Tough Betting and Big Value

Published: 21 Nov 2014

A touch of the carnival hits Kensington - Terai raced in a Group 2 at Flemington last start

So the Spring Carnival is over and the better gallopers are back in their stables recovering after the fierce battles of the last two months. Chris Waller scored a landmark victory by winning the Derby on arguably the best betting day of the calender, while the Melbourne Cup went to the very impressive Protectionist, a galloper that is sure to be a force in the Autumn after a spell.

Punters have to be more durable types though. The races just keep hitting us week after week.

Usually at this time of year the quality is slipping and the field sizes are low. Sometimes it can be tough to pick up the Guide and get excited, with lower quality races on offer.

But that isn't the case this week on the Kensington track. Just by chance, we get dealt a day that has as much betting interest as any Carnival offering. Each race looks closely contested and the quality is good enough. Big priced winners will be on offer and close finishes are assured.

A quick summary of each Kensington race is provided below along with a link to the Guide.

Race 1 - SURF MEETS THE TURF PLATE

The two year olds do battle and only two have race experience. The Godolphin filly Italy has promise, but she would have preferred a longer distance than the sharp 1000m. Is the door open for a chance at value?

Race 2 - FIRST SO YOU THINK YEARLINGS @ 2015 SALES PLATE

The stayers line up and two mares bring Flemington carnival form in Saigon Tea and Terai. Some of the others are racing well, but against easier midweek opposition. An open and shut case for the girls?

Race 3 - FIRST SEPOYS AT NEXT YEAR'S SALES HANDICAP

Well mares races are usually tough, but this is ridiculous. Our Horse Expert has swayed us into supporting the stronger types down the long straight. Most of them could win though!

Race 4 - INGLIS PREMIER YEARLING SALE 1-4 MARCH 2015 HANDICAP

This might just about be the best betting race. Some proven youngsters line up against up-and-comers from lower grade form races. It might just be a leap of faith that helps you pick the winner. Value to be found.

Race 5 - COOLMORE HANDICAP

You get some well-performed gallopers that need luck against a couple of solid on-pace each-way chances. Take the risk on the swoopers, or play it safe? The form from this race should stack up.

Race 6 - SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS HANDICAP

The mare Paris Match has the best sprint, but will the big strong colts and geldings let her show it? If she doesn't get things her own way the race really opens up. A big-priced winner is possible.

Race 7 - CHOOSE SEGENHOE HANDICAP

A bunch come from the same race and this looks the race almost guaranteed of a bunched finish. Go wide, cross your fingers and don't let the quaddie fall over without ticking a few boxes.

Race 8 - HUNTER VALLEY HORSE CAPITAL HANDICAP

Two big questions in this one. Can Mohave step up against the older horses and can Senta de Noche find the rails (finally!). They are both serious sprinters and our Bookie Battler is on!
