Vet Notes

Palazzo Pubblico (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia and a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr M Smith was advised that a veterinary clearance, including the results of a satisfactory ECG, would be required prior to the mare barrier trialling to the satisfaction of Stewards.
Schubert (Race 3) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be mildly lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer Mr J O'Shea advised Schubert would be spelled. On this assurance no action was taken.
Fifth Affair (Race 4) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr G White was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Fifth Affair racing again. Mr White subsequently advised that an endoscopic examination conducted on return to the stables revealed no abnormalities.
Magic Hurricane (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer Mr J O'Shea was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Magic Hurricane racing again.
Into Orbit (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to have a laceration to the near-side knee and an abrasion to the off-hind cannon.
La Bella Diosa (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be coughing. Co-trainers M and M Brown were advised a veterinary clearance would be required, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to the filly racing again.
Omei Sword (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed that the filly bled from both nostrils. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was advised Omei Sword would incur the mandatory three month ban from racing under AR53A.
Abbey Marie (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame behind. Trainer Mr M Kent was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare racing again.
Veladero (Race 9) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer's representative Mr C Duckworth could offer no excuse for the performance, other than Veladero was stepping up in grade after racing against three-year-old company last start. He undertook to report back on the progress of Valadero and the future race plans for the colt.

Penalties & Fines

Mr C Conners, trainer of Torvill was fined the sum of $100 under LR35(2) for failing to declare G Schofield as the rider of the filly by the prescribed time. Slow to begin and then was hampered shortly after when Delago Thunder shifted in. After being held up making the home turn, had to be steadied and shifted back to the inside of Delago Thunder to obtain clear running shortly after straightening.
D Moor, rider of Pellegrina pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that rounding the first turn he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Alizee, which was taken onto Sweet Deal, which was checked and lost its running. D Moor's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 20 March 2017 and to expire on Friday, 31 March 2017, on which day he may ride.
T Angland, rider of Heavens Above pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he applied the whip on eight occasions prior to the 100m. T Angland was fined the sum of $1000. In assessing penalty Stewards were mindful of the number of strikes T Angland had applied to the horse inside the final 100m.
L Tarrant, rider of Sold for Song pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that passing the 400m he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Single Gaze, which was steadied and lost its running. L Tarrant's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of six metropolitan and provincial meetings.
L Tarrant, rider of Sold For Song pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 300m he allowed his mount to shift out when not clear of Shillelagh, which was checked and lost its running. L Tarrant's licence to ride was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 13 March 2017 and to expire on Friday, 24 March 2017, on which day he may ride (8 metropolitan/provincial meetings). Stewards ruled that both suspensions be served concurrently.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Schweppes Handicap 1350m

Torgersen – slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages and refused to settle. Laid out in the middle stages and rounding the home turn.
Voilier – laid in in the straight, obliging its rider T Angland to change the whip from his left to right hand approaching the 300m.
Extensible – shifted in under pressure over the final 100m and near the 25m was corrected by its rider B Shinn when it commenced to crowd Bring Luck.
Fly Forward – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, App. A Adkins stated the gelding travelled comfortably outside the leader Voilier in the early stages, but when placed under pressure in the straight did not respond to his riding and in his view its condition may have given out. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr R Price was questioned relative to the condition of Fly Forward leading into today's race. He said, as notified by the Stewards on 23 February 2017, the gelding had pulled up lame in front due to an abscess which had developed in the lead up to the Wyong race, however had been cleared to race at Wyong, but the condition reoccurred due to racing on the firm track conditions. Mr Price stated that Fly Forward then remained in his Kembla Grange stable, whereby it continued to be exercised, being swum twice a day principally due to the wet weather and also to manage the issue with its hoof. He said that the gelding had pleased in a track gallop on Thursday, 9 March 2017 and he was of the view that it was in sufficient condition to run out a strong 1350m. He further added that a vet clearance was provided prior to today's race clearing the gelding to run and he attributed today's performance to the fact the gelding was stepping up in grade from a provincial class 2 to a benchmark 89. Mr Price undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Fly Forward subsequent to the race.

RACE 2: Smooth FM Maurice McCarten Stakes (Group 3) 1100m

Artistry – in the early part of the straight raced in restricted room and made contact with Zelady's Night Out when endeavouring to shift into a narrow run between that horse and Palazzo Pubblico.
Palazzo Pubblico – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia and a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr M Smith was advised that a veterinary clearance, including the results of a satisfactory ECG, would be required prior to the mare barrier trialling to the satisfaction of Stewards.

RACE 3: Café Culture + Insitu Pago Pago Stakes (Group 3) 1200m

Condor Heroes – the colt, which took charge of its rider during the preliminary and galloped a considerable distance at speed, before being restrained by its rider was withdrawn on veterinary advice 1.46pm. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Condor Heroes be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made prior to 1.46pm to be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1st) Single Bullet less 25ȼ win and 26ȼ place 2nd) Ducimus less 13ȼ place 3rd) Coruscate less 32ȼ place Albumin – the gelding was a late withdrawal at 1.48pm on veterinary advice when it got its near-hind leg up on the running board and sustained abrasions. Stewards subsequently ordered that all monies wagered on Albumin be refunded in full and with regard to betting with bookmakers all successful wagers made between 1.46pm and 1.48pm to be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1st) Single Bullet less 8ȼ win and 5ȼ place 2nd) Ducimus less 10ȼ place 3rd) Coruscate less 13ȼ place
The Mission – slow to begin.
Destiny's Choice – on jumping The Mission was hampered when crowded by Ducimus, which shifted in slightly. The Mission then being shifted in slightly when ridden forward, which resulted in Destiny's Choice having to be checked. The interference to Destiny's Choice was then compounded by Thy Kingdom Come, which shifted out slightly. The Mission was then placed in restricted room by Single Bullet (T Angland). T Angland was advised to exercise more care.
All Day – jumped awkwardly. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
All Too Huiying – for some distance after the start overraced and was steadied away from the heels of Single Bullet.
The Mission – overraced badly in the early stages and for some distance shifted in, resulting in Thy Kingdom Come having to be steadied when being placed tight to the inside of that runner approaching the first turn. The Mission continued to overrace in the middle stages and refused to settle.
Ducimus – under pressure over the final 200m laid out and near the 150m and again at the 100m brushed with Single Bullet. Ducimus and Single Bullet then brushed again over the concluding stages due to both horses shifting ground.
Schubert – rider K McEvoy could offer no tangible excuse for the disappointing performance, other than in his view the colt raced flat. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be mildly lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer Mr J O'Shea advised Schubert would be spelled. On this assurance no action was taken.

RACE 4: Chandon S Magic Night Stakes (Group 3) 1200m

Torvill – trainer Mr C Conners was fined the sum of $100 under LR35(2) for failing to declare G Schofield as the rider of the filly by the prescribed time. Slow to begin and then was hampered shortly after when Delago Thunder shifted in. After being held up making the home turn, had to be steadied and shifted back to the inside of Delago Thunder to obtain clear running shortly after straightening.
Fifth Affair – as L Tarrant was late arriving on course, permission was granted for App. A Adkins to be substituted as the rider of the filly, as no suitable senior rider was available. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr G White was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Fifth Affair racing again. Mr White subsequently advised that an endoscopic examination conducted on return to the stables revealed no abnormalities.
Meliboea – began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the race.
La Chica Rosa – began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Sweet Deal – slow to begin. D Moor (Pellegrina) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that rounding the first turn he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Alizee, which was taken onto Sweet Deal, which was checked and lost its running. D Moor's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Monday, 20 March 2017 and to expire on Friday, 31 March 2017, on which day he may ride.
Could You Be Loved – rounding the first turn was steadied when crowded for room by Memento (S Clipperton), which shifted in when not clear. S Clipperton was reprimanded. Inclined to race greenly under pressure and in the straight laid out proving difficult to ride.
Seababe – raced keenly in the early and middle stages and rounding the first turn was steadied away from the heels of Delago Thunder.
Tulip – raced greenly and was inclined to lay out. Near the 800m Delago Thunder shifted out, making contact with Tulip, which was hampered and taken wider.
Pellegrina – in the straight raced very greenly and was inclined to shift ground. Near the 300m shifted in away from Tulip when that runner shifted in slightly.
Greater Good – laid in and proved difficult to shift to the outside of runners in the early part of the straight.
Smooth Landing – approaching the 200m became awkward on the heels of Pellegrina when that runner commenced to give ground. Smooth Landing was then steadied away from the heels of Pellegrina and shifted in to find clear running.

RACE 5: McGrath Estate Agents Sky High Stakes (Group 3) 2000m

Antonio Giuseppe – the gelding, which suffered a minor abrasion to its off-side hock on Thursday afternoon, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. Laid in under pressure in the straight.
Allergic – slow to begin. Made the home turn awkwardly.
Who Shot Thebarman – near the 150m raced in restricted room for a short distance between Magic Hurricane and Lasqueti Spirit, which shifted out. Who Shot Thebarman was then held up on the heels of Red Excitement for some distance inside the 150m and did not obtain clear running until the concluding stages.
Magic Hurricane – rider S Clipperton stated the only excuse he could offer for today's performance was that the gelding was under pressure as far out as the 800m with the strong tempo and as a consequence was left without a finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer Mr J O'Shea was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Magic Hurricane racing again.
Grand Marshal – rider G Schofield stated, with the strong early tempo, he was of the view that his mount would be able to finish the race off. He added when the tempo increased from the 800m his mount became under pressure and soon after straightening was a beaten horse, whereby it weakened in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr L Prior advised Grand Marshal had pleased the stable since its first up run in the Chipping Norton Stakes on 25 February 2017. He added today the only excuse he could offer was that the solid tempo throughout the early and middle stages may not have suited the gelding, as it was under pressure a long way from the finish. Mr Prior undertook to report back on the post-race condition and future race plans for the gelding.

RACE 6: Cellarbrations Phar Lap Stakes (Group 2) 1500m

Bezel – slow to begin. Rider W Buick stated that, after commencing awkwardly, his mount made an abnormal respiratory noise throughout the early and middle stages and for this reason he did not test the colt in the run. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J O'Shea advised that Bezel, following its disappointing performance at Randwick on 4 February 2017 when it was found to be displaying thumps post-race, was progressing well and was expected to perform competitively today. He said the colt had pleased in a trial on 27 February 2017 and had worked well on Wednesday, 8 March 2017. Mr O'Shea undertook to report back to the Stewards the results of a full veterinary examination and he would now perform a dynamic scope prior to Bezel's next race start. The inquiry was adjourned to allow the results to be provided to the Stewards.
Rock And Swing – hampered shortly after the start when French Fern shifted out. Near the 250m shifted out abruptly. When placed under pressure in the straight was inclined to shift ground over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Redouble – began awkwardly and then was steadied and shifted back in across runners after the start.
Into Orbit – near the 1300m made contact with Pumpkin Pie when that runner endeavoured to shift Into Orbit closer to the rail. Approaching the 1000m became badly unbalanced as On The Spot (B Shinn) endeavoured to force Into Orbit closer to the rail. When Into Orbit attempted to hold its one-off position on the back of Achi Baba, Into Orbit, which was inclined to race keenly them became badly unbalanced. B Shinn was reprimanded and advised that he must exercise more care than he did on this occasion. When questioned, rider C Reith advised that his mount raced keenly throughout and it was left without a finishing effort and consequently did not finish its race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to have a laceration to the near-side knee and an abrasion to the off-hind cannon.
Pumpkin Pie – approaching the 1200m had to be steadied when crowded between Into Orbit and On The Spot (B Shinn) which shifted in when not clear. B Shinn was reprimanded and told to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground.
Foxplay – when questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the straight, rider K McEvoy stated that on straightening he contemplated improving into a narrow run between Into Orbit and On The Spot, however when Into Orbit shifted out slightly, he elected to go back to the inside of that runner to find clear running. He said he observed a run available to the inside of French Fern and then attempted to take that run, but as he did so French Fern, which was giving ground, shifted out, which resulted in Foxplay having to be checked away from the heels of initially French Fern and then Comic Set. K McEvoy added that he then was able to secure clear running to the inside of Comic Set near the 200m, whereby his mount was able to finish off strongly and win.
On the Spot – when questioned, B Shinn explained he was under no specific instructions, however his mount settled back after being slow to begin at its most recent start. He added when the colt began well today he took the option of allowing it to stride forward and race more prominently.

RACE 7: Coolmore Classic (Group 1) 1500m

Euro Angel – bumped with La Bella Diosa on jumping. Overraced in the early and middle stages and got its head up when being restrained away from the heels of In Her Time rounding the first turn. Euro Angel then continued to overrace badly throughout the middle stages and refused to settle. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities, apart from a laceration to the near-fore cannon.
La Bella Diosa – bumped with Euro Angel on jumping. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be coughing. Co-trainers M and M Brown were advised a veterinary clearance would be required, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to the filly racing again.
Heavens Above – slow to begin. Rider T Angland pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he applied the whip on eight occasions prior to the 100m. Sold For Song – slow to begin. First Seal – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. A postrace veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Omei Sword – from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners in the early stages. A postrace veterinary examination revealed that the filly bled from both nostrils. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was advised Omei Sword would incur the mandatory three month ban from racing under AR53A
Denmagic – raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Bumped by Euro Angel on the first turn.
Thames Court – near the 1400m blundered and became unbalanced.

In Her Time – shortly after straightening, when endeavouring to improve outside Silent Sedition, became awkward on the heels of Silent Sedition when that runner shifted out slightly. In Her Time was then placed awkwardly close to the heels of Silent Sedition for some distance approaching the 200m.
French Emotion – raced wide without cover throughout the event.
Dixie Blossoms – rider T Clark advised that when caught wide he did not feel he had the force to continue forward and cross runners to his inside and consequently he was left racing wide without cover. He added in his view this was the main reason that the mare failed to finish its race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Abbey Marie – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame behind. Trainer Mr M Kent was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare racing again.
Global Glamour – rider K McEvoy stated his mount travelled comfortably in the lead, but he was unable to comply with his instructions to shift to the middle of the track on straightening when Daysee Doom improved to his outside. He added the only explanation he could offer for the performance of Global Glamour was that it did not run out a strong 1600m.

RACE 8: Hyland Race Colours Ajax Stakes (Group 2) 1500m

Slow Pace – slow to begin.
He's Our Rokkii – began awkwardly and made contact with No Doubt.
Arod – raced keenly in the early and middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
No Doubt – had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn.
New Tipperary – shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages. When questioned, B Avdulla stated he had no specific instructions and, with blinkers on for the first time today, his mount jumped well and was able to take up a forward position. He added when Singing unexpectedly held a forward position to his inside he was obliged then to race three wide without cover for the majority of the event. B Avdulla further stated when Testashadow crossed to the front leaving the 1000m he contemplated going forward and racing outside that runner, however, when Testashadow remained one off, he felt there was no benefit in riding his mount forward to take up a more forward position and as a result remained racing wide without cover for the remainder of the event.
Singing – when questioned, T Clark explained that he anticipated settling off the speed. He added, however his mount began particularly well and raced keenly in the early stages and consequently settled in a more prominent position. T Clark said that Singing then continued to overrace and ultimately did not finish it's race off in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 9: tab.com.au Handicap 1900m

Doc Holliday – slow to begin.
Green Sweet – when being restrained to take cover approaching the first turn near the 1600m got its head up, ran in and made contact with the running rail.
Veladero – rider G Schofield stated his mount travelled comfortably outside the lead, but offered little when placed under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.
