Summary of Races

RACE 1: Irresistible Pools & Spas N E Manion Cup (Group 3) 2400m

  • Big Duke – Stewards considered an objection lodged by C Williams (Big Duke) alleging interference over the final 300m. After taking evidence from the parties and viewing the official patrol films, the Stewards were satisfied that inside the 300m Our Century shifted out, resulting in Big Duke and Our Century making contact and then Big Duke was further carried out a number of horses for some distance thereafter when Our Century continued to shift out. Stewards also found that over the concluding stages C Williams' ability to fully test his mount was impeded due to Our Century continuing to shift out. As the Stewards were satisfied that had the interference not occurred Big Duke would have finished in advance of Our Century, they Stewards upheld the protest and amended the placings to read: 1 st Big Duke 2 nd Our Century 3 rd Allergic.
  • Paragon – began awkwardly.
  • Kinema – began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the middle stages. When questioned regarding his riding from the 700m and as to whether there was an opportunity to shift to the outside of Allergic from the 500m, R Moore stated, after following Allergic into the event, he attempted to come to the outside of that runner, however, Kinema hung in and would not respond to his efforts to shift to the outside. He added as a consequence he elected to endeavour to improve to the inside of Allergic and, after being briefly held up on the home turn, he was able to secure clear running, whereby his mount finished the race off only fairly.
  • Shalmaneser – making the home turn had to be steadied away from the heels of Our Century (B Melham), which shifted out to improve to the outside of Café Society. B Melham was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
  • Café Society – rider T Clark stated that the gelding travelled comfortably in the lead, but when placed under pressure in the straight was inclined to shift ground when being ridden out. He added in his view Café Society may have got its tongue over the bit during the run, but also he felt its first up performance may have resulted in it racing flat today. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mrs G Waterhouse advised Café Society had pleased since its first up run at Randwick on 4 March 2017 and undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of the gelding subsequent to the race.
  • Allergic – rider W Buick stated that his mount was not all that comfortable on the heavy track conditions and, although it was able to finish third, was well beaten soon after entering the straight.

RACE 2: TAB Birthday Card Stakes (Group 3) 1200m

  • Hieroglyphics – made contact with Tempt Me Not on jumping. Rider B Avdulla stated that his mount travelled comfortably in a forward position, but in his view, whilst the mare has some wet track form, it did not handle today's rain affected going when asked for an effort. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr E Cummings advised Hieroglyphics races best when fresh and in his view may have raced somewhat flat today, due to a tough run on a heavy track on 4 March 2017. He indicated the mare will be given a short let up before its next race start and he undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Hieroglyphics subsequent to the race.
  • Tempt Me Not – the mare, which was slow to begin, was bumped by Hieroglyphics and lost ground. Rider T Clark advised, after being hampered at the start, his mount settled further back than had been anticipated, but in his view failed to handle the heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Cummings agreed with the assessment of T Clark and advised that he would now avoid racing the mare on heavy track conditions. The post-race condition of Tempt Me Not will be followed up with the stable in the days subsequent.
  • Samantha – got its head up when being eased away from the heels of Hieroglyphics when awkwardly placed rounding the home turn. When questioned, A Adkins explained that the filly raced keenly in the early and middle stages and he endeavoured to obtain cover behind Hieroglyphics approaching the first turn. He added, after briefly obtaining cover behind Hieroglyphics, he was obliged to shift wider when awkwardly placed when Samantha continued to overrace and then when Tempt Me Not also shifted wider inside him he was then obliged to race wide without cover from the 800m.
  • Almighty Girl – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a small amount of blood coming from the mouth of the mare, due to an abrasion to the gum.

  • Hartnell – slow to begin. When questioned, rider W Buick advised his instructions were to ensure that he obtained cover. He said from his barrier his mount jumped only fairly and he elected to take up a trailing position on the back of the winner Our Ivanhowe. W Buick added his mount in his opinion was not comfortable on today's heavy track conditions, although in the circumstances he felt the run had merit in that Hartnell was able to make up ground in conditions.
  • Sofia Rosa – laid in from the 600m.
  • Stratum Star – near the 600m made contact with the running rail when racing tight to the inside of Sofia Rosa, which laid in. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • The United States – hung in in the straight under pressure and near the 25m made contact with Antonio Giuseppe, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. Rider B Melham pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he used the whip on 10 occasions (5 more than permitted) prior to the 100m. B Melham was fined $600.

In the incident Inference clipped the heels of Land Of Plenty and blundered. The Stewards were satisfied that riders S Arnold and C Williams had made sufficient effort to prevent their mounts from shifting ground. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth advised that Comin' Through would now undergo a thorough veterinary examination, the results of which will be forwarded to the Stewards, at which time a decision will be made on the immediate racing future.
  • Prized Icon – rider G Schofield advised that the colt did not handle the heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

  • Tulip – Stewards considered a protest lodged by K McEvoy, rider of 4th placegetter Tulip against 3rd placegetter Menari (C Brown), alleging interference over the final 150m. After considering the evidence, including the Stewards' patrol films, Stewards found that approaching the 150m Menari shifted out, resulting in Tulip being inclined to shift out away from that runner. Stewards also found that passing the 50m Menari again shifted out, impeding the run of Tulip, resulting in K McEvoy having to stop riding with his whip and revert to hands and heels riding and both runners making contact, due to Menari shifted out. Having regard to the margin of a short half head and the manner in which Tulip finished the race off, Stewards upheld the protest and amended the placings to read: 1 st She Will Reign 2 nd Frolic 3 rd Tulip 4 th Menari Tulip raced wide without cover throughout.

A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
  • Diamond Tathagata – J Lloyd (Houtzen) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of Teaspoon, which was taken across the running of Diamond Tathagata, which was checked and lost its running. J Lloyd's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Thursday, 23 March 2017 and to expire on Sunday, 2 April 2017, on which day he may ride.
