Summary of Races

RACE 1: Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes (Listed) 1000m

  • Kanga's Eye – The Stewards opened an inquiry in respect to the reason the filly missed the start. After taking evidence from starter Mr P Svenson, it was established that Kanga's Eye was fractious in the barriers and was being assisted by its barrier attendant. Shortly after Kanga's Eye commenced to stand correctly and the start was effected. Simultaneously the filly then became fractious, got its head down and consequently missed the start (3L) while still in the care of the barrier attendant. Under the provisions of AR134A as Kanga's Eye had finished in second place, the filly was deemed to be a runner. Trainer Mr A Cummings was advised that a warning would be placed on the filly. Held up for clear running until near the 150m.
  • Jorda – began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with Greater Good. Shifted out under pressure over the final 100m.
  • Grasslands – slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Mystic Empire – shortly after the start was steadied when crowded for room by Chain Of Fools (A Hyeronimus), which shifted in when not clear. A Hyeronimus was reprimanded under AR137(a).
  • Didn't Mention It – raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Approaching the 200m Madame Moustache improved into a run between Didn't Mention It and Chain Of Fools. A short distance later Chain Of Fools (A Hyeronimus) then shifted in abruptly, resulting in Madame Moustache being initially crowded and shifting in away from Chain Of Fools, making contact with Didn't Mention It, which blundered, was severely checked and became badly unbalanced. Stewards found that the racing manners of Chain Of Fools and Madame Moustache were principally the cause of the interference suffered by Didn't Mention It, however A Hyeronimus was advised in similar circumstances he must make every endeavour to ensure he corrects his mounts as soon as they commence to shift ground and cause tightening to other runners. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Chain Of Fools – raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Madame Moustache – held up for clear running until near the 200m.
  • Lucky Louie – approaching the winning post was unable to be ridden out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Jorda which, after initially shifting out under pressure, was then corrected by its rider and shifted back in.

RACE 2: Newgate Breeders' Plate (Listed) 1000m

  • Medal Kun – began awkwardly and made contact with the hindquarter of Misty Lad. Passing the 100m was checked when Piracy (J McDonald) shifted in acutely when weakening. J McDonald was advised to exercise care.
  • Misty Lad – began awkwardly. Overraced in the early and middle stages.
  • Bowerman – overraced in the early stages.
  • Thy Kingdom Come – crowded on jumping between Condor Heroes and Piracy, which began awkwardly and shifted in. Inside the 200m was hampered on two occasions when taken out by Opulentus.
  • The Mission – slow to begin. Rider C Williams stated that the colt was stirred up in its preliminary and, after being slow to begin, he was reluctant to ride his mount along in the early stages having regard to its pre-race mannerisms. He added he was unable to hold his position in the early part of the straight to the inside of Invader and when he had some concerns in respect to its action he did not persevere in testing it in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Stable representative Mr S Perry reported The Mission will now be spelled.
  • Spencer – raced wide without cover throughout. The colt, which was giving ground, was steadied approaching the 100m when Invader (C Brown) shifted out under pressure. C Brown was advised to exercise more care.
  • Opulentus – inclined to hang out making the home turn. The colt which was having difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight, was hampered near the 300m between Thy Kingdom Come and Spencer, which shifted out away from Khan, which also shifted out.
  • Piracy – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider J McDonald stated from his wide draw he was able to take up a position outside the lead, but in his view the colt raced too keenly in the run, into a strong head wind and consequently gave ground in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr D Beadman advised Piracy would now be spelled.

RACE 3: APN Outdoor Craven Plate (Group 3) 2000m

  • No report.

RACE 4: TAB Dulcify Quality (Listed) 1600m

  • Our Belisa – on jumping was bumped by Hessdalen. Raced wide without cover.
  • Octavian Augustus – overraced in the early and middle stages. Near the 200m the colt, which was laying out, was briefly tightened for room by Hessdalen (G Schofield), which shifted in. G Schofield was advised to exercise more care.
  • Calabasas – rider B Avdulla stated his mount was able to comfortably take up a position outside the early leader Hessdalen and particularly in the middle stages was able to obtain favourable slow sections. He added when placed under pressure in the straight his mount did not quicken and in his view was somewhat disappointing. B Avdulla said the only explanations he could offer for today's performance was Calabasas was carrying 59 kilograms, was up in grade and may not have run out a strong 1600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be mildly lame in the near-foreleg. Trainer Mrs K Waugh advised that Calabasas had pleased her since its last start at Newcastle on 16 September 2016 and had displayed no signs of lameness. Mrs Waugh agreed with the assessment of B Avdulla and was advised a veterinary clearance must be provided prior to Calabasas racing again.
  • Nemrud – when questioned regarding his riding of the colt, rider T Clark stated he had no specific instructions, but anticipated taking up a forward position with cover. He added his mount was able to obtain a position behind the early leaders, whereby it travelled comfortably on a slow tempo. T Clark further stated he followed Calabasas, one of the favoured runners, into the race and expected that runner to provide him with a favourable trail into the event and, particularly bearing in mind Our Belisa had had a tough run three wide with no cover, he anticipated that he would be able to improve to the outside of Calabasas soon after straightening. He said when Calabasas commenced to weaken soon after straightening he was then held up on the heels of that runner for some distance and as a consequence did not obtain clear running until inside the 200m, whereby his mount finished the race off strongly once it obtained clear running.

RACE 5: The Star Roman Consul (Group 2) 1200m

  • Mount Panorama – slow to begin.
  • Astern – When questioned regarding his riding of the colt in the early stages, J McDonald stated he was under specific instructions to ensure his mount obtained cover soon after the start, as the colt has a tendency to overrace without cover. He added these instructions were consistent with the way he had been instructed to ride the colt at its most recent starts. He said, after commencing well, to comply with his instructions he immediately commenced to restrain his mount to ensure he obtained a position on the back of Flash Fibian and as he attempted to do so Astern was inclined to race keenly and it took some time for him to obtain a position with cover. J McDonald further stated, after obtaining cover near the 1000m, Astern relaxed comfortably at the tail of the field and when Flash Fibian did not improve into the event he was obliged to shift to that runner's outside leaving the 500m to commence his run. Trainer Mr J O'Shea confirmed the instructions issued and advised that Astern has been ridden in a similar manner at its most recent starts and the first 100m were critical to ensure the gelding obtained cover and relaxed. He added that when the colt raced more forward in the Kindergarten Stakes on 2 April 2016 he was of the view that, although successful on that occasion, it was much less effective when it was ridden in a forward position and in the circumstances of today's race, it was not a viable option to take up a position in advance of Flash Fibian, which was positioned to his inside. Mr O'Shea further stated that, whilst accepting the tempo of the event disadvantaged backmarkers, having regard to the colt's racing pattern, he was satisfied with the manner in which J McDonald had carried out the instructions.

RACE 6: Sydney Airport Flight Stakes (Group 1) 1600m

  • Global Glamour – raced keenly in the early and middle stages. When questioned regarding the filly leading today, T Clark confirmed his instructions were if the filly commenced well to try and take up a forward position, but not specifically lead. He added when his mount jumped well today he was able to hold the lead without having to pressure his mount in the early stages. Co-trainer Mr A Bott confirmed the instructions and added, as notified by the Stewards on 17 September 2016, the instructions today were consistent with those issued on that day that it was the intention to have the filly more forward. He added on that occasion Global Glamour had missed the start and today was assisted with the addition of a barrier blanket, which in his view had aided the filly in commencing better and consequently being able to take up the lead.
  • Awoke – bumped with Skylight Glow at the start. Rider B Avdulla stated the only explanation he could offer for today's performance was that the filly was not comfortable on today's firmer surface and in his view is much better suited on a track with more give in it. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr C Waller concurred with the views of B Avdulla and undertook to report back on the condition of Awoke subsequent to the race.
  • Skylight Glow – bumped with Awoke at the start.
  • Yankee Rose – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly lost its off-fore plate in running.

RACE 7: TAB Epsom Handicap (Group 1) 1600m

  • Le Romain – on Thursday, 29 September 2016 trainer Mr K Lees advised Racing NSW Stewards that the gelding had suffered a minor swelling to the near-side of its neck following a routine intramuscular treatment on Wednesday, 28 September 2016. Le Romain was inspected when it arrived on course by Racing NSW Senior Official Veterinarian Dr C Suann and passed fit to start. Shortly after the start was bumped on the hindquarter and became unbalanced.
  • Vanbrugh – slow to begin.
  • Hauraki – on jumping was crowded by Dibayani, which began awkwardly and shifted in. In this incident Hauraki blundered and lost additional ground.
  • Mighty Lucky – began awkwardly. Overraced in the early and middle stages.
  • McCreery – shortly after the start was hampered when Le Romain shifted out.
  • Torgersen – hampered shortly after the start between McCreery and Fabrizio. M Zahra, rider of Palentino, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Torgersen, resulting in that runner having to be checked. M Zahra's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 9 October 2016 and to expire on Friday, 21 October 2016, on which day he may ride.
  • Palentino – inclined to overrace throughout the event and making the home turn hung out and proved difficult to ride. Trainer Mr D Weir stated the only excuses he could offer for today's performance were that the horse had not appreciated racing the Sydney way of going and, secondly, may not have also appreciated racing in blinkers for the first time. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr Weir undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Palentino subsequent to the race and indicated that he would jump the horse out prior to its next scheduled start in the Emirates Stakes on Saturday, 29 October 2016.
  • Fabrizio – laid in in the straight. When questioned regarding his riding of the gelding, in particular the fast sections that were set by the gelding in the early and middle stages of the event, rider J Victoire stated his instructions were to take up a forward position and he had anticipated leading. He added, after obtaining the lead in the early stages, his mount commenced to race keenly and for some distance between the 1200m and the 1000m he restrained his mount in and endeavour to have it come back underneath him. He said that when he formed the view that his mount was responding adversely to his attempts to restrain, he allowed the gelding to stride forward after the 1000m in order to attempt to have it relax, however this resulted in Fabrizio then increasing the tempo and as a consequence the gelding failed to finish the race off. After considering the evidence, including sectional times which verified that the first 1000m today was run at 0.94 seconds faster than when Fabrizio was successful at Randwick on 17 September 2016, Stewards advised J Victoire that in their view he had erred between the 1000m and the 600m by not continuing to attempt to restrain his mount in an endeavour not to set a fast tempo and in the circumstances he should have made more effort to continue to restrain his mount throughout that stage of the event. Cotrainer Mr A Bott confirmed the instructions were to attempt to lead today, as is usual, and agreed that the gelding had set too quick a tempo throughout the middle stages and consequently was left without a finishing effort, however nonetheless Mr Bott expressed general satisfaction with the manner in which Fabrizio had been ridden today. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. An inquiry into J Victoire's use of the whip in the straight was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
  • Sons Of John – when questioned regarding the performance, rider G Boss stated, whilst he enjoyed a nice position behind a quick tempo, he believed when the gelding lost its left front plate after about the 1000m, from this point on he felt the action of Sons Of John deteriorated and for this reason he did not persist in riding the gelding out in the straight. He said in his opinion Sons Of John felt jarred up returning to scale, a view which expressed to trainer Mr J Attard after the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its nearfore plate in running. Trainer Mr J Attard advised that in his view Sons Of John was not suited when ridden forward in a fast run race. He added that Sons Of John would now be freshened and he would assess the gelding before deciding on whether or not to continue on with its preparation. Mr Attard was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Sons Of John racing again. The progress of the gelding will be followed up with the stable in the days subsequent.

RACE 8: McGrath Estate Agents Metropolitan (Group 1) 2400m

  • Magic Hurricane – at approximately 7am this morning Stewards were notified that J McDonald was unable to ride the gelding at 54.5 kilograms and subsequently approved T Clark to be substituted as the rider. J McDonald was fined the sum of $400 under AR120(b). Rider T Clark stated the only explanation he could offer for today's performance was the gelding is better suited on softer tracks. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Sense Of Occasion – raced wide without cover, before obtaining a position nearer the rail near the 1200m. Rider C Brown was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(i) for using the whip on consecutive occasions prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty Stewards took into consideration the totality of whip use by C Brown in the straight.
  • Antonio Guiseppe – slow to begin. Shortly after the start was steadied when Sir John Hawkwood shifted in. For a short distance passing the 1600m commenced to race keenly.
  • Junoob – began awkwardly and then shortly after was hampered when Amexed shifted in.

  • Allergic – on straightening shifted out and made contact with Magic Hurricane.
  • Sacred Master – inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.
  • Storm The Stars – rider B Avdulla could offer no excuse for the performance today, indicating that the horse travelled well in the lead, but was under pressure soon after straightening. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame behind, requiring treatment. Trainer Mr C Waller was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Storm The Stars trialling. The condition of Storm The Stars will be followed up with the Waller stable in the days subsequent.
  • Who Shot Thebarman – rider H Bowman was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on six occasions prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty Stewards took into consideration the totality of whip strikes by H Bowman in the straight.

RACE 9: Santos Coffee Premiere Stakes (Group 2) 1200m

  • Howmuchdoyouloveme – on Thursday, 29 September 2016 Racing NSW Chief Investigator Mr N Hayward reported to Stewards that during routine inspections it was established the gelding had swelling to its off-side neck in the jugular region and as a consequence had a clay poultice applied to the region. Trainer Mr C Karakatsanis advised the swelling was due to a routine blood that was taken from the gelding on Monday, 26 September 2016 and, acting on the advice of his veterinarian, had applied the clay poultice to Howmuchdoyouloveme. He added that a blood profile had revealed a marginally elevated white cell count and as a consequence Stewards provided approval in accordance with AR178AB to have an additional blood sample taken from the gelding on Friday 30 September 2016, the results of which established that the white cell count had returned to within normal parameters. Howmuchdoyouloveme was inspected by Mr Karakatsanis's stable veterinarian Dr D Garth prior to 7.30 this morning and was inspected when it arrived on course by Racing NSW Senior Official Veterinarian Dr C Suann, who passed the gelding fit to start. At a subsequent inquiry Mr Karakatsanis was fined the sum of $600 under AR140(a)(ii)(b) for failing to report to the Stewards as soon as practicable a treatment or condition that may have impacted upon a horse's performance in a race.
  • Takedown – blundered on jumping. Brushed with Danish Twist due to both horses shifting ground near the 200m.

  • Danish Twist – began awkwardly. Brushed with Takedown due to both horses shifting ground near the 200m. Briefly held up in the early part of the straight.

  • Good Project – held up for clear running until near the 200m.
  • Famous Seamus – near the 150m was tightened for room by Good Project which, after improving into a narrow run inside Howmuchdoyouloveme (App. S Clenton), was then taken in by that runner. App. Clenton was advised to exercise more care.
