Vet Notes

Regal Cannon (Race 1) – The gelding was a late withdrawal at 12.41pm on veterinary advice. Co-trainer Mr A Bott was advised he must provide a veterinary clearance and Regal Cannon trial satisfactorily prior to being permitted to race again
Quantrill (Race 2) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had suffered a bleeding attack for the first time. Trainer Mr M Smith was advised of the provisions of AR53(2) and the gelding will incur a three month period from racing.
Parker’s Piece (Race 2) - a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the nearforeleg. Trainer Mr K Lees was advised he must provide a veterinary clearance prior to Parker’s Piece being permitted to race again.
Appoint Percy (Race 4) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to the near-hind fetlock.
Miss Parkin (Race 5) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery and lameness to the off-foreleg. Trainer Mr D Kelly was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Miss Parkin racing again.
Violent Snow (Race 9) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed mare to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and showing signs of thumps. Trainer Mr J Warren was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare racing again.
Reiby Rampart (Race 9) – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare bled for the first time. Trainer Mr J Attard was advised of the provisions of AR53(2) and the gelding will incur a three month period from racing

Penalties & Fines

H Bowman, rider of Wild ‘N’ Famous pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift out and crowded Most Exalted, which was checked and lost its running. H Bowman’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 30 July 2017 and to expire on Sunday, 13 August 2017, on which day he may ride.

Summary of Races

RACE 1: Welcome Rydalmere CBC Handicap 1500m

Regal Cannon – after being placed in the barriers, became fractious and got its off-side front leg cast over the divider. The gelding was a late withdrawal at 12.41pm on veterinary advice. The Stewards ruled that all monies invested on Regal Cannon be refunded in full and that all successful wagers made prior to 12.41pm be subject to the following deductions in the face value of each ticket: 1st D’Argento 0 cents win, 1 cent place 2nd Runaway 4 cents place 3rd Almighty 5 cents place Co-trainer Mr A Bott was advised he must provide a veterinary clearance and Regal Cannon trial satisfactorily prior to being permitted to race again.
Colesberg – slow to begin. When questioned, rider J Collett stated he had been instructed to ride the gelding conservatively in about a midfield position and he had been asked to do this as the connections felt Colesberg would benefit by being able to settle, which would enable it to finish its race off. He added, after his mount began only fairly, he received some pressure from D’Argento shortly after the start, which ultimately resulted in the gelding racing at the rear of the field. Trainer Mr D Payne stated that, although the gelding was a change of tactics at its most recent start, in his opinion it was ridden contrary to the pre-race intention in that it raced outside the leader. He said when ridden in this manner Colesberg failed to finish the race off and for this reason it was to be ridden quieter today. Whilst accepting that Colesberg was ridden slightly further forward, which was contrary to his wishes, nonetheless Mr Payne was advised that he should have informed the Stewards that the gelding would be ridden conservatively today and was reminded of his obligations to ensure that he notifies the Stewards of any change of tactics.
All Too Soon – began awkwardly and despite being ridden along shortly after the start failed to muster speed and when caught wide was restrained to the rear of the field. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly, which failed to close off today, did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Payne advised, having regard to the filly’s performance today, it would now be spelled.
Condor – made contact with Almighty at the start. Near the 1200m brushed the running rail and became unbalanced. After riding in this race rider R Hutchings became unwell, was examined and treated by the Club's Medical Officer.
Almighty – made contact with Condor at the start. Near the 400m shifted to the inside of Runaway to continue into clear running.
Hostwin Meraki – when questioned, rider J Parr stated, with the gelding stepping up in distance and, he had been instructed to ride his mount with cover if possible from the outside barrier. He said when the gelding began particularly well and showed good early speed, rather than endeavouring to steady and seek cover, he elected in the circumstances to permit his mount to stride forward where it ultimately raced outside the leader. He added, whilst he was much further forward than the pre-race expectation, nonetheless he felt his mount’s chances would be better served by allowing it to improve easily, as it did on this occasion particularly. Trainer Mr G Moore reported that Hostwin Meraki had sustained an abrasion to its off-hind leg. Mr Moore was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again.

RACE 2: ATC Owner Benefits Card Handicap 1100m

Rockafella - from its wide barrier steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start.
Cadogan – after being slow to begin, was checked when tightened for room between Akasaki and Quantrill, both of which shifted ground.
Akasaki – began awkwardly and then was slow to muster speed despite being ridden along.
Difficult To Get – in the early stages had to be restrained midfield to obtain cover.
Wide Acclaim – near the 300m shifted in and made contact with Clear The Beach. When questioned, App. D Panya stated she was instructed to settle in second position if possible, as she envisaged that Clear The Beach would lead this event. She said in the early stages her mount, which can race fiercely, settled half a length back from Clear The Beach, however when the rider of Clear The Beach steadied the tempo near the 800m, Wide Acclaim commenced to race very keenly and despite her attempting a second hold in an endeavour to further restrain her mount at that point, it continued to race fiercely with her. App Panya added and that rather than continuing to steady Wide Acclaim when that she was in advance of Clear The Beach, she considered in the circumstances it preferable to allow her mount to travel freely, albeit in the lead.
Quantrill – a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had suffered a bleeding attack for the first time. Trainer Mr M Smith was advised of the provisions of AR53(2) and the gelding will incur a three month period from racing.

RACE 3: Sydney Spring Carnival On Sale Plate 1400m

Insensata – slow to begin. When questioned, rider A Hyeronimus explained that as expected the filly, from its awkward barrier, settled towards the rear of the field. He said with Arbeitsam establishing a solid tempo throughout the early and middle stages, his mount was under pressure from about the 800m to maintain its position and keep in touch with the field, which resulted in his mount being off the bridle for the major part of the race. He said with Arbeitsam, the eventual winner, recording 34.08 seconds for the last 600m, it proved too difficult for his mount to make appreciable ground and, having regard to the manner in which the race had been run, he felt Insensata’s performance was reasonable in the circumstances. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Cosmic Engine – began awkwardly.
Reach For Heaven – slow to begin. Raced keenly in the middle stages.
Star Of Monsoon - from its wide barrier steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 4: TAB Highway Plate 1500m

Croix De Vie – slow to begin, was slow to muster speed despite being ridden along and lost ground (3L).
Chadana – slow to begin and shortly after the start was crowded for room between My Tagoson and Force Of Magic, which was taken out by Nic’s Vendetta. Rounding the home turn had to be steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of Appoint Percy. Chadana then was badly held up for clear running until approaching the 100m.
Hussonplaza – slow to begin. Rider G Schofield reported he felt something was amiss with his mount in the straight. He said he became increasingly concerned with the action of the gelding and for this reason he eased his mount down over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr S Jones was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Hussonplaza racing again.
Nic’s Vendetta – after overracing in the early and middle stages, was then allowed to stride forward and assume a position outside the leader near the 900m.
Force Of Magic – for some distance in the middle stages raced fiercely and refused to settle. Near the 300m was crowded for room between Appoint Percy, which shifted out slightly, and Prada Miss (H Bowman), which shifted in momentarily. As H Bowman immediately corrected his mount and relieved the tightening, no action was taken. When Force Of Magic made contact with Appoint Percy that runner also became unbalanced.
Caesar’s Ghost – which was awkwardly placed near the 800m, had to be steadied when crowded for room between Prada Miss and My Tagoson, which shifted out slightly. Laid in under pressure in the straight.
Jackknife – approaching and rounding the home turn the gelding, which was racing close to the heels of Bunny Bad Girl, had to be restrained. Then experienced difficulty obtaining clear running until approaching the 100m.
My Tagoson – laid in over the final 200m.
Prada Miss – raced wide without cover throughout.
Appoint Percy – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, B Avdulla explained his mount travelled well until approaching the home turn in a one out one back position. He said, after shifting to the outside of Nic’s Vendetta on the home turn he was under hard riding to improve and the gelding was a beaten conveyance at the 200m. He added in the run to the line Appoint Percy was yielding ground quickly, however he could detect nothing discernible with its action on return to scale. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to the near-hind fetlock.

RACE 5: #Theraces Handicap 1200m

Miss Parkin – after arriving on course the filly had both front plates replated. The Club's Veterinary Officer reported that, whilst Miss Parkin did not have the most fluent action, nonetheless it was passed suitable to race after a further veterinary inspection at the barrier. Near the 200m was inconvenienced when Slumber Party (B Avdulla) shifted out when not quite clear. B Avdulla was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when crossing runners in similar circumstances. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor post-race recovery and lameness to the off-foreleg. Trainer Mr D Kelly was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Miss Parkin racing again.
Second Step – bumped at the start by Pandeia, which shifted out. Near the 150m was steadied to avoid the heels of Slumber Party (B Avdulla), which was continuing to shift out under pressure and did so when insufficiently clear. B Avdulla was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear in similar circumstances.
Slumber Party – began awkwardly and shifted in.
Faith’s Encore – slow to begin and then was crowded for room between Suspenders and Irithea, both of which shifted ground. Shortly after the start was steadied when racing in restricted room inside Suspenders.
Alluvion - from its wide barrier steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start.
Suspenders – got its head up in the early stages when being restrained.
Vienna Romance – in the middle stages raced keenly and for some distance approaching the 600m had to be restrained for the heels of Lady Chalfont.
Feirin – near the 50m was steadied to avoid the heels of Vienna Romance (J Ford), which shifted out whilst being ridden along. J Ford was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground and on this occasion he should have stopped riding his mount and corrected it prior to it encroaching the line of Feirin.
Pandeia – raced wide without cover throughout.
I’m Imogen – when questioned, App. A Adkins stated from his wide barrier today he had been instructed to ride his mount in a midfield position if possible. He said he was further instructed not to pressure the filly and contingent on the manner in which it began would dictate his position in the race. He added his mount began quite well and, as he was mindful of his orders not to pressure his mount, he found himself much further back in the race due to the early race speed. App. Adkins further stated that after the 700m I’m Imogen commenced to race keenly, got its head on the side and was reluctant to maintain a position behind Pandeia. He said he left a trailing position and travelled wide without cover from the 600m, which enabled Faith’s Encore to improve and carry his mount out further approaching the home turn. He added I’m Imogen was then caught wide and continued without cover for the remainder of the event. He said, although the filly was one-paced early in the straight, he felt its effort in closing off was more than acceptable. Trainer Mr B Thompson confirmed the pre-race instructions and conceded that in hindsight, after giving App. Adkins an option to race with cover if the filly was unable to obtain a forward position, he should have notified the Stewards of the alternate instructions. As Mr Thompson had not been penalised previously for failing to notify a change in tactics, the Stewards in the circumstances recorded a reprimand under AR135A against Mr Thompson and reminded him of his obligations to notify the Stewards of any change in tactics in the future.

RACE 6: Schweppes Handicap 2000m

Ashkannd – slow to begin. Raced keenly in the early stages, refused to settle and on a number of occasions was steadied away from the heels of Encosta Line. After the 1500m was allowed to stride forward when continuing to overrace and settled outside the leader. Rounding the home turn the gelding, which was commencing to weaken, got its head on the side and had to be steadied off the heels of More Than Fabulous when taken out slightly by Vaucluse Bay.
Encosta Line – slow to begin. On straightening Encosta Line and Magical Stance made contact as Encosta Line endeavoured to improve between that runner and Zourkhan. Encosta Line was then disappointed for a run and became awkwardly placed close to the heels of Zourkhan a short distance later.
Go Benny – slow to begin.
More Than Fabulous – App. J Innes Jr explained he had been asked to ride his mount in about a midfield position if possible. He said in the early stages the gelding, which generally begins well, did not relax well and despite his efforts to have his mount race with cover he was unable to do so and ultimately raced outside the leader Life O’Brien. He added More Than Fabulous pulled quite hard in the middle stages and only relaxed after the 1400m.
Magical Stance – when questioned, App. A Adkins stated he had been asked by trainer Mr R Quinton to have his mount, if circumstances permitted, in a midfield position, however Magical Stance raced fiercely in the early stages when attempting to secure a position behind Encosta Line. He added when Ashkannd, which was positioned to his inside, maintained its position he was left wider without cover behind midfield in the early stages. App. Adkins further stated that, although he travelled one position further back than intended, he was unable to obtain cover for the major part of the race and this reflected in the finishing position of Magical Stance.
Vassal – close to the winning post the gelding, which was closing the race of reasonably, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Life O’Brien and consequently was not tested in the run to the winning post.
Four Carat – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Zourkhan – rider H Bowman explained his mount raced satisfactorily mid race, but after the 600m did not travel as well as he had hoped and came under pressure prior to the home turn. He said rounding the home turn he was positioned outside More Than Fabulous and his mount had every opportunity to close the race off, but did not respond to his efforts and did not feel particularly genuine in its performance today. H Bowman added that, whilst he is ot familiar with the racing manners of Zourkhan, he felt that the gelding may not have been suited by the firmer surface today. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth stated that Zourkhan had been pleasing in its trackwork leading up to today’s race and had performed well below the stable’s expectations. He undertook to provide a full veterinary report on Zourkhan in the days subsequent.

RACE 7: Winter Challenge (Listed) 1500m

Liapari – Stewards acceded to a request from trainer Mr C Waller to allow B Avdulla ride the gelding half a kilo over the allocated weight due to the unavailability of another senior rider to ride the gelding. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider B Avdulla stated from a wide barrier he anticipated his mount settling at the rear of the field. He said Liapari did not respond to his pressure in the early part of the straight and failed to close the race off. He added, whilst it may appear that Liapari performed below expectations, he believed the race was run in such a manner that it was dominated by on pace runners, which made it difficult for back markers to figure in the finish. B Avdulla further stated that Liapari would be better suited to race over longer distances where it would have more opportunity to settle with a moderate tempo. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
Elle Lou – slow to begin (2L).
Slightly Sweet – slow to begin and then was crowded shortly after the start when Extensible shifted out. After being held up until approaching the 200m, was then checked when disappointed for a run between Classic Uniform and Shiraz. Slightly Sweet was then shifted out across the heels of Classic Uniform to obtain clear running and over the concluding stages raced tight with Sultan Of Swing. As a result of this App. J Innes Jr, rider of Sultan Of Swing, reported he was unable to fully test his mount over the concluding stages due to racing in restricted room.
Centre Pivot – slow to begin. Near the 200m made contact with Snippets Land resulting in Centre Pivot becoming unbalanced.
Gold Symphony – slow to begin.

RACE 8: ATC Thanks Our Owners Handicap 1350

Most Exalted –Stewards considered an objection lodged by App. A Adkins, rider of 2nd placegetter Most Exalted, against Wild ‘N’ Famous being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 200m. On the evidence it was established that Most Exalted, which was positioned in a run directly to the outside of Wild ‘N’ Famous, was carried out by that runner for some distance in the lead up to the 200m and had to be checked when Wild ‘N’ Famous shifted out when not sufficiently clear near the 200m. Bearing in mind the ground lost by Most Exalted in this incident and the manner in which Most Exalted finished the race off, Stewards were of the view that had this interference not occurred, Most Exalted would have finished in advance of Wild ‘N’ Famous and accordingly the objection was upheld. Stewards amended the placings to read: 1st Most Exalted 2nd Wild ‘N’ Famous 3rd Hetty Heights 4th More To Gain At a subsequent inquiry H Bowman pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift out and crowded Most Exalted, which was checked and lost its running. Rock Mylady – began awkwardly and lost ground. Held up in the early part of the straight until shifted to the inside of Suspense to improve.
Embley – slow to begin and then from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start. Rider J Collett explained his mount, from a rearward position, commenced to close the race off well, however after being disappointed for a run to the inside of Rock Mylady early in the straight, he was obliged to continually shift out to obtain clear running. He said his mount was somewhat reluctant to respond to his efforts to shift out. He said nonetheless it was closing the race off strongly, but he was unable to obtain clear running for the major part of the straight.
Most Exalted – slow to begin and then from its wide barrier steadied and shifted in behind runners shortly after the start.
Wouldnt It Be Nice – raced wide without cover throughout and raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
Wild ‘N’ Famous – held up for clear running in the early part of the straight and over the latter stages was inclined to shift ground under pressure and as a result proved difficult to ride out to the winning post. Near the 50m made contact with More To Gain, due to Wild ‘N’ Famous shifting out.
Mogador – had difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 250m.
Suspense – a post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 9: NSW Racehorse Owners Association Trophy 1500m

Labdien – trainer Mr C Waller was fined the sum of $200 under LR35(2) for failing to declare J Collett as the rider of the mare by the prescribed time. Held up for clear running until 300m when shifted to the outside of Elouera to continue into clear running.
Long Time Ago – slow to begin and then took some time to muster speed. Made the home turn awkwardly and laid out.
Lani Girl – slow to begin. Near the 50m Lani Girl and Violent Snow bumped near the 350. For some distance thereafter Lani Girl raced in restricted room to the inside of Love’s A Fantasy. Lani Girl, which was closing the race off well, had to be checked when disappointed for running between It’s So Obvious and Reiby Rampart, both of which shifted ground slightly. Lani Girl was again checked shortly afterward when positioned behind Reiby Rampart and It’s So Obvious where there was insufficient room.
Wahng Wah – slow to begin. After the 150m altered course and was shifted across to the inside of Girl Sunday to obtain clear running.
Violent Snow – slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination revealed mare to be displaying a poor post-race recovery and showing signs of thumps. Trainer Mr J Warren was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the mare racing again.
Nahema – raced wide without cover throughout. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
Queen Misty – near the 150m, after being bumped by Long Time Ago, became unbalanced when hampered by that runner, which shifted out. Queen Misty was then steadied approaching the winning post when tightened for room between Long Time Ago (App. N Heywood) and Elouera, both of which shifted ground. App. N Heywood was advised to exercise more care.
Girl Sunday – approaching the winning post was steadied to avoid the heels of Philosophy, which shifted in when not clear.
It’s So Obvious – when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, App. R King stated, in an endeavour to take up a position closer to the running rail, she was obliged from her wide barrier to press forward, resulting in her mount taking up a position outside the leader Reiby Rampart. She said however her mount would not settle, raced very keenly and she attributed this to the mare weakening in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
