarounds in the future. A good example was CASUAL CHOICE, who had lots to give at the top of the home straight when a big inside run opened up. A couple of awkward strides later and the wind in his face left him just battling to the line. SKIP TOWN and WOULDN'T IT BE NICE produced strong runs and INSIDE JOB battled on bravely after a wide run. NO BAD BLOOD did look very well in the yard and performed up to the way he paraded. EARNEST ERNEST was ridden very quietly for luck, and while those tactics may have suited the horse, they didn't give much hope for his backers. A tricky race to analyse. Forgive INSIDE JOB, CASUAL CHOICE, EARNEST ERNEST and FIREBALL (didn't seem to have his mind on the job).
