The classic three-year old race over the testing 2500m and surprisingly no fillies are here to take on the boys. Winners of the race need a mix of class, stamina and enough finishing speed to break away from the pack at the end. Looking across the runners, there are no stand-out types though. Gai Waterhouse's chunky colt Hampton Court clearly brings the best form after winning the Spring Champion last start. There appears to be stamina in his blood (related to Makybe Diva), but there are a few risks that he won't be able to produce his best away from Randwick. Outside of the favourite, the form-lines are very even. Moonovermanhattan is the only challenger that has similar ratings, but is a risk at the distance, while Atmosphere, Bondeiger and Preferment all have the credentials to chase home gamely at the end. Based on type alone, the strong looking Royal Standing, San Padre, Nozomi and Gouldian all rate a chance. Firehouse Rock and Magicool both are good enough too, but perhaps have a few too many questions over the distance. It may no be the best renewal on paper, but don't be surprised if a future champ stands up to be counted here.
