Vet Notes

O'Lordy (Race 2) – slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed it to have lost its off-fore plate in running.
Siren's Fury (Race 3) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly had dislodged a tooth. Trainer Mr J Coyle advised he will report back in the days subsequent.
Bolord (Race 6) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its off-hind plate on running.
Happy Hannah (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and respiratory distress. Stable representative Mr J Beer was advised a veterinary clearance would be required, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to the mare racing again.
Slow Pace (Race 7) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had struck itself on both fore-pasterns and was lame in the off-fore leg. Mr Lees was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Slow Pace racing again.
Lucky Fish (Race 8) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have been galloped on to both hind legs.

Penalties & Fines

R Hutchings, rider of Viridine pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that passing the 300m he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Siam, which was checked and lost its running. R Hutchings' licence to riding in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 7 May 2017 and to expire on Sunday, 14 May 2017, on which day he may ride.
T Berry, rider of Lunar Duchess pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii)) and was fined $500.
G Schofield, scheduled rider of Power Law was fined the sum of $300 under AR120(b).

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Fresh For Kids Handicap 1100m

Poetic Charmer – began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Viridine. Raced keenly in the middle stages. When questioned in respect to his riding of the colt, M Bell stated that his instructions were to ensure that he was able to obtain cover, as the colt had an inclination to race keenly in its trials. He said accordingly he allowed Envy Of All to cross his mount in the early stages, whereby it then travelled well in behind that runner. When questioned regarding his riding in the straight as to whether there was an opportunity to improve into a run between Envy Of All and Ipso Facto leaving the 400m, M Bell stated on straightening, when there was no run available directly in advance of him, he elected to shift to his outside with a view to improving to the outside of Ipso Facto. He said, as he contemplated shifting to the outside of Ipso Facto, a run directly in advance of him between Envy Of All and Ipso Facto developed, however, as he was looking to go to the outside Ipso Facto, he did not observe that run until the eventual winner Viridine had shifted out and secured that position. M Bell further added that, whilst Poetic Charmer then took some time to respond to his urgings to finish the race off, he was able to balance up inside the 200m, whereby his mount found the line reasonably well. Stewards advised M Bell in their view he had made an error of judgement in not endeavouring to obtain a run between Ipso Facto and Envy Of All sooner than he attempted to and that he should ensure, as a senior rider, that he avails himself of all opportunities when they present. In deciding to take no action against M Bell, Stewards could not be satisfied that his riding had resulted in Poetic Charmer not finishing in its best possible position.
Leogang – slow to begin. From its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners. Held up for clear running until passing the 300m and when shifting out at that point to improve made contact with Manipulate.
Siam – began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with the hindquarter of Envy Of All, which in turn shifted in and brushed Madame Moustache, which had been slightly slow to begin. R Hutchings (Viridine) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that passing the 300m he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Siam, which was checked and lost its running. Madame Moustache – raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
Viridine – raced keenly in the early and middle stages and rounding the first turn became unbalanced when being restrained by its rider to take cover. Held up for clear running until approaching the 250m. Passing the 200m made contact with Ipso Facto on two occasions due to both horses shifting ground. Rider R Hutchings was dislodged after passing the winning post and did not suffer any injuries. R Hutchings was cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements by the Club's Medical Officer.
Manipulate – made the home turn awkwardly. Rider J Parr stated he was under no specific instructions as to where to settle the colt. He said when his mount began only fairly he elected to ride it back in the field to ensure that he obtained cover. He added when the pace was only moderate in the early stages his mount was inclined to race a little keen in the run and making the home turn became awkward on the heels of Leogang and was shifted wider. J Parr said, considering the tempo of the race and the run the colt was afforded throughout the event, he felt it had some merit.
Ipso Facto – passing the 200m made contact with Viridine on two occasions due to both horses shifting ground.
Blonde Intuition – rider T Clark stated the only explanation he could offer for the poor performance was that the filly was stepping up in grade today and may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr N Paine expressed disappointment in the performance of the filly. He said Blonde Intuition will now undergo a thorough veterinary examination on return to the stables, the results of which he will report to the Stewards, together with the future race plans for the filly.

RACE 2: TAB Highway Handicap 1200m

Buddy Honest – after being fractious in the barriers and getting its off-foreleg briefly over the barriers, the gelding was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and cleared to run.
Lunar Duchess - prior to the declaration of weight, the Stewards identified from the inquiry room that rider T Berry had struck his mount on 9 occasions prior to the 100m. When Stewards could not be satisfied that Luna Duchess had gained an advantage that resulted in it finishing in 4th placing in the race, in accordance with AR168(2) they therefore declined to exercise their powers under AR137A(9) and did not proceed with a formal objection. At a subsequent inquiry T Berry pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii)) and was fined $500.
Academy Hill – blundered on jumping.

Running Broke – slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Loves A Hassle – when questioned in respect to his mount racing back in the field, App. J Innes Jr stated he was issued with no specific instructions other than to have his mount settle where comfortable. He said from the wide draw when it was apparent he was not going to be able to take up a more forward position, he elected to ride Loves A Hassle at the rear of the field to give it the best opportunity to finish the race off.
Atlantic Sentinel – near the 1000m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Tudor Sunrise (B El-Issa), which shifted in when not clear. B El-Issa was reprimanded. A short distance later when the tempo steadied Atlantic Sentinel had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Tudor Sunrise and had shifted out making the first turn wider.
Viscount Lad – overraced in the early and middle stages.
Tudor Sunrise – raced wide without cover throughout.

RACE 3: Sydney Markets Foundation Handicap 1800m

Power Law – as G Schofield was overweight, permission was granted for J Ford to be substituted as the rider of the colt. G Schofield was fined the sum of $300 under AR120(b). Rider J Ford stated his mount raced too keenly in the run and as a consequence was left without a finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Cummings agreed with the views of J Ford that Power Law was not assisted by racing keenly in the run and undertook to report back on the future race plans for the colt.
Top Of The Range – the gelding, which was fractious en route to the course and abraded its near-side hip, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and cleared to run. Furthermore, the gelding was fractious on leaving the enclosure and struck its off-side hip on the enclosure, was examined on arrival at the barriers and cleared to run. Raced keenly in the middle stages and near the 1200m was steadied and shifted in abruptly away from the heels of Power Law. Under pressure in the straight was inclined to hang in.
Oklahoma Girl – slow to begin.
Octavian Augustus – slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early stages.
Travancore – slow to begin. Rider M Bell stated his mount never really travelled at any stage of the event and was inclined to change stride on a number of occasions. He said under pressure in the straight Travancore was disappointing in its failure to respond. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr B Heys advised the colt had pleased the stable since its win at Canberra on 21 April 2017. He said the only explanation he could offer was that Travancore had not handled today's step up in grade and distance and he would now drop the colt back in grade and distance for its next start. Mr Heys undertook to report back to the Stewards the results of a veterinary examination on Travancore, which would be conducted in the days subsequent.
Black And Gold – making the first turn was steadied from the heels of Lamma Hilton and shifted out making the turn awkwardly. Hung in under pressure in the straight, obliging its rider to stop riding and straighten on two occasions near the 300m and again near the 100m.
Siren's Fury – rider J Parr stated, whilst he intended to settle towards the rear of the field, his mount ran out at the start and he lost a number of lengths and consequently settled further back than anticipated. He said whilst he was of the opinion Siren's Fury had run out today's 1800m, he felt it was one-paced during the event and in his view would be better suited by being brought back in distance, which would give it the opportunity to be more effective in finishing the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly had dislodged a tooth. Trainer Mr J Coyle advised he will report back in the days subsquent.

RACE 4: Freshmark Handicap 1200m

Passage Of Time – began very awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Mercurial Lad, which was then taken in onto Quick Feet, which was also bumped and became unbalanced.
Kitteau – began awkwardly. Rider J Ford stated his mount sweated up badly before the event, missed the start and raced further back than intended. He added Kitteau never travelled at any stage of the event and was somewhat disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Ms H Devlin, representing trainer Mr J Pride, undertook to report back on the condition of Kitteau subsequent to the event.
Fifty Ways – after being slow to begin, shifted out and made contact with the hindquarter of Samadoubt. Raced keenly in the early stages.
Pedway – began awkwardly. App. J Innes Jr stated that over the final 50m he became concerned with the colt's action and breathing and for this reason he desisted from riding it out. Stable representative Mr S Alexiou advised that Pedway will now undergo a through veterinary examination, including an endoscopic exam. Stewards asked Mr Alexiou to forward the results of that examination to them in the days subsequent.
Calabasas –App. A Adkins stated he was not issued with any specific instructions other than if the pace was solid in the early stages he should ride his mount a little more conservatively. He said, after his mount was only fairly away, when the tempo appeared to be strong he restrained and took up the option of riding the gelding with cover.
New Universe – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners.
Quick Feet – raced wide without cover throughout. App. N Heywood stated his mount was caught wide throughout the event in a fast tempo and as a consequence was not able to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Niccobelle – pulled hard in the early and middle stages.
Mercurial Lad – hung out badly from the 900m and proved difficult to ride. Making the first turn ran out when being restrained from the heels of Kawaikini.

RACE 5: Foodbank Handicap 1350m

Signposted – whilst being placed into the barriers it was noted that the Norton bit, which had been fitted to the gelding, required refitting. As a consequence the start of this race was delayed some two minutes. Stable representative Mr C Lees stated that he checked the gear prior to Signposted leaving the mounting enclosure and was of the view it was correctly fitted.
Kingsguard – knuckled on jumping, shifted in and made contact with Careless. Careless then shifted in and bumped Lofty's Menu.
Takewing – slow to begin.
Better Not Blue – slow to begin.
Berry Delicious – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners. When making ground over the concluding stages came close to the heels of Better Not Blue and consequently was not ridden out.
Cannyescence – raced keenly in the early and middle stages and rounding the first turn was steadied away from the heels of Careless (App. R King), which shifted in when not clear. App. King was advised to exercise more care.
Roaring To Win – rider B Avdulla stated the gelding's best form was on rain affected going and he felt on today's Good (3) surface it did not stretch out under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr J Beer undertook to report back on the condition of Roaring To Win subsequent to the event.

RACE 6: Everybody's Body Handicap 1500m

Top Ravine – slow to begin.
Brother In Arms – began awkwardly, shifted out and made heavy contact with Chandana, which blundered as a result when taken towards the heels of Dreamforce.
Speed Hero – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners. When questioned regarding her riding, App. R King stated from her wide draw her instructions were to settle at the back of the field. She said, after following Our Beatnik throughout the event, near the 600m when Our Beatnik shifted out to go forward, she allowed her mount to improve up to the inside of that runner to save ground. She added on straightening she then shifted her mount to the outside of Our Beatnik to obtain clear running near the 300m, whereby it finished the race off well. Trainer Mr J Coyle confirmed the instructions issued and expressed satisfaction with the manner in which the gelding was ridden. Stewards advised App. King that in their view she had made an error of judgement by allowing her mount to improve to the outside of Out Beatnik, which resulted in her not obtaining clear running until near the 300m. She was advised her best option would have been to follow Our Beatnik into the straight, which would have allowed her to immediately improve to that runner's outside on straightening.
Our Beatnik – when being restrained to find cover in the early stages raced keenly.
Roguish – raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
Chandana – raced wide without cover.
Pianissimo – passing the 250m had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Colonel Custer and La Courbette when La Courbette shifted in. Pianissimo was then shifted back to the inside of Colonel Custer near the 200m to obtain clear running.
Dreamforce – laid in under pressure in the straight.
Bolord – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its off-hind plate on running.

RACE 7: Sydney Markets Limited Lord Mayor's Cup (Listed) 2000m

Happy Hannah – Stewards acceded to a request from co-trainer Mr P Snowden to have M Bell ride the mare 1 kilogram over its allotted weight due to the unavailability of a senior rider. An announcement was made to this effect after acceptances were declared on Wednesday, 3 May 2017. Rider M Bell could offer no excuse for today's disappointing performance and indicated the mare travelled well on the back of a solidly run event, however was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and respiratory distress. Stable representative Mr J Beer was advised a veterinary clearance would be required, including the results of an endoscopic examination, prior to the mare racing again.
Beyond Thankful – slow to begin. From its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners.
Slow Pace – slow to begin. Raced wide without cover throughout. App. R King stated her mount was caught three wide without cover for the majority of the event, however more so the gelding was not suited by today's Good (3) track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had struck itself on both fore-pasterns and was lame in the off-fore leg. Mr Lees was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Slow Pace racing again.
New Tipperary – bumped by Jessy Belle near the 300m. Laid in under pressure in the straight.
Danjeu – held up for some distance approaching the 200m after being disappointed for a run between Big Blue and New Tipperary, which shifted out, and was obliged to shift back to the inside of the heels of New Tipperary passing the 150m in order to improve.

RACE 8: Toyota Material Handling Handicap 1200m

Final Decision – blundered on jumping. Did not obtain clear running over the final 300m and could not be tested.
Frill Seeking – began awkwardly and then was crowded for room by Elemenohpee, which shifted in.
Untamed Diamond – raced keenly in the early and middle stages and, after being crossed by Sweet Serendipity rounding the first turn, shifted out and in so doing hampered and carried Elemenohpee wider. Elemenohpee then bumped Yuma Desert.
Yuma Desert – raced wide without cover throughout.
Wild 'N' Famous – rounding the first turn improved onto the heels of Lucky Fish, which was checked. Held up for clear running until passing the 150m.
Torpenhow – near the 100m had to be steadied when crowded between Wild 'N' Famous and Frill Seeking (App. N Heywood), which shifted in. App. Heywood was reprimanded and advised he must stop riding and straighten his mounts when they commence to shift ground. In assessing penalty, Stewards found that Wild 'N' Famous had improved into a narrow run between Torpenhow and Lucky Fish and this had contributed to the interference when Wild 'N' Famous was taken out by Lucky Fish.
Sweet Serendipity – rider A Hyeronimus stated that his mount was required to do some work to find the lead in the early stages, but travelled comfortably once it was able to obtain that position. The only explanation he could offer was today's 61 kilograms may not have assisted and in his view the gelding may have come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Coyle concurred with the views of A Hyeronimus and advised he would report back on the future race plans for the gelding in the days subsequent.
Lucky Fish – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have been galloped on to both hind legs.

RACE 9: Your Local Greengrocer Handicap 1100m

Butterboom – slow to begin (2L). A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Machinegun Jubs – began awkwardly and then was crowded for room between Rose Of Man and Nardoo, both of which began awkwardly.
Alpen Rose – raced keenly in the early stages.
Rose Of Man – raced keenly in the middle stages and for some distance near the 800m was restrained away from the heels of Butterboom. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the straight.
Nardoo – raced wide without cover.
Love's A Fantasy – soon after the start was steadied and shifted in behind Bel Selene, which shifted out slightly. Love's A Fantasy which had been held up for clear running, became awkward on the heels of Nardoo near the 300m, before shifting to its outside to obtain clear running.
Rock On Zariz – held up for clear running until passing the 200m.
Stillettoed Vixen – when questioned regarding the mare racing more forward, G Schofield stated he was instructed to ride his mount in a midfield position. He said from his wide draw, when his mount commenced well, he initially looked to find cover, however when caught wide, he then allowed his mount to stride forward in an endeavour to avoid covering additional ground. G Schofield added that he was unable to cross runners to his inside and as a consequence was obliged to race three wide without cover throughout the event.
