Summary of Races

RACE 1: Schweppes Plate 1100m

  • All Too Ready – bumped on jumping and became unbalanced.
  • Trekking – began awkwardly. At the entrance to the straight Trekking, which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of Pymble, made contact with the hindquarter of All Too Ready, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. During this incident Trekking was disappointed for a run and was shifted back in. Trekking was then briefly held up for clear running before shifting to the outside of Pymble near the 250m to find clear running. This resulted in All Too Ready, which was positioned to the outside of that runner being carried wider when Trekking continued to shift ground. J Doyle, rider of Trekking, was told in similar circumstances he must stop riding his mounts and straighten them when they commence to shift ground.
  • Goodfella – began awkwardly and then was crowded shortly after the start between Pymble and All Too Ready. Laid out for some distance approaching the 800m and near the 800m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of All Too Ready.
  • Gaulois – near the 800m was checked to avoid the heels of Goodfella.
  • Herrera – near the 800m the filly, which was racing to the inside of Gaulois, was checked when crowded for room by Gaulois which shifted in slightly. Rider App. M Dee stated that the filly was stirred up prior to the running of the event, but after receiving interference near the 800m, did not respond to his riding from that point and was most disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr R Laing reported Herrera would now be spelled.

RACE 2: ATC Membership Handicap 1200m

  • Fanning – acting on veterinary advice that the gelding was found to have sustained a skin irritation, it was withdrawn at 11am. Trainer Mr C Conners was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Fanning's next race start.
  • Phuket – slow to begin, shifted out and made contact with the hindquarter of Calanda. Overraced in the middle stages and approaching the 800m made contact with the running rail when racing in restricted room to the inside of Cudabeen. Over the final 150m was inclined to lay out under pressure.
  • Cudabeen – began awkwardly. Overraced in the middle stages. On straightening made contact with Phuket as Phuket shifted out to improve to the outside of Pipeline.
  • Brulee – bumped on jumping. Rider App. N Heywood stated, after leaving the chute and entering the course proper, his mount did not travel comfortably and was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer P Robl indicated Brulee would now be spelled.
  • Calanda – for some distance inside the 200m was inconvenienced due to Montreal being inclined to lay out.
  • Montreal – rider T Berry stated his mount travelled satisfactorily in the early and middle stages and was then inclined to lay out in the early part of the straight when placed under pressure. He further stated he then had some concerns that something may be amiss with the colt over the concluding stages when its action changed. A post-race veterinary examination found the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and was lame behind. Co-trainer Mr A Bott advised that Montreal had pleased the stable since its first start win at Hawkesbury on 18 November 2016 and that it had no veterinary issues or conditions leading up to today's race. Mr Bott indicated that, in light of the performance and the veterinary report, the colt would now be spelled. Mr Bott was asked to report back if there is anything amiss with Montreal subsequent to the race. T Berry was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(i) and (ii) for having used the whip on eight occasions prior to the 100m (three more than permitted), including two consecutive strikes. In assessing penalty the Stewards took into account the totality of whip used in the straight.

RACE 3: TAB Highway Handicap 1100m

  • Under The Eaves – rider B Loy was reprimanded under AR91 for failing to arrive on course 45 minutes prior to the start of this event.
  • Tiger By The Tale – began awkwardly and then shortly after the start was crowded between Oakfield Time and Iltextya.
  • Kanerupt – rider T Berry stated the gelding was somewhat stirred up before the event and, after being slow to begin, he rode his mount forward, whereby it raced keenly in the run, however when he thought there was something amiss with the gelding, he stopped riding his mount out. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr G Vella advised Kanerupt had pleased the stable since its last start win, but in light of today's performance would now be spelled.
  • Absolute Ripper – raced wide without cover in the early stages.
  • Flash In The Dark – raced wide and without cover. Hampered on straightening when bumped by Deny Allcharges.
  • Deny Allcharges – on straightening was hampered when taken out by Iltextya, which shifted out to improve to the outside of Absolute Ripper. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be mildly distressed and displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Ms A Bennett was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Deny Allcharges racing again.
  • Oakfield Time – rider App. A Adkins advised he was able to obtain the lead, whereby his mount travelled comfortably, however under pressure in the straight weakened noticeably over the final 200m. He added in his opinion Oakfield Time had come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr T Evans confirmed the mare would now be spelled.

RACE 4: Treeserve Handicap 1200m

  • Imposing Lass – acting on veterinary advice that the mare was lame in the off-foreleg, it was a late withdrawal at 11.55am. Trainer Mr B Baker was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Imposing Lass racing again.

  • Painted Firetail – jumped awkwardly.
  • Hetty Heights – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a speedy cut to the off-hind cannon.

RACE 5: tab.com.au Handicap 1200m

  • Realise Potential – made heavy contact with Salmanazar on jumping when Realise Potential began awkwardly and shifted in, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. Overraced in the middle stages and near the 800m was restrained away from the heels of Ziggy Willie.
  • Elemenohpee – began awkwardly.
  • Red Extension – slow to begin.
  • Reincarnate – when questioned, rider B Avdulla stated his instructions were to take up a forward position and anticipated racing outside the early leader. He added his mount began only fairly, but when Realise Potential, which was positioned to his inside, and Star Wars, which was positioned to his outside, both shifted ground his mount then made slight contact with Realise Potential and as a consequence raced in restricted room for some distance in the early stages. B Avdulla further stated, when the tempo was reasonably quick, he elected to come back rather than risk being caught wide in the early stages and as a result settled towards the rear of the field. He said Realise Potential, which was in advance of him, was inclined to overrace and when that runner was steadied to avoid the heels of Ziggy Willie near the 800m he too was obliged to take hold, which resulted in Reincarnate shifting out to improve on the back of Avonaco. B Avdulla further added, as Avonaco had raced three wide with no cover for the majority of the event, rather than improving four deep from the 600m, he elected to improve to the inside of Avonaco making the home turn, whereby his mount was inclined to lay out and became awkward on the heels of Avonaco for a number of strides. He said, after balancing up on straightening, he was satisfied with the manner in which his mount finished the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the near-fore cannon.
  • Star Wars – shortly after the start was crowded between Reincarnate and Elemenohpee, which shifted in.
  • Salmanazar – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be making an abnormal respiratory noise and had aggravated a speedy cut to the off-hind pastern. Stable representative Mr G Thompson undertook to provide a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to being permitted to race again.
  • Avonaco – rider G Schofield stated his mount was caught wide without cover throughout the event. He said in the middle stages he felt his mount was galloped on and from that point, particularly when under pressure in the straight, it did not stretch out. G Schofield added when he had concerns with the gelding's action he then desisted from riding it out over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained multiple lacerations to the off-side hock. Trainer's representative Mr C Duckworth was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Avonaco racing again.

RACE 6: Starlight Stakes (Listed) 1100m

  • Didntcostalot – began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its off-fore plate in running.
  • Nieta – slow to begin. After being crossed by Whiskey Allround leaving the 1000m, Bachman shifted out and made contact with Nieta, resulting in Nieta being taken wider. Nieta was then obliged to race three wide without cover for the remainder of the event.
  • Whiskey Allround – overraced in the early and middle stages.
  • Shiraz – approaching the 300m was inconvenienced when Inz'n'out was taken out by Supreme Effort.
  • Supreme Effort – over the final 100m raced in restricted room between Inz'n'out and Nieta, which shifted out slightly.
  • Husson Eagle – when questioned, App. M Dee stated his mount settled back towards the rear of the field as anticipated, where it travelled well. He added the gelding was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off and the only explanation he could offer was it was not suited racing on the inside. Trainer Mr P Payne advised the Stewards that Husson Eagle had pleased since arriving in Sydney and was at a loss to explain today's performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying mild thumps. Mr Payne indicated the gelding had displayed this condition in the past. Stewards advised Mr Payne a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Husson Eagle's next race start and asked Mr Payne to report back on the progress of the gelding once it returns to his Victorian stables.
  • Mr Manhattan – when questioned regarding the gelding being ridden further back in the field today, C Reith stated from his midfield draw, after commencing reasonably well, he was of the view that his mount was going to be caught wide and for this reason he elected to restrain and take up a position behind Supreme Effort. He added when Supreme Effort did not hold its position in the early stages, he was then obliged to take up a position at the rear of the field and settled further back than anticipated.

RACE 7: ATC Cup (Listed) 2000m

  • Destiny's Kiss – which had a healing boil at the base of the mane, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start.
  • Lady Le Fay – crowded on jumping between Not A Gypsy and Dance Of Heroes, both of which shifted ground. Approaching the 300m was steadied when disappointed for a run between Falkenberg and Iggi Pop, which shifted out.
  • Index Linked – slow to begin.
  • Dance Of Heroes – began awkwardly.
  • Iggi Pop – raced wide without cover.
  • Mighty Lucky – near the 1600m, when inclined to overrace, was checked to avoid the heels of Falkenberg (K McEvoy), which shifted in slightly. Whilst the Stewards accepted the racing manners of Mighty Lucky was the significant cause of the incident, K McEvoy was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. Mighty Lucky then overraced throughout the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its near-fore plate in running.
  • The Bull – approaching the 300m ran out abruptly, resulting in its rider B Avdulla having to stop riding and straighten his mount.
  • Dance Of Heroes – approaching the 200m Lady Le Fay improved into a narrow run between Iggi Pop and Dance Of Heroes. After establishing this position Dance Of Heroes shifted out away slightly from The Bull, resulting in Lady Le Fay being placed in restricted room for some distance. In this incident G Schofield, rider of Lady Le Fay, was obliged to ride his mount to hold its position to the inside of Iggi Pop, which resulted in Lady Le Fay and Dance Of Heroes making contact and Dance Of Heroes then shifting in away from Lady Le Fay and becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of The Bull. A short distance later The Bull, which was weakening, shifted out slightly, which then contributed to Dance Of Heroes striking the heels of that runner, having to be checked, blundering badly and losing significant ground. After considering the incident, the Stewards were not of the view that any rider had ridden carelessly and in those circumstances no action was taken against any rider. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had a puncture wound to the off-hind cannon and had lost its off-hind plate in running.
  • Closing Bell – rider T Berry stated his mount throughout the run raced one-paced and when the tempo increased from the 1600m was immediately under pressure, however over the concluding stages did commence to run into the race again, before striking interference and having to be checked from the heels of Dance Of Heroes near the 150m. He added in his view Closing Bell would be better suited being able to be ridden in the lead where it can dictate the tempo. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: The Steel Builders Festival Stakes (Group 3) 1500m

  • Religify – acting on veterinary advice that the gelding was lame in the near-foreleg, it was withdrawn at 9.45am.
  • Rageese – a veterinary examination of the horse, which was withdrawn from the Railway Stakes on Saturday, 19 November 2016, passed it fit to start. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Extensible – slow to begin and shortly after the start was crowded by Red Excitement, which shifted out. Overraced in the middle stages.
  • Marenostro – when being restrained in an attempt to find cover in the early stages overraced. Rider T Angland stated his mount was caught wide without cover throughout the run and was inclined to race keenly in the middle stages. He added other than this he could offer no excuse for the poor run, particularly as it was beaten a long way from the finish. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer's representative Mr C Duckworth stated that Marenostro had pleased the stable in the lead up to today's race and had been working well. He said that he was unable to provide any explanation for the manner in which the horse weakened noticeably in the run home and undertook to report back to the Stewards the condition of the gelding in the days subsequent.
  • Amovatio – rider T Berry was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on seven occasions prior to the 100m (two more than permitted). In assessing penalty the Stewards took into account the totality of whip used in the straight.

RACE 9: TAB Handicap 1500m

  • Col 'N' Lil – began awkwardly. For some distance in the early stages was restrained from the heels of Cauthen's Power when that runner was being steadied by its rider in an endeavour to find cover. Overraced in the middle stages.
  • Duca Valentinois – began awkwardly. Near the 800m had to be steadied when racing in restricted room between Cauthen's Power and Redoubtable Heart.
  • More Than Fabulous – was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Blundered linking up with the course proper near the 1400m.
  • Wine 'N' Dine – was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Blundered linking up with the course proper near the 1400m.
  • Metallic Crown – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
