Golden boy - Hugh Bowman rides Gold Seventy Seven to an easy win
Gold Seventy Seven was sent out a dominant favourite by the punters early on the card and he asserted his authority over the rest of the field in the Cellarbrations Handicap over 1400 metres. Bigger things are definitely in store for the three-year-old son of Choisir and an Autumn programme is likely. The Lees stable confirmed he will now have a freshen up in the paddock before retuning to the track.
It wasn't all plain sailing though. Hugh Bowman couldn't find an early spot and was left with the decision to either work forward to the front or stay in his rhythm out three-wide. He chose the latter and the extra distance travelled made no difference in the end.
As a type he is hard to fault. The combination of a well-balanced frame with strength and athleticism and a fierce determination to win is proving to be much too potent for the off-season competition.
His added feature is that he seems to have an adaptable style, able to either take up the running or chase down gallopers at the end.
There is no doubt there will be chinks in this armour as the bar is raised. But for now we can enjoy the big future he might have in store.
