A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Bashford stated that he was not disappointed with the performance of Ocean Grand, which was obliged to carry 61 kilograms. He added in his view the gelding may now be looking for races over a longer distance and the plan would be to step it up in distance at its next race start.

RACE 7: Task Retail Theo Marks Stakes (Group 2) 1300m

  • Snoopy – began awkwardly.
  • Old North – slow to begin. Rider B Avdulla stated stated that, although the tempo was genuine in the early and middle stages, his mount was still inclined to race keenly in the run and he attributed this to the main reason for the horse failing to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Southern Legend – held up for clear running rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight and near the 350m made contact with Vashka when endeavouring to improve into a narrow run between that runner and Oxford Poet. Rider T Clark stated after following Savoureux, a runner which he felt was a good chance in the event, he was then held up on the heels of that runner when it did not improve as he had anticipated. He added he was then obliged to come to the outside of Savoureux in an endeavour to find clear running and was badly held up on the heels of Cana and then Alucinari until approaching the 100m. T Clark further stated he then shifted back to the inside of Cana to obtain clear running, but again was hampered over the concluding stages when Cana shifted back in, crowding his running and as a consequence Dixie Blossoms went to the line without being tested.
  • Fine Mist – overraced in the early stages. Near the 900 Ravi (K McEvoy) shifted in, resulting in Savoureux being taken in onto Magic Alibi, causing Magic Alibi to be steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Nancy. In this incident Magic Alibi shifted out, resulting in Savoureux being taken out and crowding Fine Mist across the running of Cana, which resulted in Fine Mist having to be checked and also Alucinari being hampered. Whilst the Stewards accepted the tempo of the event had contributed to the interference, K McEvoy was advised to exercise more care.
  • Nancy – held up in the early part of the straight.
  • Pearls – throughout the race travelled wide without cover.
  • Savoureux – rider H Bowman stated, with the perceived lack of early tempo, he positioned his mount a little more forward than it would normally have settled and when the tempo quickened on straightening he was left flat-footed. He added he then raced in restricted room for some distance in the early part of the straight between Cana and Heavens Above (T Angland) and when Heavens Above shifted out near the 200m he was then obliged to steady his mount. He further added that over the concluding stages he could not fully test his mount when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Pearls. T Angland was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground.
  • Cana – when questioned regarding his riding and in particular the reason his mount was caught wide throughout the event, rider J Ford stated his instructions were to take up a position on the pace and preferably obtain cover. He added that when caught wide in the early stages he contemplated riding forward to take up a position outside the lead, but when his mount was not travelling well enough to do so and in particular when Ravi held its position to his inside, he then was obliged to remain racing wide for the remainder of the event.
