The Cup - The Winning Moves
Published: 04 Nov 2014
Backing the winner of the Melbourne Cup is as much about making the right decision as it is about getting the best info. Many will be cheering a big win on the big day, while others will be lamenting the bet that 'could have been'.
The Race Guide team has a look at the betting moves the winners made. Six horses that were a good bet.
Protectionist / $8 to $8
Result - 1st
Many who backed this galloper would have carefully watched his efforts overseas. The Herbert Power run in Australia was impressive, but it was the strong finishing surge he showed in France and Germany that was the biggest indicator of a win this dominant.
Added to the fact that he was simply the best 'type' in the race, there were enough pointers to put him on top.
Red Cadeaux / $21 to $21
Result - 2nd (4 lengths)
Followers of this British warhorse needed faith to out the money on this time. His recent form wasn't strong, but his performances in Australia have been exceptional. The expected fast pace was in his favour and he showed his staying quality again.
Coming second in the Melbourne Cup three times is almost unbelievable. A great effort.
Who Shot Thebarman / $20 to $21
Result - 3rd (4.5 lengths)
Some analysis of the Caulfield Cup would have made sure his followers didn't rule him out. The tight turn proved too tricky for the big galloper on that occasion and he was always going to be suited to the big stretches of Flemington.
To have Waller as your trainer is no handicap too. It won't be long until the Kiwi magician claims his first Melbourne Cup.
Other runs that were 'good bets' without being winning bets were.
Signoff / $7 to $8.5 to $8
Result - 4th (6 lengths)
He came into the race solidly, but just couldn't lift when the winner challenged. In the end Red Cadeaux simply had more stamina.
Willing Foe / $26 to $31
Result 5th (7 lengths)
As for Signoff above, he made a strong run after getting a good trail in the race. Just couldn't lift over the last furlong.
Araldo $21 - $21
Result - 7th (9.3 lengths)
You wouldn't have been disappointed in his effort, but when you saw him hang in the straight (as he often does) you would have known your money was gone. For a second he looked like he might have been in the finish.
