Happy winner - Winona Costin after getting the cash on Mardi

Two tough chicks! It's probably not the kindest way to refer to the Lady of Racing Gai Waterhouse and young jockey Winona Costin, but their efforts at Rosehill show that you can never keep these two down.

Gai saddled up eight runners, getting two winners, two narrow defeats and one dismal failure in Greatwood (..well it can't all be good!).

Winona booted home one of those winners, cuddling Mardi right to the turn before surging clear for a strong win.

Ride 'em Cowgirl

Young Winona showed her skill getting the win, but it was her cat-like reactions on veteran Earnest Ernest that was the finest horsemanship of the day. The owner of the famous non-winner requested the services of Winona a few starts ago and she has taken the ride ever since.

You can bet she wishes she missed that call.

Every time the young jockey gets on in the mounting yard, ol' Earnest kicks up a fuss. Usually they scramble him onto the track, but not this time. After a who lot of fuss and a few big kicks, Earnest rammed the gate sending Winona flying.

Panic and danger? Nope! Winona popped straight up on her feet and out of harms way. Impressive stuff...

Dodging Earnest - Winona was quick to get out of the towering sprinter's way

Not Jo's Day

The Jo Pride stable doesn't mind a bet and the bookies show a lot of respect when the money comes. There was a bit of money for Adorabeel, who couldn't run down Mardi, but the betting plunge that really stung came two races later.

The towering Mr Bogart was smashed into $4.20 and could only muster fourth to Sarajevo.

Add in $3 favourite Alias finishing seventh in the last and Earnest Ernest's antics (he had to be scratched) and you get a pretty frustrating day at the office.

Back to the drawing board - Jo Pride had a frustrating day at Rosehill

Smart Money Down South

A four-year-old mare with only one win from 15 starts isn't the usual target for a betting plunge.

If you have been following the red-hot Freedman stable, who are punching home winners at an amazing 40% strike rate, you might not have been surprised at the avalanche of cash that came for Inishowen at Flemington.

The odds halved on the day and she jumped as the $5 joint second-favourite.

It was smart money alright. Win number two was never in doubt, winning untouched on the line.

On fire - The Freedman stable is on a hot run of form

Sluggish Colts

Vancouver got a lot of attention after winning the Canonbury Stakes, you've got to question the move to Slipper favourite though. He had a bit of the Sarajevo about him, struggling to get into the contest early before surging late.

That's not the normal profile of a Waterhouse Golden Slipper winner. He just might be 'unders' now.

A bit sluggish? - Vancouver couldn't muster early speed on Saturday
