Vet Notes

  • Terwilliker (Race 1)  – a post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame in the off fore leg. Stable representative E Cummings was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to Terwilliker's next race start.
  • Falco (Race 3)  – a post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration off hind leg. Trainer M Dale undertook to report back on the results of a full veterinary examination including an endoscopic examination.
  • Distraught (Race 4) – a post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be coughing. Stable representative D Beadman was advised that Distraught would now be retired.
  • Estaminet (Race 5) – a post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have lost its near fore plate and to be mildly lame in that leg. Trainer's representative Mr W Stewart advised that Estaminet had pleased the stable since arriving up from Melbourne and said the mare has a history of being keen in its races. He added that he attributed the racing manners of Estaminet to the fact that it was having its first run this way of going, and in the light of today's performance would now be spelled.
  • Go Benny (Race 6) – a post race veterinary examination of the gelding, which weakened in the straight, revealed it be displaying a poor post race recovery.
  • Believe Yourself (Race 7) – a post race veterinary examination the mare to have multiple laceration to both hind legs. Stable representative N Paine was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to Believe Yourself's next race start.
  • Unbiased (Race 8) – a post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying poor post race recovery.
  • Pick Me Up (Race 9) – after being loaded became fractious in the barriers and became cast. Acting on veterinary advice Pick Me Up was a late withdrawal at 5.41pm
  • What Could Be (Race 9) – a post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post race recovery.

Penalties & Fines

  • J Pride, trainer of My Psychiatrist was fined $100 under LR 35(2) for the late declaration of apprentice D Panya as the rider.

Summary of Races

RACE 1 – Schweppes Handicap 1100m

  • Terwilliker – to be ridden more forward; settled back. Was slow to begin and shortly after the start was steadied when crowded between Chauffer and Falconic. In this incident Terwilliker lost ground. A post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame in the off fore leg. Stable representative E Cummings was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to Terwilliker's next race start.
  • Falconic – near the 150m Falconic and Coorg made contact due to both runners shifting ground slightly. In this incident Coorg made contact with the hindquarter of Falconic causing that runner to shift out and lose ground.
  • Chauffer – for the major part of the straight was inclined to lay out under pressure and proved difficult to ride out. Rider J Parr was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out fully to the end of the race.

RACE 2 – #Theraces Plate 1400m

  • Achi Baba – began awkwardly and then was hampered by Arbeitsam which began awkwardly and shifted out.
  • Arbeitsam – began awkwardly and shifted out.
  • How Sweet It Is – rider J Ford advised that his saddle slipped back on jumping away which placed him at a minor disadvantage throughout the run.
  • Cadogan – G Schofield stated that he was instructed to follow the favourite Zumbelina in the run and to hold his mount up for one last run inside the final 200 metres. He added that when the tempo quickened from the 500m his mount was immediately under pressure and from that point disappointed in its failure to finish the race off. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer B Baker advised that Cadogan had pleased leading into today's race but having regard to today's performance Cadogan would now be gelded and spelled. Mr Baker undertook to report back on the results of an endoscopic examination to be performed and indicated the colt will barrier trial prior to racing again.

RACE 3 – TAB Highway Handicap 400m

  • Forever Newyork – the gelding, which sustained an abrasion to the near hind cannon in the float en route to the course, was examined by the club's veterinary officer and passed fit to start.
  • The Nickster – shortly after the start was bumped on the hindquarter. Near the 100m was hampered and taken wider by I Told Georgie (B Shinn) which improved into a narrow run between The Nickster and Artistic Beauty to obtain clear running. B Shinn was advised to ensure that there is sufficient racing room to improve into runs.
  • Backless – was slow to begin and then crowded shortly after by Al Cubana which shifted out and as a result Backless lost ground. A short distance later Backless was hampered and lost further ground when Falco was bumped and taken in by Bills A Goodie. Making the home turn commenced to improve into the race and had to be steadied away from the heels of Diamond Charlie.
  • Bills A Goodie – was badly buffeted on jumping and became unbalanced when crowded between Falco and The Nickster. Rider C Reith stated that the intention was to go forward on his mount but after being interfered with at the start his mount was caught wide without cover for the majority of the event and consequently weakened in the straight. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Falco – was buffeted on jumping between Bills A Goodie and Artistic Beauty which shifted out. Rider apprentice N Heywood stated that with blinkers on for the first time his mount took up a more forward position than it had previously established however it was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. He added that the only explanation he could offer is that Falco may not have been suited racing as far forward as it did today. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration off hind leg. Trainer M Dale undertook to report back on the results of a full veterinary examination including an endoscopic examination.
  • Diamond Charlie – was briefly crowded on jumping. Raced wide without cover throughout.

RACE 4 – Electro Mechanical Services Handicap 1400m

  • Roeinda – to be ridden more forward; led.
  • Alart – Rider L Magorrian stated that his instructions were to be in the first three, however as the start was effected Alart blundered badly and as a consequence became badly unbalanced and lost ground. He added that Alart was then inclined to lay out throughout the early stages and after initially responding to his riding near the 700m was disappointing in its failure to finish its race off. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer P Farrell stated that Alart today was not suited by racing too far back in the field after the incident at the start which he attributed to the mare's disappointing run. Mr Farrell undertook to report back if there is any thing amiss with Alart after the race.
  • Ashiata – hampered on jumping.
  • Lycia – hampered on jumping.
  • Distraught – began awkwardly and shortly after was crowded by Roeinda which shifted in. A short distance later blundered. Overraced in the early stages and near the 1200m had to be steadied away from the heels of Alart which shifted out marginally. Rider C Reith stated that he had intended to be more forward on his mount today however when Alart blundered to his inside Distraught did not race as far forward as he anticipated and he was obliged to come back and take up a position behind that runner in the early stages. He added that as a consequence he raced further back than intended but Distraught was most disappointing in its failure to finish its race off. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be coughing. Stable representative D Beadman was advised that Distraught would now be retired.
  • Heartlings – raced keenly in the early stages. Caught wide in the early stages and was allowed to stride for today's forward by its rider to take up a position outside the lead. Was inclined to lay out when under pressure in the early part of the straight.
  • Shutter Bug – raced keenly in the early stages .

 RACE 5 – TAB Rewards Sprint 1100m

  • Kudero – to be ridden quieter; settled worse than midfield. Slow to begin and a short distance later was steadied away from the heels of Our Renaissance.
  • Top Striker – began awkwardly.
  • Estaminet – Raced greenly in the middle stages. Approaching the 800m had to be steadied away from the heels Voilier. Estaminet was then obliged to race wide without cover from this point. Estaminet then continued to overrace for some distance thereafter. Rider apprentice N Heywood stated that he was instructed to be in a forward position but the mare, which is somewhat light in the mouth, jumped awkwardly and as a consequence settled further back. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have lost its near fore plate and to be mildly lame in that leg. Trainer's representative Mr W Stewart advised that Estaminet had pleased the stable since arriving up from Melbourne and said the mare has a history of being keen in its races. He added that he attributed the racing manners of Estaminet to the fact that it was having its first run this way of going, and in the light of today's performance would now be spelled.
  • Sugar Ray Leonard – approaching the 800m was steadied away from the heels of Estaminet.
  • Magnajoy – rider L Grace stated that he was beaten for early speed and as a consequence took a sit behind the early leader Our Renaissance. He added that he endeavoured to improve into clear running soon after straightening however Magnajoy failed to respond to his urgings. The only excuse he could offer for today's performance was that Magnajoy is a better horse when ridden in the lead or outside the leader. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Voilier – near the 50m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Top Striker (A Adkins)) which shifted out under riding. Apprentice A Adkins was reprimanded and advised that he must stop riding sooner than he did on this occasion.

RACE 6 – ATC Christmas Handicap 2000m

  • My Psychiatrist – trainer J Pride was fined $100 under LR 35(2) for the late declaration of apprentice D Panya as the rider.
  • Trafalgar – to be ridden more forward; settled on pace.
  • Montaulk – near the 1900m had to be steadied away from the heels of My Psychiatrist which shifted out and away from HunterJack.
  • Dream Folk – pulled hard throughout the early and middle stages and for the majority of the middle stages of the race had to be restrained away from the heels of Go Benny.
  • Shalmaneser – was held up on the heels of Hunter Jack for a short distance near the 200m.
  • Hunter Jack – close to the finish had to be steadied when crowded by Multifacets which was taken in by My Psychiatrist (D Panya). Apprentice D Panya was advised that she must stop riding sooner than she did on this occasion.
  • Multifacets – rider T Berry was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip six times prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account the totality of his whip use in the straight.
  • Lonley Orphan – rider G Schofield was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip seven times prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account the totality of his whip use in the straight.
  • Hunter Jack – rider apprentice N Heywood was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip seven times prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account the totality of his whip use in the straight.
  • Go Benny – A post race veterinary examination of the gelding, which weakened in the straight, revealed it be displaying a poor post race recovery.

RACE 7 – TAB Handicap 1400m

  • Reincarnate – to be ridden further forward; settled outside leader. Bumped on jumping.
  • Believe Yourself – making the first turn was restrained to avoid the heels of Reincarnate (A Adkins) which shifted in when not clear. Apprentice A Adkins was reprimanded and advised that he must be two lengths clear when crossing other runners. Rider B Shinn stated that he was instructed to go forward on the mare today but on jumping away Believe Yourself blundered badly and became quite badly unbalanced. He said Believe Yourself then never really travelled at any stage of the event and weakened in the straight. A post race veterinary examination the mare to have multiple laceration to both hind legs. Stable representative N Paine was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced prior to Believe Yourself's next race start.
  • Wine Tales – crowded on jumping.
  • Himalaya Dream – shortly after the start was steadied when crowded between Believe Yourself and Eminent Duke which shifted out. When questioned regarding his riding from the 800m and in particular as to whether there was an opportunity to take up a position closer to the back of All Cerise, C Reith stated that as has been the horse's pattern most recently he was instructed to ride his mount quietly towards the rear of the field. He said whilst the opportunity was available to him to be racing closer on the back of All Cerise, he felt it was not in the best interests of his mount to ride it along and improve his position as Himalaya Dream has a history of not finishing its races off when ridden in this manner. He said as a consequence he encouraged his mount to improve into the race without riding it along and after then improving up on the back of All Cerise approaching the 200m Himalaya Dream finished the race off reasonably. He added that in his view Himalaya Dream is better suited on a softer track.
  • Onemorezeta – was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

RACE 8 – Pluck@Vinery Handicap 1500m

  • Zatopaz – to be ridden along in the early stages to be as far forward as possible; settled off pace. Raced wide without cover.
  • Embley – slow to begin and was crowded shortly after the start. Was inconvenienced for some distance approaching the 1200m to avoid the heels of Unbiased which was racing fiercely.
  • Final Decision – began awkwardly, and raced wide without cover for the major part of the race.
  • Unbiased – leaving the 1300m when inclined to overrace had to be checked to avoid the heels of Gold Ambition (L Magorrian) which, after initially being taken in by Hogmanay (J Innes), then continued to shift in which then resulted in the interference suffered by Unbiased being compounded. Both apprentice L Magorrian and apprentice J Innes were reprimanded and advised that they must ensure they are sufficiently clear when crossing other runners. In assessing penalty Stewards took into consideration the racing manners of Unbiased which contributed to the interference it had suffered. After this incident Unbiased then raced fiercely, refused to settle for some distance and was checked away from the heels of Gold Ambition until nearing the 1000m. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying poor post race recovery.
  • Reneged – was inconvenienced for some distance approaching the 1200m to avoid the heels of Unbiased which was racing fiercely. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Kandinsky – was checked on jumping. Was inconvenienced for some distance approaching the 1200m to avoid the heels of Unbiased which was racing fiercely.
  • Most Exalted – for some distance near the 1200m raced in restricted room to the inside of Unbiased and was hampered on a number of occasions. Approaching the 300m had to be steadied when disappointed for clear running between Unbiased and Wine 'N' Dine which shifted out slightly. Most Exalted was then directed back to the inside of Wine 'N' Dine to secure clear running approaching the 200m.
  • Classic Uniform – after shifting to a position one off leaving the 600m King Darci shifted to the inside of Classic Uniform to secure clear running. Classic Uniform then was inclined to hang out making the home turn.

RACE 9 – TAB.com.au Sprint 1200m

  • Quantrill – to be ridden quieter; settled midfield. J Doyle was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for use of the whip seven times prior to the 100m. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account the totality of his whip use in the straight.
  • Choice Larga – to be ridden further forward; settled off pace. Was checked on jumping. Leaving the 700m was placed in restricted room when Isorich was inclined to lay in. Stewards were satisfied that apprentice A Adkins had endeavoured to correct his mount as it commenced to shift ground. Near the 150m was steadied when crowded by Thelittleracketeer which was taken in by Isorich which shifted in when inclined to hang in under pressure. Stewards were satisfied that apprentice A Adkins had endeavoured to straighten his mount when it commenced to shift ground.
  • Pick Me Up – after being loaded became fractious in the barriers and became cast. Acting on veterinary advice Pick Me Up was a late withdrawal at 5.41pm. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Pick Me Up be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made prior to 5.41pm to be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1st) Isorich less 7c win and 11c place 2nd) Quantrill less 11c place 3rd) Sonic Swish less 7c place Trainer T Martin was advised that Pick Me Up must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to racing again.
  • What Could Be – slow to begin. Held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and near the 200m was steadied when disappointed for clear running between Open Book and Nobel Joey. After briefly being ridden along after the 200m was again held up over the final 150 metres and as a consequence went to the line without being tested. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post race recovery.
  • Rock Mylady – over the final 200 metres could not be tested when placed on the heels of Louie Sea Kay.
  • Louie Sea Kay – slow to begin. For some distance inside the 200m raced in restricted room between Noble Joey and Raijinz as it endeavoured to obtain a narrow run between those two runners. When that run closed inside the 100m could not obtain clear running and went to the line without being tested.
  • Raijinz – knuckled over on jumping and shifted out. Over the concluding stages was buffeted between Noble Joey and Hands From Above which was taken in by Isorich.
  • Sonic Swish – from outside barrier shifted in behind runners in the early stages.
  • Petrossian – soon after the start had to be steadied when crowded by Choice Larga.
  • Hand From Above – badly held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and did not obtain clear running until approaching the 50m where it was then placed in restricted room to the inside of Isorich which shifted in and as a consequence could not be tested over the concluding stages.
