Vet Notes

Ashkannd (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained abrasions to both hind bumpers.
Our Boy Nicholas (Race 5) - a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its off-fore plate in running.
Oakfield Midnight (Race 8) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.

Penalties & Fines

H Bowman, rider of Upscale pleaded guilty to charges under AR137A(5)(a)i) and ((ii) in that he used the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m (4 more than permitted), inclusive of 7 successive strikes. H Bowman was fined $500 under AR137A(5)(a)(i) and was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii)

Summary of Races

RACE 1: TAB Handicap 1350m

Condor – began awkwardly.
Hualalai – when questioned, rider T Berry stated that his intention was to find cover today, which were similar instructions to when the colt raced first up at Kembla Grange on 23 May 2017. He added in its preliminary he ensured his mount was given a good warm up so that it was able to obtain a prominent position with cover. T Berry said his mount jumped awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Emperor Harada, but then did not show any early pace and for this reason he allowed it to drift back in the field, whereby he was able to shift his mount in to obtain cover. He further stated that near the 800m he elected to shift off three wide, whereby he followed Bull Market into the race and, after shifting to the outside of that runner soon after straightening, Hualalai commenced to make ground. He said that under pressure in the straight his mount was inclined to lay in and near the 200m ran in when struck with the whip, resulting in him changing his whip to the right hand. He added Hualalai continued to lay in for the remainder of the event and in his view its run may have come to an end near the 50m, particularly with the colt stepping up to 1350m today. He said Hualalai may benefit with the addition of blinkers. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Bull Market – slow to begin. Hampered near the 200m when Hualalai (T Berry) shifted in whilst laying in. T Berry was advised to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Momentum To Win – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in across behind runners shortly after the start.
Emperor Harada – raced wide without cover throughout.
Bidwee – rider J Collett stated his mount travelled comfortably outside the leader Gaulois, but was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. He added the only explanation he could offer for today’s performance was that Bidwee had failed to handle today’s heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes was asked to report back on the post-race condition of the colt.

RACE 2: Australia Turf Club Handicap 1400m

Travancore – slow to begin.
High Mist – slow to begin. Laid in in the early and middle stages Soon after straightening, when Just Dreaming moved to the outside of Arbeitsam to obtain clear running, High Mist became momentarily unbalanced.
Arbeitsam – when questioned regarding her riding, particularly in the middle stages in respect to the quick tempo set, App. R King stated her instructions were to lead and to ensure that her mount ran at a solid tempo throughout the race. She said her instructions were issued on the basis that at its last start at Rosehill on 3 June 2017 the connections were of the opinion that, as Arbeitsam only set a moderate tempo and was somewhat one-paced, it could not quicken in the straight after leading. She added, after commencing well, she was able to hold the lead in the early stages and, in accordance with her instructions, allowed her mount to roll along at a solid tempo. App. King further stated, after being advised of the times the gelding set in the middle stages (1200m to 1000m 11.36, 1000m to 800m 11.83, 800m to 600m 11.62 and 600m to 400m 11.90), she agreed with the Stewards that in hindsight the tempo set in the middle stages was too quick as her intention was to ride her mount at sections slower than she had set. Co-trainer Mr A Bott confirmed the instructions issued and also confirmed the reasons for issuing such instructions. Whilst the Stewards acknowledged that App. King had been issued instructions to set a solid tempo, was advised that, having regard to the mid race sectionals, she had set too quick a tempo. Stewards advised App. King that, whilst accepting her relative inexperience, she must show far greater judgement than she did on this occasion, particularly as she gains further experience and she should ride her mounts in a manner to ensure that they gain full opportunity to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Uptown Lad – rider J Ford stated that his mount was not suited today by the heavy track conditions and in his opinion the gelding has come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mrs K Waugh concurred with the view expressed by its rider and undertook to spell Uptown Lad.

RACE 3: TAB Highway Handicap 1500m

Zamex – slow to begin.
Trying – slow to begin.
Murrmaid – began awkwardly, shifted out and made heavy contact with Strada Prince. App. B Ryan stated he had intended to take up a forward position on the filly, but his mount was slow to begin and then made heavy contact with Strada Prince, which resulted in it losing ground. He said as a result he settled much further back than anticipated, however his mount was still somewhat disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. App. Ryan added the only explanation he could offer was that Murrmaid was somewhat stirred up prior to today’s race and in his opinion was not entirely comfortable on today’s heavy track. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Big Don – began awkwardly.
Out Of The Night – raced wide without cover for the majority of the event. Making the home turn was taken wider when Big Don (App. R King) shifted out when struck with the whip. App. King was advised to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 4: Pro Rata ATC Membership On Sale sprint 1200m

Upscale - prior to the declaration of weight, the Stewards identified from the inquiry room that rider H Bowman had struck his mount on 9 occasions prior to the 100m. When Stewards could not be satisfied that Upscale had gained an advantage that resulted in it finishing in 3rd placing in the race, in accordance with AR168(2) they therefore declined to exercise their powers under AR137A(9) and did not proceed with a formal objection. At a subsequent inquiry H Bowman pleaded guilty to a charges under AR137A(5)(a)i) and ((ii) in that he used the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m (4 more than permitted), inclusive of 7 successive strikes. H Bowman was fined $500 under AR137A(5)(a)(i) and was reprimanded under AR137A(5)(a)(ii)
Feelin The Love – began awkwardly. Near the 300m shifted back to the inside of Validate to continue into clear running.
Just Stellar – slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Nonpareil – slow to begin.

RACE 5: TAB Rewards Handicap 1500m

Ashkannd – began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained abrasions to both hind bumpers.
Liapari – began awkwardly.
Our Boy Nicholas - slow to begin, then crowded for room. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding lost its off-fore plate in running.
Louie Sea Kay – began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Kingsguard - began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with Count Of Limonade. Rider C Reith stated his mount was unsuited by being pressured in the lead, particularly when Signposted was racing in advance of his mount to his outside, which resulted in Kingsguard racing too keenly in the run and as a result his mount was left without a finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Reiby The Red – shifted out at the start and made contact with Moss ‘N’ Dale.
Moss ‘N’ Dale – linking up to the course proper near the 1400m blundered. Near the 50m, when under pressure, shifted out, resulting in its rider App. J Martin having to stop riding and straighten his mount.
Count Of Limonade – raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.
Magical Stance – incined to lay in under pressure in the early part of the straight when being directed to the outside of Reiby The Red to obtain clear running.
Obsidian – had some difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 300m.
Signposted – App. R King stated her instructions were to lead from a wide draw and she went forward to take up a position outside Kingsguard in the early stages. She said near the 1100m she commenced to allow her mount to stride forward with the intention of leading, but when Kingsguard maintained a position to her inside she was unable to cross that runner and, when she was of the view the tempo was strong, she was reluctant to ride her mount forward and make too much use of it to cross. App. King added as a consequence she was obliged to race outside Kingsguard throughout the race and in her opinion the run of Signposted was still disappointing in that it was under pressure soon after straightening. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 6: Kensei Handicap 2000m

So Willie – slow to begin.
Montau – slow to begin.
Mighty Lucky – slow to begin.
Iggi Pop – soon after the start was steadied away from the heels of Supply And Demand when that runner shifted out away from Foreign Prince. Near the 350m was inconvenienced when So Willie shifted to the outside of Destiny’s Kiss to improve.
Alegria – when the pace steadied leaving the 1400m Supply And Demand commenced to overrace and was steadied to avoid the heels of Tucanchoo (T Berry), which shifted in when not quite clear. As a consequence Supply And Demand shifted three wide for a short distance, which then resulted in Montauk, which was following Supply And Demand, also shifting off three deep. When App. A Adkins, rider of Foreign Prince and T Berry, rider of Tucanchoo, then steadied the tempo, Supply And Demand shifted in to re-establish its position on the back of Tucanchoo, which resulted in Montauk, which was following, also shifting in. Iggi Pop, which was following Montauk, then had to check away from the heels of that runner, shifted in, resulting in Alegria also being checked when crowded onto the running rail. T Berry was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. In addition Berry and App. A Adkins were spoken relative to steading the tempo too quickly. Rider B Avdulla stated, although his mount struck interference mid race and was somewhat unsuited in the run, he felt the performance was still disappointing in that it failed to respond to his riding at any stage over the final 600m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Destiny’s Kiss – near the 1300m was restrained away from the heels of Iggi Pop and was shifted three wide. Destiny’s Kiss then raced wide without cover for the remainder of the event.
Supply And Demand – approaching the 1000m was steadied away from the heels of Tucanchoo, which shifted out, resulting in Destiny’s Kiss briefly being taken four wide.

RACE 7: Schweppes Handicap 1100m

Last Witness – knuckled on jumping and subsequently began awkwardly and made contact with the hindquarter of Pioneering and lost ground (2L).
Raido – began awkwardly.
Sir Plush – made contact with Zin Zan Eddie at the start.
Zin Zan Eddie – made contact with Sir Plush at the start.
Magic Alibi – raced wide without cover from the 800m.
Secret Tail – App. J Innes Jr stated his mount travelled just in behind the pace, but was unable to quicken soon after straightening. He said the only explanation he could offer was that Secret Trail was advantaged last start by the strong early tempo and was able to finish the race off and may not have been able to handle the step up in grade today. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Pioneering – when questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the straight, H Bowman stated, with the strong early tempo, his mount was not travelling well when the field entered the straight. He said for this reason, rather than placing his mount under full pressure, he endeavoured to hold his mount together on the heavy track conditions and it was not until the 200m where he felt the gelding was balanced sufficiently to place it under full pressure and ride it out with the whip, whereby the mare finished the race off in a satisfactory manner, albeit one-paced. Trainer Mr C Waller stated that Pioneering had pleased the stable leading into today’s race subsequent to having bone chips removed from both front fetlocks and he had been satisfied with its two trials leading into today’s race. Mr Waller said the mare was unsuited racing first up today on the Heavy (8) track conditions and also reported to Stewards that Pioneering had lost its near-fore plate, which occurred soon after the start. Mr Waller undertook to report back to the Stewards on the post-race condition of the mare.

RACE 8: #Theraces Handicap 1800m

King’s Officer – began awkwardly. Near the 200m was steadied when crowded for room between Devil Hawk, which shifted in slightly away from Speed Hero, and Noumea (App. N Heywood), which shifted out under pressure. In the circumstances App. Heywood was reprimanded.
Springbok Flyer – began awkwardly, shifted in and made contact with the hindquarter of Carzoff.
Speed Hero – from its wide draw was shifted in behind runners shortly after the start.
Collateral – raced wide without cover throughout the early and middle stages.
Carzoff – when placed under pressure near the 150m shifted out, resulting in H Bowman having to stop riding and straighten. In this incident Collateral shifted out away from Carzoff, resulting in Speed Hero having to be steadied away from the heels of Collateral. When questioned regarding his riding from the 800m, H Bowman stated that, after having a trailing position in the run behind Multifacets, when that runner went forward, Noumea, which was positioned to his inside, shifted off the rail, resulting in Carzoff being taken three wide and being exposed without cover near the 800m. He said, as he was of the view that Noumea would continue to shift off, resulting in his mount being taken excessively wide, he elected to improve into the race to prevent Noumea potentially moving wider again and carrying him to a four side position, resulting in Carzoff taking up a position three wide outside Multifacets near the 600m. H Bowman stated throughout the event Carzoff raced greenly, lacked maturity and would be better suited with further racing experience.
Brogue – A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Oakfield Midnight – App. R King reported that she held some concerns in respect to the action of the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.

RACE 9: tab.com.au Handicap 1350m

Araldo Junior – the gelding, which had aggravated an abrasion to its off-foreleg en route to the course, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Officer and cleared suitable to race.
Raijinz – knuckled on jumping.
Celtic Tiger – began awkwardly and lost ground. On two occasions near the 500m blundered. For some distance near the 200m was held up for clear running between Pick Me Up and Pakaya Prince, which shifted in. Celtic Tiger was then shifted to the outside of Pakaya Prince to obtain clear running. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Helensburgh Ham – made contact with Oscar’s Choice at the start. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which weakened in the straight, did not reveal any abnormalities.
Oscar’s Choice - made contact with Helensburgh Ham at the start.
Pick Me Up – from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. In the early part of the straight had some difficulty secure clear running.
Lay Down The Law - from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start.
Radical Impact – for some distance inside the 200m could not be tested when placed in restricted room between Tatoosh and Invincible Knight, which shifted in.
Pakaya Prince – rider B Avdulla stated his instructions were to go forward from his wide draw, but when Raijinz and Helensburgh Ham held the lead to his inside, he was obliged to race three wide without cover throughout the event. He added he contemplated allowing his mount to stride forward to attempt to cross the early leaders, but when he was of the opinion the early tempo of the race was fast, he elected to remain three deep, whereby his mount was racing comfortably. B Avdulla said his decision to do so was also influenced by the fact that a number of runners today had made wide runs from the 600m and in particular shifted off in the straight to secure better ground.
