The big Brisbane Carnival races commence with the Group One BTC Cup over 1200m. Grand sprinter Buffering has chased some very good horses home throughout his career and there was no shame in coming third to the in-form sprinter Lankan Rupee in the TJ Smith last start. It was definitely the type of effort that could flatten even the bravest of warhorses though, so perhaps keep an eye on both the market and the mounting yard. If there are any chinks in his armour the 'Boom brothers' will be right there challenging for the title. Spirit of Boom has a turn-of-foot that could be used to good effect in the small field and Temple of Boom got a new lease of life last start under the urgings of Tegan Harrison, who gets the chance to ride here again. The speedsters Snitzerlad and Tiger Tees are sure to make their presence felt and the latter in particular has been fighting hard in all his recent starts. Some very tough and genuine types mixing it over the short-course is a recipe for a stirring last 100m. Can the top-weight hold the rest at bay?
