A Runaway Railway Stakes

Who can catch him? - The Cleaner comes to Perth

Today's Railway stakes promises to be a great renewal of the Group One classic, both in terms of quality and excitement. Tasmania's warhorse The Cleaner brings his bold racing style to the west and that means you know a Good Tempo will be set up.

He is more than good enough to hang on. But if things don't go his way, which galloper is best suited to testing race set-up?

The Race Analyst and Horse Expert investigate five key contenders.

No. 3 SMOKIN' JOEY

Horse Expert comment - "He is quite strong for a miler and likes to conserve his power for a surge over the last two furlongs. The fast pace may test his stamina in this."

Race Analyst comment - "Didn't do much in this race last year and recent form isn't quite up to Group One best."

Verdict - Needs improvement and luck

No. 4 ALMA'S FURY

Horse Expert comment - "Showing real resilience in his recent races, lifting to the line when others would tire. That is the exact quality he will need in this race."

Race Analyst comment - "Has always been a level below the better horses, but last two runs have been good enough to buy the plane ticket over here. A win wouldn't surprise, even from the barrier."

Verdict - In the race

No. 6 IHTSAHYMN

Horse Expert comment - "A tough galloper from Irish stallion Ihtiram. The extra distance suits and he is able to sustain a valiant run to the line. Has the right qualities."

Race Analyst comment - "Had the excuse of Cardiac Arrhythmia first-up, but recent form only fair. Doesn't look to be going well enough to win."

Verdict - The right horse, but not racing at best

No. 7 ELITE BELLE

Horse Expert comment - "She is a very game mare that has enough power to produce a sprint and the genuineness to maintain her run. She will need the latter to win this testing race."

Race Analyst comment - "A great record overall, but she didn't quite make up the ground you would have liked at $1.90 behind Magnifisio last start. Good enough at best."

Verdict - Good enough to show up

No. 10 BASS STRAIT

Horse Expert comment - "He doesn't carry much condition and is quite an athletic galloper. I really like to way he has sustained long runs with no cover in Perth."

Race Analyst comment - "Has produced good runs in both efforts in Perth, winning latest at good odds. Seemed to hold Respondent on the line in that race."

Verdict - This ex-Victorian is primed for a big run. He could be the one.
