A nice field of three year-olds come together at Set Weights for this year's running of The Frank Packer Plate. The weight scale clearly favours the classier horses and Hooked has proven very competitive against the best in recent Group 1 events. He loomed up in The Derby and looked a real threat, only to go down just over a length when his run plateaued. That is clearly the strongest form into this and his chances are undeniable. The other proven Group performers are Pheidon, who won strongly at The Valley in Group 2 grade two starts ago, and the enigmatic Arabian Gold, who bounced back to form on her favoured heavy track last start. She brings a different form-line as the only filly in the race and while she opened up as favourite, the challenge will be proving her form can extend to dry tracks. Of the others Equator will be looking to recapture his good Spring form and Malice looks to be suited at the distance. The pace could be slow here with Pheidon looking to lead on his own, a good chance horses midfield or better could be advantaged, or those with a good sprint. A nice puzzle to sort through.
