Summary of Races

RACE 1: #Theraces Handicap 1400m

  • Man From Uncle – the gelding, which had been restless in the barriers, began awkwardly.
  • Walk Right In – overraced in the early and middle stages. Near the 800m improved onto the heels of Chapelco and was steadied. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the near-hind cannon.
  • Invincibella – near the 200m shifted out and made contact with Miss Ballantine.
  • Chapelco – rider T Clark stated that his mount raced keenly outside the leader, Miss Ballantine, but when placed under pressure failed to finish the race off. He added in his view the colt was not suited by today's rain affected track. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr J Pride advised Chapelco had pleased since its last start at Warwick Farm on 3 October 2016 and could only concur with the assessment of T Clark. Mr Pride stated he would now give consideration to removing the blinkers from the colt. Stewards ruled that Chapelco must trial to their satisfaction prior to racing again.
  • Miss Ballantine – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the off-hind pastern.

RACE 2: TAB Highway Handicap 1000m

  • Bulls 'N' Bears – knuckled on jumping and shortly after the start made heavy contact with Lunar Duchess, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced.
  • Lighthouse – shifted out at the start and made contact with Lunar Duchess. Inclined to lay out throughout the event.
  • You're Kidding Me – blundered on jumping.
  • Fifteen Sunflowers – laid out under pressure in the straight.
  • Lunar Duchess – shortly after straightening the mare, which had been held up, was steadied when disappointed for a run to the outside of Aussie James. In this incident Lunar Duchess made contact with Fifteen Sunflowers, resulting in both horses becoming slightly unbalanced. Lunar Duchess then did not obtain clear running until approaching the 200m. Over the final 200m was inclined to lay out under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be mildly lame in the near-foreleg. Trainer Mr B Cavanough was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Lunar Duchess racing again.
  • Cheeky – rider K O'Hara explained that the gelding raced comfortably in the lead, but was most disappointing in its failure to respond on the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the near-fore fetlock.

RACE 3: Geohex Sprint 1000m

  • Eminent Duke – slow to begin (2L).
  • Top Striker – over the final 150m shifted out under pressure and made contact with Nieta and continued to lay out in the run to the winning post.

  • Petrossian – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 4: TAB Rewards Handicap 1200m

  • King's Officer – bumped by Sir Plush near the 450m. Rider T Berry stated that the gelding settled more forward than what the connections had anticipated due to the lack of early tempo. He added that when the race developed into a sprint home King's Officer, which is looking for further, could not quicken and consequently did not finish the race off as well as expected. T Berry further stated that in his view King's Officer, which was stepping up in grade today, is more effective when able to be ridden quieter off a more genuine tempo. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Onerous – on straightening was eased when disappointed for a run to the outside of King's Officer and shifted back in to improve.
  • Suspense – co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden was questioned relative to his notification that Suspense was to be ridden with cover. Mr Snowden stated that at its last start at Randwick on 8 October 2016 he was of the view the gelding raced too keenly outside the leader and consequently was unable to finish the race off. He said for this reason he instructed rider J Parr to obtain cover so that the gelding would relax in the run and afford it a better chance to finish the race off. Mr Snowden added this instruction had been similar to instructions issued to the gelding's riders in recent starts and his intention would be to issue consistent instructions in the future. He further stated that in his view, bearing in mind the last 600m was run in 33.34, this was the main reason for Suspense not being able to finish the race off strongly.
  • Strindberg – a post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which failed to run on in the straight, did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 5: Filante Handicap 1400m

  • Magicool – slow to begin.
  • Mr Gustavo – began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Destiny's Kiss.

RACE 6: IGA Liquor Handicap 2000m

  • Hipparchus – near the 200m Encosta Line and Hipparchus became unbalanced when Hipparchus laid in under pressure and made contact with that runner.
  • Vassal – rider App. A Adkins stated that his mount raced satisfactory in the early stages and when the tempo increased from the 700m it was left somewhat flat-footed. He added, after being hampered when taken wider by Diamond Made making the home turn, his mount was then most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth advised that Vassal has pleased the stable in the lead up to today's race and was at a loss to explain the performance. He undertook to report back to the Stewards on the future race plans and the condition of Vassal subsequent to the race.

App. Heywood was reprimanded and advised to ensure he leaves sufficient racing room for runners to his outside when he shifts ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a minor laceration to the near-fore fetlock.
  • Hermosa Beach – when questioned regarding the performance, rider T Berry stated the filly was disadvantaged when bumped and taken wider by Shotgun Roulette near 600m, which shifted out to improve. He said from this point Hermosa Beach found it difficult to make ground when placed under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr M Dale was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Hermosa Beach racing again.
  • Countess Marinov – laid out in the straight. When questioned regarding the mare leading, rider App. D Panya stated her instructions were to try and obtain cover and anticipated taking up a midfield position. She said, after her mount commenced well, she relaxed on the mare in an attempt to comply with her instructions, however when no other runner showed an intent to go forward, she was obliged to cross to the front so as to not risk being caught wide in the early stages. Trainer Mr D Payne confirmed the instructions issued and indicated he will instruct the rider at the mare's next start, as is usual, to endeavour to find cover if circumstances permit, as he is of the view the mare races best with cover.
  • Sort After – laid in under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.

  • Nat King Cu – App. J Innes Jr (Mon Pere) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under (AR137(a)) in that near the 200m he permitted his mount, which was inclined to lay out, to shift out when not clear of Choice We Had, which was taken out across the running of Nat King Cu, which was checked and lost its rightful running.
