Mr O'Shea undertook to report back to the Stewards on the future race plans for Piracy, however he indicated consideration would be given to spelling and gelding the colt.
  • Pienkna (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame behind. Stable representative Mr G Thompson was asked to provide a veterinary clearance for Pienkna prior to its next race start.
  • Treviso (Race 3) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.
  • Love None (Race 4) – the mare which, after being loaded, was fractious in the barriers, reared and sat down, was a late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 2.53pm.
  • Invincible Knight (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a wound to the front of the near-fore pastern.

  • A Bullock, rider of Schumacher, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 700m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Our Renaissance, which was taken in and crowded Badajoz, which was checked and lost the running to which it was entitled. A Bullock's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 18 January 2017 and to expire on Friday, 27 January 2017, on which day he may ride. Over the final 100m brushed with Top Striker on a number of occasions due to both runners shifting ground.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: TAB Rewards Plate 1100m

  • Menari – slow to begin. Commenced to race keenly in the middle stages. Held up for clear running in the early part of the straight.
  • Newburgh – slow to begin. Raced keenly in the middle stages and near the 700m was awkward on the heels of Momentum To Win and shifted out.
  • Piracy – rider J Doyle stated that his mount was very keen in its preliminary and then soon after arriving behind the barriers it was placed into the gates, whereby it was agitated and after beginning well was quickly into stride. He added, whilst the instructions were to endeavour to find cover on the colt, his mount was able to lead without being pressured and was comfortable in front and he therefore elected to maintain that position rather than restrain. J Doyle further stated that over the final 100m Piracy gave ground quickly and made an abnormal respiratory noise, which continued upon pulling up. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery, respiratory distress and heat stress. Trainer Mr J O'Shea advised that the colt being keen in its preliminary may have contributed to the disappointing performance. Mr O'Shea undertook to report back to the  Stewards on the future race plans for Piracy, however he indicated consideration would be given to spelling and gelding the colt. Rider J Doyle was spoken to relative to his obligations under AR140(aa) to notify any pre-race occurrence which may affect the performance of his mount in a race and in similar circumstances he should convey his concerns to the starter for notification to the Stewards.
  • Taking Aim –when questioned, G Schofield stated he had not expected to take up a forward position on the colt, however after beginning well, he assumed a position outside the leader without being pressured. He added that making the home turn Taking Aim, which was racing keenly, was inclined to lay out away from the early leader Piracy and, whilst he was aware that the eventual winner and short-priced favourite Menari was positioned back to his inside, his mount would not hold a true one-off line despite his efforts. G Schofield said that on straightening, when he was obliged to ride his mount along, Taking Aim then shifted out further, which afforded Menari clear running to his inside. G Schofield's explanations were noted.

RACE 2: #Theraces Handicap 1200m

  • Raiment – the filly, which was fractious in the tie-up stalls and kicked out, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer on arrival at the barriers and cleared to race. Raced keenly in the middle stages and leaving the 700m was shifted to the outside of Butterboom to avoid that runner's heels. Laid in in the straight.
  • Thelittleracketeer - got its head up at the start.
  • Modha – which had been slightly slow to begin, made contact with Countess Marinov on jumping. Overraced in the early and middle stages and for some distance leaving the 800m was awkward on the heels of Countess Marinov. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Pienkna – slow to begin and then shortly after the start was crowded for room between Raiment and Sangiovese, which shifted out. Rider A Hyeronimus expressed some concern with the action of his mount in the straight and consequently did not test it fully to the finish. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame behind. Stable representative Mr G Thompson was asked to provide a veterinary clearance for Pienkna prior to its next race start.
  • Countess Marinov – overraced in the early stages and for some distance near the 700m was steadied away from the heels of Raiment.

RACE 3: Alm Handicap 1200m

  • Reach For Heaven – after being slow to begin and making contact with the hindquarter of Ebenos, was then crowded for room when Ebenos shifted in. Held up rounding the home turn and for some distance near the 300m raced in restricted room to the inside of Ghostly.
  • Echo Effect - began awkwardly and made contact with Treviso. Pulled hard in the early stages when positioned behind Treviso. When Treviso then shifted in Echo Effect was left without cover and commenced to race fiercely, which then resulted in its rider having to allow his mount to stride forward and take up a position outside the leader Improvement near the 600m. Echo Effect continued to race wide without cover until the home turn.
  • Henry The Createth – raced keenly in the early stages and near the 900m was steadied away from the heels of Treviso (C O'Brien), which shifted in when not clear. C O'Brien was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Treviso – raced keenly in the early and middle stages and refused to settle when caught wide without cover. Making the home turn was hampered when taken wider when Pumpkin Pie shifted out to improve. Rider C O'Brien stated his mount pulled hard in the run and refused to settle and, after being hampered making the home turn, failed to finish the race off. A postrace veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.
  • Ghostly – making the home turn Tornado Of Souls raced in restricted room between Improvement and Echo Effect, resulting in Tornado Of Souls shifting in towards Ghostly, which had to be steadied. A short distance later Ghostly shifted out slightly and made contact with Pumpkin Pie, which in turn shifted out and hampered Treviso.
  • Tornado Of Souls – near the 250m shifted out around the heels of Echo Effect to improve and in so doing carried Pumpkin Pie wider.
  • Ebenos – R Hutchings stated that he had been instructed to take up a more forward position on the gelding, however after being hampered at the start, he was obliged to settle further back than intended. He added when the tempo increased from the 600m Ebenos found it difficult to make up ground from back in the field.

RACE 4: TAB Highway Handicap 1400m

  • Love None – the mare which, after being loaded, was fractious in the barriers, reared and sat down, was a late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 2.53pm. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Love None be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made prior to 2.53pm to be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1st) Cogliere less 3ȼ win and 3ȼ place 2nd) Zuzzudio less 5ȼ place 3rd) Al Cubana less 4ȼ place Trainer Mr M Schmetzer was advised Love None would be required to barrier trial prior to its next start.

Rider B El-Issa was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(i) and (ii) for using the whip on eight occasions, as well as consecutive strikes, prior to the 100m (three more than permitted). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account the totality of whip use.
  • Van Halen – raced very keenly in the early stages and for some distance near the 800m was checked away from the heels of Al Cubana.
  • Al Cubana – raced keenly in the middle stages. When questioned regarding his riding in the straight, G Schofield stated that shortly after jumping his saddle shifted back on the gelding, placing him at a disadvantage throughout the run. He said soon after straightening his mount commenced to lay out and his safety and control was somewhat compromised due to the saddle shifting and he allowed his mount to shift out. G Schofield added that, after applying some pressure to Al Cubana near the 200m, his mount commenced to shift in and again he was placed at a significant disadvantage when testing his mount due to his saddle continuing to shift with him and for this reason he was not able to test his mount fully to the finish of the race. Trainer Mr B Cavanough confirmed that on return to the enclosure the saddle was found to have shifted back significantly. Rider G Schofield stated he would ensure that ne now applies a breast plate to the gear of the gelding when he rides it again. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Fireman Sam I Am – on straightening was steadied to avoid the heels of Mar Nero.
  • Cogliere – for the major part of the race travelled wide without cover.
  • L'elu – over the concluding stages was crowded for room between Zuzzudio (App. J Innes Jr), which after shifting in away from Cogliere (App. A Adkins), was taken in by that runner. After passing the winning post L'elu had to be steadied by its rider when its ground was taken from it. Both App. J Innes Jr and App. A Adkins were reprimanded and advised they must stop riding and straighten their mounts when they commence to shift ground.

RACE 5: Maroubra Mile 1600m

  • Harada Bay – a post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which weakened over the concluding stages, did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 6: TAB Handicap 2400m

  • Thewayweare – trainer Mr J Thompson, represented by Mr R King, was fined $50 under AR59A for failing to produce the Thoroughbred Identity Card for the gelding. Rider B Spriggs was questioned in respect to the tactics adopted on Thewayweare during the middle stage of the event. After taking evidence, the Stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Dream Folk – slow to begin.
  • Hardern – slow to begin. Tightened for room near the 500m between Admiral Jello and Burning Energy, which shifted out slightly. Rider D Moor stated he endeavoured to take up a trailing position in the early stages, however was hampered on the first turn when Zatopaz improved to his inside and he elected to come back in order to settle back behind that runner. He added his mount travelled satisfactorily throughout the event, but was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Trafalgar – from its outside barrier shifted in across behind runners.
  • Burning Energy – raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
  • Zatopaz – an inquiry was opened into the tactics adopted by rider L Roche on the gelding throughout the event. After taking evidence from L Roche, the matter was adjourned to a date to be fixed. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 7: Schweppes Handicap 1400m

  • Dylan's Rojo – prior to the declaration of correct weight App. A Adkins viewed the patrol films to ascertain whether he had grounds for objection. When he was satisfied and the Stewards were similarly satisfied there were insufficient grounds, correct weight was declared.

  • Invincible Knight – knuckled on jumping. Shortly after the start raced in restricted room when Metallic Crown shifted in. Near the 1200m struck the heels of Arigold when crowded for room between Choice We Had and Arigold which, after initially being taken in by Invinzabeel, then shifted in away from that runner. The Stewards found that J Ford, rider of Arigold, had endeavoured to correct his mount as soon as the pressure to his mount was relieved and despite his efforts Arigold continued to shift in, which resulted in Invinzabeel striking the heels of that runner. App. B McDougall was cautioned in relation to his riding of his mount in the early stages where he continued to hold a position to the inside of Arigold, whereby in the opinion of the Stewards his best option in the circumstances would have been to take up a trailing position behind that runner. • Tower Of Song – when questioned regarding his mount being ridden more forward, App. N Heywood stated racing first up today his mount, from its wide draw, jumped well and rather than restrain he was able to take up a more forward position than he had expected without having to make use of his mount.

RACE 8: tab.com.au Handicap 1100m

  • Last Witness – slow to begin.
  • Machinegun Jubs – slow to begin. Leaving the 1000m had to be steadied when crowded between Top Striker and Encostanati, which was taken in by Badajoz (J Doyle). J Doyle was advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to leave sufficient room for runners to his inside. Stewards took into consideration that Top Striker had shifted out and contributed to the crowding of Machinegun Jubs.
  • Schumacher – knuckled on jumping. On straightening was bumped by Top Striker and taken wider as Top Striker shifted to the outside of Our Renaissance to improve.
  • Jetello – jumped awkwardly from its wide draw and then taken back behind runners. Rounding the home turn near the 600m the gelding, which was racing ungenerously, got its head on the side when being steadied away from the heels of Machinegun Jubs, shifted out abruptly and was checked.
  • Badajoz - shortly after the start made contact with Our Renaissance. A Bullock, rider of Schumacher, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 700m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Our Renaissance, which was taken in and crowded Badajoz, which was checked and lost the running to which it was entitled. A Bullock's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday, 18 January 2017 and to expire on Friday, 27 January 2017, on which day he may ride.
