Vet Notes

Alliterate (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed filly to be mildly lame in the off-fore leg. Mr Farrell was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Alliterate racing again.
Almanzora (Race 3) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr J O'Shea concurred with the views of rider C Brown that Almanzora had raced too keenly after being bumped heavily at the start. He advised it is his intention to continue on with the filly's preparation and he undertook to notify the Stewards of the post-race condition of Almanzora subsequent to the race.
Teaspoon (Race 3) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to the nasal region.
Dream Lane (Race 4) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and to have tied up. Trainer Mr N Mitchell was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Dream Lane racing again.
La Bella Diosa (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have blood present in its off-side nostril. Training partnership M and M Brown were advised La Bella Diosa must gallop over 1000m or barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to its next start.
Harlow Gold (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and thumps. Stable representative Mr R Reynolds was advised a veterinary clearance must be produced prior to Harlow Gold racing again.
Devise(Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed filly to have lost its off-hind plate in running.
Who Shot Thebarman (Race 8) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to its nearfore tendon region. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.

Penalties & Fines

Mr D Payne, trainer of Ace High was fined the sum of $200 under AR140 for the late notification to add blinkers to the colt's gear.
M Zahra, rider of Shoals pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that approaching the winning post he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear contributing to Serena Bay being checked and losing its running. M Zahra's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 9 April 2017 and to expire on Thursday, 20 April 2017, on which day he may ride.
H Bowman, rider of Bonneval was fined the sum of $500 under AR137(c) for making a celebratory gesture prior to passing the winning post.
C Brown, rider of Sense Of Occasion pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on 11 occasions prior to the 100m (6 more than permitted). C Brown's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 16 April 2017 and to expire on Sunday, 23 April 2017. In addition C Brown was fined the sum of $2000.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Adina Apartment Hotels Fernhill Handicap (Listed) 1600m

Ace High – trainer Mr D Payne was fined the sum of $200 under AR140 for the late notification to add blinkers to the colt's gear.
Earth Angel – slow to begin. Briefly held up in the early part of the straight when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Whispered Secret.
Medal Kun – slow to begin.
Muraahib – slow to begin. Shortly after the start was crowded between Ace High and Zeppelin, which shifted out slightly. After being held up for clear running, was steadied and shifted back out across the heels of Zeppelin when that runner shifted in near the 350m. Ace High then shifted out in order to improve. Rider D Oliver stated his mount settled further back than he had anticipated in a slowly run race, was unsuited when the tempo quickened from the 600m and found it difficult to make up ground. He added he was briefly held up making the home turn, however under pressure in the straight was disappointing in its failure to run on and in his view may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr R Roberts advised the colt will now be spelled.
Coulthard – began awkwardly, got its head up and made contact with Whispered Secret.
Yorkshire Rock – after being slow to begin from its wide barrier, was shifted in behind runners.
Toga Picta – laid in under pressure inside the 200m, obliging its rider J Doyle to change the whip from the left to the right hand near the 100m.
All Too Huiying – raced greenly under pressure inside the final 150m and near the 100m shifted out, resulting in T Clark having to stop riding and straighten.
Whispered Secret – raced wide without cover throughout.
Zeppelin – a post-race veterinary examination of the colt, which failed to run on, did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 2: TCL South Pacific Classic (Listed) 1400m

Bezel – slow to begin. Rider J Doyle stated his mount failed to travel at any stage of the event and he could not offer any explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr D Beadman advised the colt would now be spelled.
Ubatuba – slow to begin.
Travancore – from its wide barrier, was steadied and shifted in behind runners. Overraced in the early stages. Over the concluding stages was crowded and unable to be ridden out when tightened for room between Screamarr and Siren's Fury (K O'Hara), which shifted in. K O'Hara was reprimanded.
Bryneich – made contact with Peacock on jumping. Raced wide without cover throughout. Commenced to shift out under pressure approaching the 100m, obliging its rider C Brown to stop riding and straighten. Inside the 100m Bryneich then commenced to shift back in and proved somewhat difficult to ride.
Peacock – made contact with Bryneich on jumping. Near the 100m shifted out in order to improve around the heels of Bryneich, which ran out abruptly and in so doing carried Screamarr and Travancore wider.
Siren's Fury – soon after the start Generalissimo made contact with Screamarr when that runner was taken in slightly by Red Hearts. As a consequence Generalissimo then shifted in away from Screamarr despite the efforts of its rider, resulting in Siren's Fury having to be steadied.
Screamarr – which was having difficulty obtaining clear running near the 250m, shifted out in order to improve and in so doing carried Travancore and Siren's Fury wider.
Alliterate – when questioned regarding the filly leading, rider C Lever stated he was instructed to be positive from the barrier, however not necessarily lead. He added in the early stages when Hussterical and Red Hearts, which was positioned to his inside, showed no intent to lead, he elected to go forward and cross those runners rather than being caught wide without cover. Trainer Mr P Farrell confirmed the instructions today were to be in the first three in today's race if possible, as the filly at its most recent start at Scone on 26 March 2017 had got out of its ground and failed to run on. He said he felt with the heavy track conditions today Alliterate would be more competitive if ridden positively. Mr Farrell was reminded of his obligations to notify the Stewards of any change of tactics in similar circumstances. He added that in his view the filly appeared to be short in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed filly to be mildly lame in the off-fore leg. Mr Farrell was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Alliterate racing again.
Hussterical – rider T Clark stated his mount failed to handle the heavy track conditions and did not travel well at any stage of the event. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr A Bott stated Hussterical had pleased the stable since its last start at Kembla Grange on 10 March 2017 and in particular in a barrier trial at Hawkesbury on 28 March 2017. He added, as reported to the Stewards, the filly had sustained a minor cut above its off-side eye in the lead up to today's race, but had not missed any work. He said he concurred with rider T Clark that Hussterical did not handle today's heavy track conditions. Mr Bott undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress and future plans for the filly.

RACE 3: IG Share Trading Percy Sykes Stakes (Group 2) 1200m

Almanzora – when questioned, rider C Brown reported his mount, after receiving heavy contact at the start, raced too keenly in the run and as a result was left without a finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr J O'Shea concurred with the views of rider C Brown that Almanzora had raced too keenly after being bumped heavily at the start. He advised it is his intention to continue on with the filly's preparation and he undertook to notify the Stewards of the postrace condition of Almanzora subsequent to the race.
Formality – shifted out abruptly on jumping and made heavy contact with Shoals, resulting in Shoals becoming unbalanced, shifting out and also making contact with Teaspoon, which in turn shifted out and made contact with Serena Bay, which also then shifted out and made contact with Almanzora, which was bumped heavily.
Villa Carlotta – held up until passing the 250m.
Serena Bay – M Zahra (Shoals) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that approaching the winning post he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear contributing to Serena Bay being checked and losing its running. M Zahra's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 9 April 2017 and to expire on Thursday, 20 April 2017, on which day he may ride.
Formality – when questioned regarding his riding in the straight, rider C Williams stated that his mount did not handle today's heavy track conditions at any stage of the event. He added, after shifting out at the start, his mount was inclined to lay out throughout the event and did not travel comfortably in the heavy going. He said for this reason making the home turn he took a shorter hold of the filly in an endeavour to pick it up and assist it to travel through the ground. C Williams further stated that on straightening, although he was aware a run was available between Didn't Mention It and Almanzora, he was unable to take advantage of this position as his mount was not travelling well enough to do so. He said when Almanzora then shifted in near the 350m he improved to that runner's outside and commenced to ride his mount along hands and heels. When questioned as to why he did not use the whip on the filly in the straight, C Williams stated, as his mount was not travelling well enough, he was reluctant to use the whip on the filly and for this reason rode his mount out vigorously hands and heels to the finish to assist it finish the race off and to obtain the best position in the field.
Teaspoon – a post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to the nasal region.

RACE 4: The Provincial Championships Final 1400m

Heavenly Anna – slow to begin.
Shazee Lee – began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the middle stages. Leaving the 500m was checked to avoid the heels of Pacific Reign, which was tiring, and as a consequence ran out. D Oliver, rider of 7th placegetter (Shazee Lee) was reprimanded under AR137(b) for failing to ride his mount out to the finish of the race.
Virgilio – raced keenly in the early stages.
Better Not Blue – making the home turn commenced to improve into a narrow run between Ziganui and Princess Posh. After obtaining this position, Better Not Blue then had to be checked to avoid the heels of Pacific Reign when that runner commenced to give ground quickly on straightening. Better Not Blue was then shifted to the outside of Ziganui to secure clear running.
Clevedon Bay – on straightening bumped by Calabasas, which was shifted to the inside of Dream Lane in an endeavour to improve. When questioned, rider T Berry could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance other than the gelding may not have appreciated todays shifty track conditions and the mare was not entirely comfortable. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Calabasas – had some difficulty in the early part of the straight obtaining clear running.
Princess Posh – near the 500m was steadied when crowded between Pacific Reign and Heavenly Anna (J Ford), which shifted out slightly. J Ford was advised to exercise more care. Briefly held up on the heels of Heavenly Anna near the 300m.
Pacific Reign – raced wide without cover.
Dream Lane – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and to have tied up. Trainer Mr N Mitchell was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Dream Lane racing again.

RACE 5: Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Group 2) 1200m

Tribal Wisdom – after being fractious in the barriers, reared on jumping and lost ground (2L). Raced keenly in the middle stages. Raced in restricted room for some distance approaching the 100m and then was steadied when crowded between Tactical Advantage and Glenall, which hung in away from Saracino.
Star Of Monsoon – slow to begin (2L).
Derryn – shifted in at the start and made contact with Spright. From its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners.
Defcon - from its wide barrier was shifted in behind runners.
Into Orbit – in the early and middle stages raced keenly.
Glenall – hung in under pressure in the straight and proved difficult to ride out over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Tactical Advantage – which had been held up for clear running, was checked when disappointed for a run passing the 400m between Into Orbit and Crafty Cop, which shifted out slightly. When endeavouring to obtain this run Tactical Advantage made contact with Crafty Cop. Tactical Advantage was then held up for a short distance thereafter.
Saracino – raced wide without cover and hung out throughout. Near the 250m had to steady away from the heels of Derryn (M Zahra), which shifted in when not quite clear. M Zahra was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground.
Impending – held up for clear running until near the 150m.
Crafty Cop – when questioned, rider T Berry stated his mount relaxed in the run today, but could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 6: James Boag's Premium Australian Oaks (Group 1) 2400m

Bonneval – began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with Waking Moment. H Bowman, rider of the winner, was fined the sum of $500 under AR137(c) for making a celebratory gesture prior to passing the winning post.
Cambage – began awkwardly. Near the 1800m was steadied by Perfect Rhyme, which was taken in by Nurse Kitchen (B Shinn). B Shinn was reprimanded. In this incident Perfect Rhyme, which was inclined to race keenly, was also steadied to avoid the heels of Nurse Kitchen.
Wheal Leisure – after being slow to begin, was crowded for room between Perfect Rhyme and Devise, which shifted out. Overraced in the middle stages.
Lasqueti Spirit – was inclined to shift out near the 250m and made contact with Perfect Rhyme. Near the 150m Lasqueti Spirit and Perfect Rhyme again brushed due to both horses shifting ground.
La Bella Diosa – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have blood present in its off-side nostril. Training partnership M and M Brown were advised La Bella Diosa must gallop over 1000m or barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to its next start.
Harlow Gold – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and thumps. Stable representative Mr R Reynolds was advised a veterinary clearance must be produced prior to Harlow Gold racing again.
Nurse Kitchen – when questioned regarding the filly racing further forward, B Shinn advised he was under no specific instructions, however when his mount began particularly well he took advantage of this and made a decision to ride forward. He said in hindsight Nurse Kitchen did not finish the race off and may be better suited ridden quieter. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Devise – when questioned regarding the performance, D Oliver stated in his opinion the filly did not run out the journey of today's race on the soft track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed filly to have lost its off-hind plate in running.
Waking Moment – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 7: Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 1) 2000m

The United States – on return to scale the Stewards considered an objection lodged by D Oliver, rider of 4th placegetter The United States against 2nd placegetter Hartnell, alleging interference near the 1000m and again in the early part of the straight. After considering submissions from the connections and taking into account the Stewards' patrol films, Stewards found that near the 1000m Hartnell improved to the outside of No Doubt where there was insufficient room, resulting in Hartnell making contact with The United States and The United States being taken wider on the track. A short distance later No Doubt then shifted out, resulting in Hartnell being taken out onto The United States and exacerbated the degree of interference. The Stewards then found D Oliver, rider of The United States, then elected to take up a trailing position on the back of Hartnell. In respect to the grounds of interference in the straight the Stewards found Hartnell shifted out approaching the 300m, resulting in The United States being taken wider on the track, however the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had both incidents not occurred that The United States would have finished in advance of Hartnell and as such the objection was dismissed. At a subsequent inquiry J Doyle (Hartnell) was reprimanded.
Happy Clapper – near the 1500m had to be checked when crowded for room between Hartnell, which shifted out slightly, and The United States (D Oliver), which shifted in. D Oliver was reprimanded. In assessing penalty Stewards found that D Oliver had made an attempt to correct his mount when he ascertained it had shifted in and crowded Happy Clapper.
Sense Of Occasion – rider C Brown pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for having used the whip on 11 occasions prior to the 100m (6 more than permitted). C Brown's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 16 April 2017 and to expire on Sunday, 23 April 2017. In addition C Brown was fined the sum of $2000.

RACE 8: Schweppes Sydney Cup (Group 1) 3200m

Making the turn out of the home straight on the first occasion near the 2100m Almoonqith broke down behind, resulting in rider J Doyle being dislodged. Who Shot Thebarman, which was following, became badly unbalanced when its rider B Shinn took evasive action to avoid the fallen horse, resulting in B Shinn also being dislodged. When Almoonqith remained on the track approximately two horses off the fence and both J Doyle and B Shinn remained positioned on the track, the Stewards acting under the provisions of AR139 elected to declare the running of the Sydney Cup void when the field was near the 1200m. At this time a number of riders did not observe the signal by the clerks of the course and of the barrier staff, who were positioned near the 900m and again on the home turn when Stewards also raised a signal for riders to ease their mounts down. The following horses continued to be ridden in a competitive manner by their riders: Polarisation, Chance To Dance, Penglai Pavilion, Annus Mirabillis, Vengeur Masque and Assign. The Stewards ruled that all final field betting with bookmakers were to be refunded in full.

Who Shot Thebarman – a post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to its nearfore tendon region. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.
Almoonqith – after breaking down near the 2100m, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer, who found the horse to have sustained a catastrophic fracture to its off-hind cannon. On humane grounds Almoonqith was euthanased. After interviewing co-trainer Mr D Hayes, rider J Doyle and taking evidence from Stipendiary Steward Mr R Livingstone, who inspected the relevant areas of the track, the matter was adjourned pending a report from the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Camden, where the horse will be transported to for autopsy. Mr Hayes was asked to provide his veterinary and treatment records for the horse. Rider J Doyle was asked to provide a medical certificate prior to riding again. The inquiry was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
Big Duke – stable representative Mr J Mclean advised the gelding lost its off-hind plate, however had pulled up well subsequent to the event.

RACE 9: Coolmore Legacy Stakes (Group 1) 1600m

Elle Lou – as J Doyle injured his left knee in a fall in race 8, C Reith was substituted as the rider of the mare.
Heavens Above – slow to begin.
Diamond Made – slow to begin.
Oregon's Day – slow to begin.
Silent Sedition – shifted out at the start and made contact with Abbey Marie.
Abbey Marie – shortly after the start raced in restricted room with Diamond Made when both horses were crowded between Foxplay and Silent Sedition, both of which shifted ground.
Foxplay – leaving the 1400m was steadied to avoid the heels of Dixie Blossoms (S Clipperton), which shifted in when not clear. S Clipperton was reprimanded and told to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground.
Real Love – overraced in the early and middle stages.
Euro Angel – raced keenly in the early and middle stages, refused to settle and got its head up when being restrained by its rider in an endeavour to obtain cover. Raced wide without cover throughout.
First Seal – when questioned regarding the mare being ridden more forward, rider B Shinn stated he was under no specific instructions, which is usually the case. He said at Mooney Valley on 24 March 2017 First Seal was slowly away and for this reason settled back in the field. He added in the Coolmore Stakes on 11 March 2017 he was again issued with no specific instructions, however after not jumping well on that occasion, he elected from his wide barrier to come back and ride his mount quietly. B Shinn further stated today, when First Seal commenced well, he elected to take advantage of this and consequently rode the mare in a prominent position where it travelled well. Trainer Mr J Thompson confirmed the nature of the instructions issued to be B Shinn and advised the mare had now been retired.

RACE 10: TAB Sapphire Stakes (Group 2) 1200m

Painted Firetail – slow to begin.
Unequivocal – slow to begin.
Hieroglyphics – when questioned, rider C Williams said from the outside barrier his mount was a little slow to begin and soon after was shifted in across behind runners and settled at the rear of the field. He added approaching and rounding the home turn his mount commenced to make steady ground and, as the mare only possesses a short sprint, he did not ride it out fully until after the 200m once he secured clear running. He said Hieroglyphics responded reasonably, but its run ended short of the line. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Tycoon Tara – brushed the side of its gate and was slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Leami Astray – overraced in the early and middle stages.
Zestful – overraced early and middle stages. Near the 800m the mare, which was overracing, was steadied away from the heels of Secret Agenda (D Oliver), which shifted in when not clear. D Oliver was advised to exercise more care. Near the 150m had to be steadied when Hieroglyphics (C Williams) shifted out slightly. C Williams was advised to exercise more care.
Missrock – shifted out under pressure in the straight, obliging its rider D Lane to change the whip into his left hand near the 100m.
