After being initially cleared by the stable veterinarian, upon arrival on course the mare was found to be lame in the off-foreleg and was subsequently a late withdrawal at 11.04am. Trainer representative Mr C Duckworth was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to In Times Of War racing again.

T Clark was advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground. When questioned, rider J Ford stated, whilst he anticipated taking up a handy position, he was instructed to endeavour to find cover and also not to ride his mount along in the early stages, as the gelding can have a tendency to overrace. He said, after beginning reasonably well, Chalk blundered soon after the start and as a consequence lost some ground. He added that soon after he endeavoured to encourage his mount to go forward, but when it did not respond to his brief urgings, he elected to come back in an attempt to find cover. J Ford further stated, as he endeavoured to find cover, Dissolute improved to his inside and as a consequence he was obliged to race wide and without cover for the majority of the event. He agreed with Stewards that in hindsight he should have made more effort to restrain his mount to endeavour to find cover on the back of Dissolute rather than racing exposed without cover. J Ford further added that in his opinion Chalk never travelled comfortably at any stage of the event and came under pressure from the 600m and accordingly he did not test his mount fully in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. The post-race condition and plans for Chalk will be followed up with trainer Ms W Roche.

At a subsequent inquiry M Walker pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) in that he used the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m (4 more than permitted). At a subsequent inquiry M Walker was fined the sum of $1000 under AR137A(5)(a)(ii)). Shifted back in behind runners shortly after the start. When questioned regarding his riding, B Avdulla stated in the early stages he was able to take up a position one off the fence behind Irukandji. He said when Outrageous began to race keenly he had to steady away from the heels of Irukandji, shifted in and as a result was obliged to race on the rail. He added that making the home turn he was initially following Guerrier and, when that runner did not improve as he would have liked, he shifted off with an intention to improve to that runner's outside. B Avdulla further stated that soon after straightening Guerrier shifted out, which resulted in Outrageous having to be steadied when disappointed for clear running and awkwardly placed close to the heels of Seberate. He said Outrageous was then held up for some distance on the back of Seberate, before shifting to the inside of runners near the 200m, where Outrageous secured clear running. He added in the early part of the straight he then improved into a narrow run between Long Leaf and Irukandji, before obtaining clear running at the 200m.
