The Winning Moves - Rosehill Gardens
Published: 30 Nov 2014
The Race Guide's look at the winning moves for Rosehill Gardens. What made the difference in getting a bet on the right horse in each race?
Race 1 TAB.COM.AU PLATE (2YO) - 1100m
1st SAMPEAH (John O'Shea) - $2.10
Two youngsters dominated the market and the winner was well-backed. The trial of the winner Sampeah was good enough, but not enough to warrant the betting move on it's own. If you followed the move, led by O'Shea stable confidence, you would have started the day with a bang.
The winning move - A good dose of stable knowledge
Clear margin - Sampeah stormed home late
Race 2 DE BORTOLI WINES HANDICAP (3YO BM71) - 1200m
1st HARRIER JET (Chris Waller) - $12
A lot of talk before the race about the two favourites being too short in the market. Lockroy and Invitations both didn't manage to find a place, while a couple of others disappointed too. Harrier Jet seemed to have come back OK in his trials and he paraded in good fashion in the yard.
"Harrier Jet looks well first up, but lacks power" @TheRaceGuide mounting yard comment
The winning move - Taking the value based on trials and the mounting yard
Race 3 ASCEND SALES TROPHIES HANDICAP (3YO&UP F&M BM80) - 1300m
1st DUBLIN LASS (Peter & Paul Snowden) - $2.80
Blake Shinn was very confident before the race and the performance of Dublin Lass proved he was right. She brought great form-lines into the race and the Shinn made sure she saved energy with the big weight. It was an easy win on the line
The winning move - Good form analysis
Race 4 TAB REWARDS HANDICAP (3YO&UP BM75) - 1100m
1st RELIGIFY (Chris Waller) - $3.30
The Waller stable doesn't have many out-and-out speedsters, so this Choisir sprinter got a lot of attention. His form to date had been very good, but the big betting move must have come from stable confidence. He reached a new level to win this so easily.
The winning move - Faith in Waller to get further improvement
Race 5 ATC CUP (3YO&UP) - 2000m
1st MALICE (John O'Shea) - $3.40
In a field full of dour stayers, Malice stood out as a galloper that had a nice turn-of-foot. His form was strong, but it was his superior speed and acceleration that got him the win off a Slow Tempo.
The winning move - Betting on Malice's turn-of-foot
Sprinted well - Malice (on the right) dives late to win
Race 6 FESTIVAL STAKES (3YO&UP) - 1500m
1st I'M IMPOSING (Chris Waller) - $19
Sometimes you just need to punt based on different scenarios and this is a galloper that always enjoys a good strong speed. With Aomen engaged there was a chance they would go quickly and the result was a typical strong swooping finish.
The winning move - Taking the value in-case there was a Good Tempo
Race 7 STARLIGHT STAKES (3YO&UP) - 1100m
1st OUR BOY MALACHI (Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes) - $2.50
This was an easier one. A galloper with 14 wins from 16 starts, a great racing constitution, low weight and maps well is hard to go past. The odds might have even been a bit long.
The winning move - He looked a stand-out on many counts
A stand-out pick - Our Boy Malachi had a lot in his favour
Race 8 IRRESISTIBLE POOLS & SPAS HANDICAP (3YO&UP BM85) - 1350m
1st COMMANDING WIT (Peter & Paul Snowden) - $2.70
She was an unlucky runner last start in a race run in quick time behind Vashka. The key challenger in this race, Amovatio, drifted in the market and was ridden right at the back, leaving the door open for the strong mare to get the win.
The winning move - Watching the video replays or reading The Race Guide's video comments
"Jumped ok, shuffled back (8th 2W) (even tempo), edged wider turn, checked 400m, switched out and finished well [bias: off rails*]" The Race Guide's video comment for Commanding Wit on 15th November
The Race Guides for the main weekend races will be available from this Thursday
