He said in his view Torgersen is better suited on a more forgiving track and did not run out a strong 1600m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was asked to report back on the progress of Torgersen subsequent to the race.
  • Zin Zan Eddie – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding, which weakened in the straight, to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.

Raced keenly in the middle stages and for some distance near the 600m was restrained from the heels of Farah. When questioned regarding his riding in the early stages and as to whether there was an opportunity to obtain a position on the back of the winner, Eckstein, J Collett stated that his instructions had been to endeavour to hold an on pace position, but after travelling a short distance, when he was of the view the tempo was reasonably fast, he elected to maintain a position on the back of Farah rather than shifting towards the fence and following Eckstein. He added when Farah then allowed Man Of Peace to cross in the middle stages his mount was then shuffled further back than he had intended to settle and, when Farah then was unable to improve when held up making the home turn and again in the early part of the straight, he was also held up, before shifting to the outside of Nic's Vendetta inside the 400m to obtain clear running.

  • Magicus – rider J Collett stated that in the early stages he elected to shift to the fence to follow the favourite, Bullrush. He added when Bullrush did not improve as he had expected making the home turn, after being held up on the back of that runner, he elected to shift to the outside of Bullrush and on the back of Moher. He said that he was then held up behind Moher for some distance and, after attempting a run between Moher and Royal Tudor near the 200m, he was obliged to steady his mount when that run closed. In this incident Magicus was accidentally struck across the nose by the whip of C Reith, rider of Royal Tudor. J Collett further stated that he was then unable to test his mount until inside the final stages. J Collett pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137(b) for having failed to ride Magicus out approaching the end of the race. Having regard to J Collett's excellent record, he was fined the sum of $200.

Co-trainer Mr A Bott advised Stewards the gelding had pleased the stable since its 2nd placing in the Port Macquarie Cup on 2 October 2016 and had received no treatment leading into today's event. The relevant section of the track was inspected by Stewards, where there was deemed to be nothing untoward in respect to the surface. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes agreed with the assessment of App. Jennings and advised the Stewards that the gelding had pleased leading into today's race, however, in light of today's performance would be spelled. App. Innes Jr said, as he commenced to take hold of his mount, it got its head up, overraced and would not settle, which ultimately resulted in him rolling forward near the 700m when Egyptian Symbol improved to his outside. As a consequence of taking hold of his mount and steadying the tempo leaving the 1000m, Cana, which was following, commenced to race fiercely and had to be checked away from the heels of Magic Alibi. App. J Innes Jr was reprimanded under AR137(d) for slowing the speed of his mount leaving the 1000m, which resulted in a number of runners striking interference. Near the 50m App. J Innes Jr accidentally dropped his whip.
  • Nancy – rider M Bell stated his mount, with the slow early tempo, refused to settle throughout the run and when the tempo slackened in the middle stages his mount refused to settle and had to be checked away from the heels of Cana. He added that near the 600m he was again inconvenienced when Just A Blur shifted in, which resulted in Nancy having to be checked and losing ground. M Bell further stated as a consequence Nancy was unable to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr P Snowden stated with the way in which the event was run with the slow early tempo, the mare was left without a finishing effort having regard to the manner in which it raced.
